Who's this who takes decisions about life or death of a creature? And who gave him this authority? By this authority I can take my own decisions about others human's life or death. If we have the right to decide about the death of other kinds of life on this planet then why not having the right to do same on our own kind? I become really sick when I have to confront situations like this one. NO ONE has the right to deprive the life of a creature as is this puppy if not is accepting the same right to someone else to deprive her/his life. They are NOT animals, they are creatures of this blue planet by the same way that we humans are. Enough is enough.

All I can do is pray.... what is wrong in this world ?!? People claim to value love over most everything then they destroy the very creatures who will give it to us without question.

The sadness and the wonder is seen in his eyes. I hope that someone in Florida adopts this dog. He looks so precious! You can tell that he wuould make someone a good companion. I got my dog Mickey from a shelter and he was an older dog. He was the best dog in the whole world. I have two other dogs but tho I love them dearly, they don't come close to Mickeys' love and comfort that he gave us.

Obi A1317320 scared? Yes, of course - but also very, VERY wary, you can see - so you can bet your boots he's had an "experience or two" of treatment by so-called 'humans'! This situation is the very reason I support every spay & neuter programme; there are people who WANT (the forever crap flippin human craving!) pets but haven't got the foggiest clue about how to look after them, never mind giving the slightest thought to CARING for them!!! And this is also the very reason I won't EVER take any animal into a shelter unless absolutely necessary/critical - that action starts ticking a time bomb to extinguish their lives, irrespective of whether it's due to limited funds/space/whatever! I pray someone will be able to rescue in time please!!

This wouldn't be happening if it weren't for people. Always people, people, people. So damned irresponsible when it comes to dogs and cats and others--and where do they end up? In shelters like this one, or thrown out on the road. Animals suffer so much at the hands of people that I don't know how God stands it.

Poor sweet baby, reached out his paw. I couldn't do that job, just couldn't, put these animals down. Look at his pleading eyes. I wish I lived in a place to take him, I'd drive down there and get him but I can't take another animal as the rental only allows two and I have two. Plus his breed also wouldn't be allowed. I pray he'll have a home.

The phone number is 305-884-1101. It was incorrect above where it said "384" Please keep calling. I am calling the second number 305-884-1102 which gives you administrative offices. At extention 228 you can leave a message which I did pleading for them to not put this beautiful dog down. I pray that have not yet today, as perhaps they got calls from others. I will attempt to find the Shepherd rescues in that area who might help. I am in New Mexico so cannot do much from here but to telephone them. I did offer to pay his daily rent until he leaves the shelter. Not sure they will allow that but anything is worth a try.

"No time limit is placed on dogs eligible for adoption. In a case where the dog is not eligible for adoption and no rescue group takes it, it would be euthanized soon after the 5 days. Animals may be euthanized because of ill health, temperament or lack of space." It seems they have some flexibility in their euthanasia policy.
I called two German Shepherd groups in Florida, one is a training K-9 center, not always the best choice, but they may know someone who will rescue. I gave them my phone number and offered to pay for boarding costs for the dog at the shelter until picked up and to help in transportation costs if needed.
Guess we will not know until Monday what has happened to Obi.

Sinikka D. That was a most interesting article you referenced for us. The comments after the article were informative as well. Seems they have a huge problem at MiamiDade Animal Control They put down 40-50 dogs a day, and have a poor adoption record, and poor conditions for the animals, not even showing all the adoptable animals. The head vet gets paid a huge salary, in my opinion, but seems she has made little change. Also the Mayor Alvarez is connected perhaps to crime in the city government. Seems a huge city like Miami would have plenty of money to have an outstanding No Kill facility.
Maybe we need to help turn up the heat there by signing petitions for them to adopt a No Kill facility. I am so proud of what Albuquerque has done in having no kill philosophy. They have had big problems but seems this new Director is doing a great job here. Maybe I can call her to contact the director in Miami Dade and offer her assistance. I am brain storming again. We may need to get to be creative.
Thank you Sinikka for both your great referenced links. Will leave message for Mayor at his web site too.

Just found this on the web site of the Mayor, which does not co-oincide with the comments on the second link where there are serious problems. ??
This is at the link give by Sinnika D. above:

"County Works to Save More Pets

In partnership to save animals are (L-R): Cat Network Executive Director Charlen Grall, Humane Society Executive Director Emily Marquez, ASPCA CEO and President Ed Sayrez, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez, Animal Services Director Sara Pizano and County Manager George M. Burgess.Miami-Dade County is now one of only 10 communities nationwide to become an official ASPCA ® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) partner. Since 2007, the ASPCA has been lending its support, financially and through training and other resources, to communities around the country with the goal of helping them save more animals.

