16 year-old Amina Filali, raped, beaten and forced to wed her rapist, killed herself -- the only way she saw to escape the trap set for her by her rapist and Moroccan law. We've joined Moroccan activists, campaigning for years to repeal this provision, >>

Article 475 in Morocco’s penal code allows a rapist to avoid prosecution and a long prison sentence by marrying his victim if she is a minor. It’s any rape survivor’s worst nightmare, and for Amina, it came true. But now, after hundreds of thousands of us helped to push Parliament, a vote to repeal the provision is within our grasp. If it’s called, insiders say the repeal is certain to pass. We just need one final push to get it to the table.

It seems I signed this some time ago, but it accepted my signature. (Sheesh . . . there's so much wrong in this world that it gets harder and harder to remember what I've signed!)

Thanks for promoting this last ditch effort, Angie!

Abdelaziz Nouaydi, who runs the Adala Assocation for legal reform, said a judge can recommend marriage only in the case of agreement by the victim and both families.

"It is not something that happens a great deal – it is very rare," he said, but admitted that the family of the victim sometimes agrees out of fear that she won't be able to find a husband if it is known she was raped.

The marriage is then pushed on the victim by the families to avoid scandal, said Fouzia Assouli, president of Democratic League for Women's Rights.

"It is unfortunately a recurring phenomenon," she said."We have been asking for years for the cancellation of Article 475 of the penal code which allows the rapist to escape justice."

********This is so sad, I remember this case and how she did not want to marry this man and said she'd die first and she obviously has done so. Signed with great sadness.

This is wrong but it comes out of the Judeo-Christian-Islamic tradition. But I must ask the question, "Is the American treatment of rape victims where by I believe it is 39+ US States give the rapist full legal access to paternal rights, as in those states the rapist, convicted or not, can sue for Full or Partial Custody and/or Visitation Rights concerning any child born out of rape any different of better?".

Angelika, one of the perks of having Jesuits as college professors and friends. For those who may wonder where I get this. Deuteronomy 22: 28-29 " If a man meets a virgin who is not betrothed, and seizes her and lies with her...then the man.. shall give the father... fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife... He may not divorce her all of his days.". And Exodus 22: 16-17 amounts to the same thing except that the father of the woman makes the decision and gets "the virgin bride price" regardless of whether or not a marriage occurs, but the choice is still not the woman's.

Signed and noted. It just shows what an uphill battle it is for women in half the world to be treated as an equal rather than a possession to be bought, sold or given away by her family! A very pernicious course of action which the parents no doubt regret, but it's no good regretting after your daughter is dead.I would have walked over hot coal for mine!We have a very long way to go!
