The average suburban family can grow all the animal protein it needs by stocking small African fish in the backyard.

Great site. Trying to be vegan, so it's not for me ... but what I really like about it is that it forces me to face killing the food myself instead of hiding behind someone else doing it for me.

Of course, that can lead to desensitization as well ... it has to be an ethical commitment.

It's easy to eat meat (animals) when it's handed to you as an end result. When you are responsible for handling the animal and ending it's life for your own consumption, it makes you take life and food a lot more seriously.

Same for gardening actually. When I grow vegetables, waste becomes out of the question! It all makes you realize how disrespected food is sometimes...

I would rather do this if I had the land than raise chickens and yes as others have commented, when we raise/grow food ourselves we tend to waste less because we appreciate what effort we've put into it.