The article says that they adopted a larger number of animals, but does not say that the number of animals put down went up exponentially as well. Please write the Mayor and ask him to develop a No Kill facility. He is not in a poor neighborhood. There has to be money or people who will help raise it to build a large and humane building. I am now more worried about Obi because they do not hesitate to put dogs down.

Thank you, Aliso.
Along with all of you, I, too, pray that some great home finds this boy before it's too late.

The mass killing of companion animals in North America, as well as other places, of truly a holocaust. if it isn't curbed drastically, and soon, it will corrode our social structure - out very ethics - beyond the point of no return. Ultimately, we will reap what we sow. Absolutely.

I've send yesterday an e-letter to Mrs Sara Pizano who's the director of this shelter for homeless creatures, and for doing this I used my personal phone number and internet address, which are provided to me by the official national provider here in Greece. I've said that I'm willing to collaborate for finding a solution, that I want to adopt this puppy and that I'm wiiling to follow any required procedure for this term. I've send informations to friends of mine at USA about this case as to push them for been interested about this case but, Mrs Sara Pizaro does not have the will to communicate with any person out of the her shelter. She just put down the phones and all the other ways to communicate with her. I can't know right now what's going on with the case of this puppy. Please take in consideration that I'm living very faraway of NM. In my country I can always find a solution to problems like this one because it's very close to me.

Puppy Mills should be banned as also should puppy farms in the UK. They lead to the same horrible problems. If there is such an overpopulation of dogs that they are constantly being killed in shelters overbreeding combined with irresponsible owners is the cause.
I do not understand why people still go to puppy mills and puppy farms. If they really love dogs they should be happy to give a home to a shelter animal.

WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! This is enough! We are here to make a difference for animals that have no voice yet we are given 24 hours before a life is taken from a Healthy Friendly young dog! This killing MUST STOP! Soon our human live will be at this same level if we let this continue! A life is a life regardless of what species. No one but God has the right to take a life! This is murder pure & simple! All animals have a right like we do to live their life as God intended them too! If this does not stop for the animals it will not stop for all of us! I am a dog. I am a living, breathing animal. I feel pain, joy, love, fear and pleasure.

I am not a thing. If I am hit - I will bruise, I will bleed, I will break. I will feel pain. I am not a thing.

I am a dog. I enjoy playtime, walk time, but more than anything, I enjoy time with my pack - my family - my people. I want nothing more than to be by the side of my human. I want to sleep where you sleep and walk where you walk. I am a dog and I feel love...I crave companionship.

I enjoy the touch of a kind hand and the softness of a good bed. I want to be inside of the home with my family, not stuck on the end of a chain or alone in a kennel or fenced yard for hours on end. I was born to be a companion, not to live a life of solitude.

I get too cold and I get too hot. I experience hunger and thirst. I am a living creature, not a thing.

When you leave, I want to go with you. If I stay behind, I will eagerly await your return. I long for the sound of your voice. I will do most anything to please you. I live to be your treasured companion.

I am a dog. My actions are not dictated by money, greed, or hatred. I do not know prejudice. I live in the moment and am ruled by love and loyalty.

Do not mistake me for a mindless object. I can feel and I can think. I can experience more than physical pain, I can feel fear and joy. I can feel love and confusion. I have emotions. I understand perhaps more than you do. I am able to comprehend the words you speak to me, but you are not always able to understand me.

I am a dog. I am not able to care for myself without your help. If you choose to tie me up and refuse to feed me, I will starve. If you abandon me on a rural road, I will experience fear and loneliness. I will search for you and wonder why I have been left behind. I am not a piece of property to be dumped and forgotten.

If you choose to leave me at a shelter, I will be frightened and bewildered. I will watch for your return with every footfall that approaches my kennel run.

I am a dog - a living, breathing creature. If you choose to take me home, please provide me with the things that I need to keep me healthy and happy.

Provide me with good food, clean water, warm shelter and your love. Do not abandon me. Do not kick me. Do not dump me when your life gets too busy. Make a commitment to me for the entirety of my life, or do not take me home in the first place.

If you desert me, I do not have the means to care for myself. I am at the mercy of the kindness of people - if I fall into the wrong hands, my life will be ruined.

I will experience pain, fear and loneliness. If I wind up in an animal shelter, I have only my eyes to implore someone to save me, and my tail to show you that I am a friend. If that is not good enough, I will die.

I am a dog. I want to give and receive love. I want to live. I am not a thing. I am not a piece of property. Please do not discard me. Please treat me with kindness, love and respect. I promise to repay you with unconditional love for as long as I live.

