When Deirdre Cole and her husband went out of town in April they left their two little dogs, Fern and Fawn, in the care of a trusted pet sitter.

Susan Truscott, the pet sitter who told Cole that Fawn was dead, hasn't explained how or why Fawn ended up at the county shelter — but Cole made her feelings clear in a scathing Yelp review.

Best Friends Critter Sitter has not yet responded to The Dodo's request for comment.

Here is her yelp review here:

We used Ms Truscott to care for our dogs for a number of years without incident. This last time however she betrayed our trust so completely that i would give NEGATIVE stars if i could.

We left our two dogs with her when we went out of town for a week in mid-April. When we returned we phoned her to say we were back and would like her to bring the dogs home, and to please call. She did not phone. The next morning she knocked on the door with one of our dogs (Fern). Susan said that Fawn had "died peacefully in her sleep" while we were gone. Susan said she found her "cold little body in the doggie bed". She said she cried. She said (and her boyfriend elaborated) that they buried her in a little coffin in their pet cemetery. She hugged me. I asked how Fern had taken the loss of Fawn. She said Fern had been fine, playing with a poodle puppy they had, and were looking to sell. (hint hint?) Discussion of the poodle puppy came up twice more in the conversation.

That was April 22. On May 1, Fawn was picked up in Algood (about 15 miles away) with terrible injuries which needed surgery. Fawn then spent the next week or so in the animal shelter. I was not looking for my lost dog, since i'd been told she was dead. I happened to look at the shelter web page and saw Fawn's picture staring at me. We went and rescued her from the shelter.

WHO LOSES (or worse) a tiny dog and then LIES that she died instead of telling the truth?

DO NOT ENTRUST YOUR BELOVED FUR BABIES to this sitter.

Wow!! That is a frightening story! Who would ever expect such a thing? Mind you, I was confused at the part that said the sitter "buried her in a little coffin in their pet cemetery." Um ... a) who has a pet cemetery handy unless they've had quite a few animals pass? [This sitter doesn't sound old enough to have had that many pets of her own, yet.] b) what kind of a sitter wouldn't call to inform the clients either as soon as it happened, or, at the very least, the moment they returned? c) why would the sitters even think they have a right to bury someone else's pet? Everyone has their own routines or rituals regarding a member of their family. I would be offended beyond belief if someone took the liberty to inter my pet! This also illuminates, again, the importance of micro-chipping pets. That way there is no chance of the shelters not knowing where the 'furry-friend' belongs! Thanks for sharing.

Only goes to show you that you cannot be careful enough who you choose to look after your animals when you go away for a while! The sitter probably made up a convenient story!

Thanks Scooby

Geez, a horrible story to say the least. I would have done her in and buried her in my garden, the rubbish bitch. I must admit, I will never ever leave my animals with anyone other than my sister or son.

What a travesty. But I'm finding out more and more how many people simply are gutless and resort to either stealing and/or lying as a way of life nowadays. This person needs to be sued up the wazoo!!!
