Prime Minister Cameron says there are "strong indications" killing near army training barracks was terror-related.

One person has been killed and two attackers shot by police near a military training barracks in London, officials say.

Witnesses said the victim was hacked to death with a machete-style knife in the Woolwich district in the southeast of the British capital on Wednesday.

Video footage filmed by an onlooker and broadcast by Britain's ITV news channel showed a man with hands covered in blood and holding a bloodied meat cleaver and a knife.

"I apologise that women had to witness this today but in our lands, our women have to see the same," he said. "You people will never be safe. Remove your government, they don't care about you."

Media reports said the victim was a serving British soldier.

"It is the most appalling crime," Prime Minister David Cameron said, before cutting short a visit to Paris.

"The police are urgently seeking the full facts about this case but there are strong indications that it is a terrorist incident."

Home Secretary Theresa May chaired a meeting with the government's emergency COBRA security committee on Wednesday night in response to the attack.

She said two men were shot by armed police and were receiving treatment for their injuries.

Anti-Muslim sentiment

Witnesses said the victim was wearing a T-shirt of military charity Help for Heroes, which assists wounded British veterans.

He was reportedly first hit by a car before the two men in that vehicle came out with a machete and a gun and started to attack to man.

Witnesses said the attackers had fearlessly approached police when they arrived and were then shot.

Al Jazeera's Laurence Lee, reporting from London, said people on social media platforms were expressing anti-Muslim sentiment after the incident as the men were said to have shouted "Allahu Akbar" as they attacked the man.

"It's the kind of incident that lends itself very much to rumour and speculation," he said. "People who have a pre-set agenda will be making the absolute best of it if they think it can further their cause."

The far-right English Defence League called on supporters to mobilise.

Britain's Ministry of Defence said it was urgently investigating reports that a serving soldier was involved in the incident.

Security was tightened in the area and at all London barracks after the incident.

The Muslim Council of Britain condemned the attack, saying: "This is a truly barbaric act that has no basis in Islam and we condemn this unreservedly."

'Lone wolves'
In July 2005, four suicide bombers attacked London's public transport network, killing 52 people and wounding hundreds. A similar attempted attack two weeks later was thwarted.

British counter-terrorism chiefs have recently warned that radicalised individuals, so-called lone wolves who might have had no direct contact with al-Qaeda posed as great a risk as those who plotted attacks on the lines of the 2005 attacks.

Shiraz Maher of the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation at Kings College, told Al Jazeera that British security services have become very good at foiling large-scale conspiracies.

He said al-Qaeda has now told Muslims in the West who are sympathetic to their cause to instead launch small-scale attacks, without talking to others, "maybe do it alone, or with another friend; get a knife, get a machete.

"As you see in those kind of attacks, it doesn't take much to cause widespread panic and fear, so they are almost impossible for police to guard against," he said.

Britain's involvement in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq in the past decade has occasionally made soldiers a target at home. British police have foiled at least two major plots in which suspects were accused of planning to kill off-duty troops.

Ahmed Jama, a 26-year-old resident in Woolwich, laid flowers down at the scene as a sign of respect to the families involved.

"This has nothing to do with Islam, this has nothing to do with our religion. This has nothing to do with Allah," he said. It's heartbreaking, it's heartbreaking."

Several media have reported this, at Reuters you can read more of the words shouted by the attacker:

"We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you. The only reason we have done this is because Muslims are dying every day," the black man in his 20s or 30s, wearing a wool jacket and jeans and speaking with a local accent, shouted in the footage obtained by Britain's ITV news channel.

"This British soldier is an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth."

Because of his utter lack of leadership, to the point where a British soldier was butchered, if he was the President, Obama would have to be forced to resign.

I'm sorry, I just can't let the site of this man out of my conscience. Why was the media there to film him instead of the police arresting him?
What is it going to take for England to wake up?

Allan, the videos were shot by bystanders on demand of the attacker. Why it took police 20 mins to get there(as reported) is still being investigated.

Police must be getting their directions from Haliburton.,,, Such a sad, sad, story. When will man be able to see past the color of skin, or what they perceive to a persons religious belief or lack thereof just by looking at them.

I don't know why but it really bothers me that they are calling this an incident. It was not an incident, it was a bloody and horrific murder! A man was purposely hit by a car and then hacked to death with a machete. That is not an "incident". This is really disturbing. Thanks Angie.

I t is absolutely disturbing and by now all media are speaking of a terrorist attack. Such single attacks are easier to carry out than those affecting many people and thus tend to get more attention as intended by terrorists. This brutal murder is shocking to the bone!

Oh this is just heart breaking. It should never have taken the police that long to get to the scene! What is going on over there anyway? It sounds very dagerous in the U.K. Poor young man & his family, my heart goes out to them!
Thanks Angie.

Angelika, good to see you posting an article about Islamist killings. Thank you.

If you can see a crime in this murder, I hope you will see a crime in murders committed in Israel by the guys with the same political views.

Bob, I oppose ANY and EVERY kind of terror and can certainly recognise when I see it. This one is definitely an outstanding act of violent terror but yet I would not compare it to crimes of a different level committed by an oppressed people against their oppressors. This murderer here has been living as a free man in the UK, was never tortured or oppressed by any Westerners or others and was simply acting out of ill religious fanatic hate motivation, a criminal, yes! Not at all comparable with Palestinians. This, though is NOT SAYING that I would excuse terror by hamas and their motivation for retaliating.
On a side note, I wonder what the reactions would be if we had a video showing Western soldiers doing the very same to innocent civilians in war zones like Afghanistan or Iraq. What we DID see (the helicopter incident put out by Manning and images of US troops parading with cut off body parts or urinating on their dead victims) are certainly not all isolated incidents and perhaps just the tip of an iceberg.

