Youth sound the alarm for Merkel and Cameron to lead on EU climate targets

Young people from the UK Youth Climate Coalition ridiculed Merkel and Cameron for not listening to “science, extreme weather, and the voice of youth”. The campaigners called on Merkel and Cameron to choose to lead the way on ambitious greenhouse gas reduction target for the EU in their discussions on the issue today.

The action comes a day after many environmental groups staged a mass stunt in London highlighting the possible link between the recent stormy weather across England and Wales, and changes to the earth’s climate.

Flick Monk, from the UK Youth Climate Coalition, said “The EU must lead the way on climate change targets. Other countries see the EU as a leader in climate change policy. If we are to stay within 2 degrees of warming, we must have ambitious climate change targets from all negotiating blocs – especially the EU – in the run up to the Global Deal that will be negotiated in 2015.”

This action is part of a Europe-wide Week of Action calling on EU governments to increase their climate ambition, organised by Climate Action Network Europe.

Following a White Paper published by the European Commission in January which proposed a climate target of -40% based on 1990 levels, environmental groups across Europe have been lobbying their governments to toughen up the targets. The White Paper will be debated in the European Council in March, having already been criticised by the European Parliament for not containing ambitious enough targets.

I've signed the first one, for Cameron and Clegg. The second link didn't work for my country, so I signed for Merkel.

TY, Angie

Actually the Queen has been around a bit, and she is an extraordinarily knowledgeable woman - they might have learned something from her!

The Thing here is, the Queen has ZERO SAY in this, Lindsay! We KNOW she is knowledgeable, no question, and we also know more than that...

A huge well done to the Youth Group - not only for caring, but also for being willing to try to do something.
