Dick Sizemore is not the kind of guy you'd picture with a pet squirrel, but the Mesa del Caballo resident and wife Lois ended up with one anyway. It all started when Sizemore found the squirrel he named Junior under a birdfeeder in his backyard on

Reminds me of my little was a sad day to take him back to the Forest....
But all my buttons are now back on my shirts, where they belong too

That is sooooo lovely! This should be a lesson for those who are thinking about keeping exotic or even non-domestic native wildlife as pets, but things do happen.

Every time I feed peanuts to my yearly crop of new squirrels, and the couple of returning adults I'll always be thinking about the wonderful man and his wisdom. As much as you like the idea of having a "wild" animal around you, you ultimately must realize like Mr. Sizmore that the animal belongs in the wild.

If I ever figure out how to transfer my photos from my SD's card to my computer, I hope to be able to post one or 40 or 50, (no I wouldn't do that to everyone, but I do have at least that many squirrel photos on cards!).

There's a local animal rehaber that mainly deals with squirrels, so when I get my license next year I may start out with helping her. I doubt she names "her" squirrels like I do though!? LOL

Thanks again Raffi,

So good to read a "happy ending" story for a change. What a lovely man with the right attitude to wildlife.

More people need to understand that wild belongs in the wild--we live in houses but it is not their natural environment no matter how cushy. How wonderful to be loved by a squirrel.

i'm all for helping abandoned wild animals, especially those that are young and lost their mothers. i myself have done this in the past, but it's so important to let them go back to their natural habitat when it's safe for them to do so.