I can add no more to what has been said; we all feel sadness and compassion for this and all creatures who suffer at the hands of humans. As a race, most humans are pretty darned lacking in the qualilties we share as Care2 members. The vet tech had some heart though, pity he can't take this poor dog, Obi.

How could we know for sure he was adopted? Please,if there is someone near this place, visit the shelter. There have to be some adoption papers .Organizations sponsoring this shelter may have the right to know if this is true and see adoption papers.Being this a state shelter, papers should be asequible for anyone no? We need to know if this is true. They could be lying to calm the people.
I don't know how to do it.but i think we should open a petition to make FLORIDA (and rest of states)a non kill state . and one for "today":to have proof of this adoption.Aren't these places maintain with the money of tax payers and donnors? If this is true,we have the right to know for sure. Please, someone with the "know how" and good info,OPEN A PETITION!

I've been working at an animal shelter for nearly 6 years now...No, not a municipal shelter...a non-profit...We do what we can to save animals within the shelter "system", taking animals that have been scheduled for euthanasia elsewhere...Giving animals that have been waiting for a home for sometimes a year at one shelter a second chance with us...but there are times that even we can't save them...It is always so painful when an animal's life is ended...I always wonder if more could have been done...It is so hard not to become so attached to those who have been abandoned...abused to the point of complete mistrust of all people...but I want to say this...Please don't be so quick to condemn the shelter...Ultimately, it is society, itself, that has failed these animals...We have adopted a "throw-away" mentality when it comes to animals...but I stay in the animal welfare field for endings such as this. So glad that Obi has found a (hopefully) forever home...

Thank you, Aliso.

Why must an animal always die? Surely there is someone who is both willing and able to take care of this beautiful dog, if it's not too late ... I do not understand why people are so quick to kill an animal. The animals need our help and we get so much back from these wonderful, selfless creatures.

I hope you are all right but this is not a good shelter and kills 50 a day, and is poorly organized per the article in the paper, so we hope to confirm tomorrow that they are not just saying so. If they put him down his name would not be on the list available. I do not like what I read about them in the article that was posted earlier by Sinikka:
Read this article and the comments following and decide if you trust these people. I do not. They have had very bad history and have dogs in rooms that are not even shown that are adoptable and then they put them down. This shelter is poorly managed and the Mayor has come under great criticism about it. We need to try to get petitions to get them to agree to developing a decent and sufficient No Kill facility. Miami is not a poor city, and they can well afford to do so. The Mayor has a bad reputation and involvement with money funnies.

I am sick of innocent creatures being sentenced to death for the crime of being unwanted. If humans were responsible about spaying and neutering this would no longer be a problem. I'd love to see a Federally funded spay/neuter program so that all strays could be rounded up and neutered for free. But unfortunately, I can already imagine Conservatives lining up to block it.

I heard from a K-9 training unit that is going to call about Obi, and I warned them about trusting their information.
They manipulate information, as I reported in earlier message if you read the link that has been posted by me and another person. We need to try to convince them they should have a No Kill Shelter. Another agency I emailed about Obi said that most all the rescues are full and that there is an overabundance of dogs. Perhaps the economy is forcing people to give them up. Wonder what is happening and if anyone is studying it. I remember someone on Care2 talking about getting more help for the poor to be able to keep their animals by helping to feed them. That would be tragic and I am sure it has happened.

MIAMI DADE ANIMAL SHELTER is one of the worst in the United States. Thousands of dogs and cats are subjected to sweltering heat, freezing cold, lack of food, comfort, bedding and denied most basic needs.
The killing rate for MDAS is upwards of 70% of all healthy and adoptable animals who come through their doors. 40 animals a day, 420 a week ARE BEING MURDERED P...AID FOR BY OUR TAX DOLLARS!!!!
Their system is archaic and rife with confusion. When someone wants to adopt or save an animal, they are made to wait for hours. Adopters are denied animals for trivial and technical reasons which costs the animal its life. On more than one occasion an animal has been killed by "accident" because of incompetent and careless staff.
Many rescuers refuse to work with MDAS because of poor treatment and impossible time restraints. Most animals coming out of MDAS are sick and as a result, rescuers and adopters are having to pay expenses for illness which could otherwise be prevented.
We will need at least 200 protesters confirmed or this will not happen.

When the shelters say "Adopted" I think it is likely to be true. When the reality is that the animal has been killed, they use the phrase "No longer listed" or "No longer at the shelter" and they are coy if you ask if the animal was actually adopted.
So glad Obi found a home... but there are thousands more, and thousands of cats. The Animal Care and Control of NYC puts loads of pets to sleep -- ie kills them-- every single day. Some are only babies.

