WASHINGTON -- When 7-year-old Winter Slade decided that she didn't want presents for her birthday, but instead wanted people to give money to a charity to help protect endangered animals, her mom couldn't have been more proud.

She is an awesome little girl and she is lucky to have a mom like that! I was not surprised when I read that adults said next to her that her idea was stupid, screw these wortless pieces of crap! I would love to donate to her cause but I can't right now!

What a wonderful little girl. She did the right thing, by wanting to raise money for endangered animals. Most kids would never do something like this. And as for the parents that said that she was stupid, THINK AGAIN. The parents are the stupid ones. This little girl has a very big heart. God Bless you for being so caring, keep up the good work and don't let ANYBODY tell you that you can't do something!!!!

I am so impressed I donated to Winter's cause. A wildlife warrior - love her! I hope her project receives alot of donations, not only for wildlife, but so she can flash a big freaking smile to all those who thought her idea was stupid.

The parents who said that Winter was stupid are stupid themselves. They don't even know what is the good thing or how to be a good person.

Ah, if having a generous heart and caring about someone and something beyond yourself makes one stupid, then I wish everyone were as "stupid" as Winter and her mom! Sure beats being cruelly ignorant like her friend's parent. Like Constance, I was inspired by Winter and her story to make a donation as well. I hope she raises gobs of money for the pine marten, that her mom fully recovers from her cancer, and come November she has the happiest birthday ever, knowing she did a generous and wonderful thing.

Dear Laloofah,
Thank you for your generous donation to Earth Rangers' Bring Back the Wild program. Due to your generosity, Earth Rangers is able to empower children to protect animals and their habitats across Canada.

It's shocking that some parents thought nothing of saying in front of Winter and other children that the project was stupid. How heartless can you be? Were they just jealous because their own child didn't have the idea first? I hope they are by now thoroughly ashamed.
It's wonderful that at age 7 Winter is already aware of how important it is to save our planet and preserve Nature. She restores our faith in humanity and if all children were like her we would no longer fear for the future of our Earth.

Wonderful story! It is the compassionate children of today who are going to make the world a better place for all living creatures. So glad her dream wasn't crushed by the small mindedness of those parents who should be ashamed of their insensitivity. Thanks to her mother, an inspiring woman who in the midst of her own battle with cancer has supported and encouraged her daughter not to give up on her dreams - this story has touched me on many levels.