Let's just hope there won't be any following terror acts and I hope the Yard has a perfect security plan for Saturday's football champion league final game in London.
Drummer Rigby has also served in Afghanistan and I assume we will soon learn details if he was a random pick by the jihadists or a chosen target. RIP Mr Rigby.

He just seems insane, I'm unsure why everything is labeled as a terrorist attack and accepted as such and never question the person's sanity. Bob, Islamist killings? Do you go and look for anti-Islam stuff or what. It's a bit pathetic. I never see you commenting on any other petition, or any other killing, only if it's a muslim.

This attack was to provoke more violence, like the Glasgow attack it is a failure as the general population can only feel revulsion on the way how cowardly they are. To ram a man with a car and attack him with machetes and film it. The guy actually explained it to someone who filmed it, as this is what happens every day in their country ... no it doesn't. Still when they tried it in Glasgow someone had the right idea to kick the terrorist in the nuts.

Not only do these two murderers show the low level of their intelligence but also how cowardly they are, to run down a man with a car so he's no longer able to defend himself, before finishing him off with knives and machetes. I'm also speechless that bystanders filmed the scene but made no effort to stop the two murderers or help poor Lee. A concerted effort could have overpowered these men and saved Lee's life.
Then we learn that following this, other idiots attacked two mosques, how does that help? It's just provoking the Muslims who use these mosques to pray, most of whom are innocent law-abiding people.
RIP drummer Lee Rigby and I feel so sad for his little 2-year old son who'll grow up without his Dad.

if you read statements of these Jihasists, they also claim themselves to be the "oppressed people", because they associate themselves with Taliban more, than with regular British population.

This equally applies to same British Islamisits, blowing up Israeli discos or pizza shops. Or, Saudi-paid Islamists eating hearts of Syrian soldiers. They will tell you they must revenge for something that was done to somebody some time ago.

Daniel Pearl was beheaded, because his Pakistani Islamist killer was revenging the death of Mohammed Durah, not knowing, thanks to Arab propaganda, that Durah was killed by Arab gun fire.

You cannot limit the general trend to exclude those whom you don't like, if you want to be truthful with yourself.

@ Sam E. -while I share your views in the second part of your comment I would disagree with "low level of ..intelligence". Fundamentalism, religious extremism and fanatism is no matter of intelligence as the right-wing in Congress is best proof-unless you wish to declare them all idiots. Perhaps they are after all...

Noted. Despite all the focus on religion, this was murder by someone who's obviously mentally ill. After all, who, in their right mind would even consider doing something so violent? Enough of the "blame game."

Bad people will use any excuse to justify violence. One persons suffering never makes up for another person's pain. I'm sad and sorry about this horrible act, but also worried about the many kind, peaceful, law abiding Muslims (some of whom are beloved friends and horrified by violence) who will suffer because of it.

Bad people will use any excuse to justify violence. This is a horrifying attack and I feel sad and sick about it. I'm also worried about the many kind, peaceful, law abiding Muslims (some of whom are my dear friends and are shocked and horrified by violence) who will suffer for this. Suffering, pain, violence, war and injustice never are fixed by just passing them on to someone else.

Lois, I don't think he/the two are mentally ill, they are known to Scotland Yard as extreme Islamists and have been radicalized. Sadly, security forces failed to watch them although they were known having distributed Islamist flyers just recently.

Tragic. My sympathy to the family of the soldier. The two who murdered him are cowards and a disgrace to humanity and their faith. There is no excuse for what they have done. None. Hiding behind a religion is cowardly and pathetic.

There is comment now from "authorities" that they had no reason to suspect them for serious trouble. I put it to you that they had every reason to deport if not charge with seditious behavior and or treasonous intent... As in Benghazi..(Nazi?)... and Boston...." we had no reason to worry"... ....I guess not when half your capacity to reason is censored by willful idiocy (policy) or worse a conspiracy to commit a suicidal engagement.......The American GOV'T HAS SHACKLED ITS' AGENCIES IN JUST SUCH A DEASDLY MYOPIA FOR THE SAKE OF A LOVE AFFAIR WITH ISLAM WHICH IS most unfortunately going to create a progeny in the line of RoseMary... ..A Mary- age of nothing but the promise of a thorny misery .. even as the Truth is buried .. in denial...Consummated in Mordorian fantasy as opposed to the sobering actuality which will in the end be revealed in Christs' return.. be not deceived....It is left to the individual to receive the truth... now.. Do you have faith?...Have it to yourselves before God....No Prophet this Jesus... but the Lamb of God.

By all accounts, the man in this photo, Michael Adebolajo, " was the most laid-back, nicest guy in the world," according to one of his former friends. This was before radical Islamist leaders got their fangs into him and turned him into a cold-blooded killer.
These are the same people who persuade vulnerable young Muslims to become suicide bombers in countries like Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan etc.
These evil preachers are the ones the security services should be targeting and in the U.K. they have been particularly remiss in doing this. If this doesn't happen it's going to be a very violent summer there.

This story was previously posted at - probably from a different source but the same incident/murder. The comments included many that were virulently anti-Muslim. One comment included "What is wrong with these muslim nutters" (sic). May I repeat here what I said there?

"What is wrong with them? The exact same thing that is wrong with White Supremacists. One will not be solved without solving the other."

I hope not "...that citizens may find some creative way to deal with those monsters". Because if they would, they would be just as bad ! I trust we've got law and order, the mob must not "judge". Let's hope we keep it civilized;
even though it was an horrific act.
"Liebetreu" is Jewish, right ? That might explain the hate. I agree with J. Dixon :"What is wrong with them? The exact same thing that is wrong with White Supremacists. One will not be solved without solving the other." Again : Don't let the mob rule !!