Tuesday January 18, 2011, 3:00 pm
Talked with Lorna Meija, Assistant to the Veterinarian who said a couple adopted Obi, but she still used the words that "she thought that Obi was adopted - -" .So who knows. She said their facility is three times too small most of the time and other times much more too small. She said they cut taxes to the people in the county so they have less money to work with. I told her there was going to be a demonstration sometime and that they could use this in a positive way in getting word to the public that they are critically undersized, and perhaps some fund raising could be done if they cannot allocate money from their budget, that it is more important than paving a bunch of parking lots, meaning they need to look at their priorities in the Mayors office.
I did not say when and wanted to give a idea that this could be positive in that it will demonstrated they are doing the best they can with what is far too small. She said they adopt about 40 dogs a day, better than earlier, but I mentioned the article I read said they put down more dogs too. She said the people in their area just drop off dogs for no reason, cause they want to get another one. Seems some public relations and public education and sensitivity training needs to be done in Miami. Are they a bunch of selfish freaks who only want a new toy and immediate gratification and see a dog as a non-feeling object?? How do we get the word out that people in Dade County and MIami are selfish uncaring aliens. There are a lot of immigrants there from Cuba, Puerto Rico, etc. who may not have developed sensitivity. Well hope someone gets my drift and can come up with ideas. Maybe a few letters to the editor in their largest newspaper might help after the demonstration happens. Whatever we can do to get the heat to get a decent facility and fix this problems. Where are the puppy mills in Florida? Is it the taxes they want from the Puppy Mills and therefore don't want to close them? There are too many dogs in Florida.

Judith... just wanted to get some facts to you about Miami-Dade area....

Your made a remark saying " How do we get the word out that people in Dade County and MIami are selfish uncaring aliens. There are a lot of immigrants there from Cuba, Puerto Rico, etc. who may not have developed sensitivity" THIS CANNOT BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH !!!! And it is an inflammatory remark that is designed to hurt people.

Miami-Dade is an area that is very hard hit by the housing crunch and people are losing their houses by the droves. I know... we have a house in that area and are in danger of losing it. So we have currently moved to Mississippi. But I can tell you that the remark from the woman at the shelter that you took to be truth is far from accurate. People give up their pets after a long hard struggle and the loss of a job and a house. These aren't some selfish pampered people who drop off an animal just to go get a new one. I've know people who missed meals on a regular basis just to feed their pets. And I DO know... I lived right in that area for more than 25 years! Some of the greatest animal lovers are Cubans or from South America. Many of them have extended families that are willing to take in and love a relative's dog or cat when that person loses a home and has to move into a crowed apartment with others. In this case I have first hand knowledge of this happening... and am not relying on a racist remark made by a someone in a shelter who just wants to get you off their back.

So. please... in the future do not make remarks designed to be unkind... check out the facts because, like in this case, they do not support your theory and won't help us save animals or encourage humans to join in to make life better for the innocent.

I think it really unfair why.. people need to euthanasia innocen healty dogs..because people can't adopt them!! It wil take time to bring their pets back from shelter or there are people out there who is willing to help them!! It all matters with time!! Killing healthy dogs because they don't have really not the way to solve problem!! People need to more heart for animals and think what is the best way to help them!!
Every day ....alot of dogs get euthanasia for no reason!! THIS IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST ISSUE EVERY ONE NEED TO STOP THIS!! REALLY NEED TO STOP!!

For Jeanette and anyone else that I offended:
"I am sorry my comment offended you. I was actually repeating what I was told by the woman at the shelter, that people just drop off animals for no reason, because they want a different one she said. Then when I added that there were several immigrants in the area you associated it with the earlier remark, or maybe I said it poorly.

I did not mean to slam people of other cultures, but have felt that they have been so destitute in their old countries often that animal rights and needs were often secondary. Not to be mean but as a means to live and survive themselves.

I apologize and will consider my thoughts more carefully. and will post this on the comments. It was not very thoughtful of me to write it that way, and perhaps I was just making statements carelessly and cruely. It is not me to do that but after one reads of so much pain it gets transferred in our words. My deepest apologies for my thoughlessness."

Thank you everyone for your help! Thanks to you Obi's life was saved.Such a precious and loving boy was about to be put to death. His only crime was that noone wanted him. I hope someday soon we will be a no kill nation!Puppy mills and breeders only help more animals die every year in shelters.I hope we can stop the killing so no animal has to experience suffering and being put to death because they do not have a home.
