A "nuclear state" is one in which uranium has been enriched at a level of 20% or so, for the purpose of producing electricity, but has not as yet enriched it sufficiently for nuclear weapons. This is what Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has announced to the world.

A "nuclear power", on the other hand, is a state already in possession of nuclear weapons, through enrichment of uranium at a level over 90%. As uranium enrichment is a complicated technical process that requires a great deal of expertise in nuclear physics, it will take Iran a long time to produce such weaponry. Another stumbling block is the fact that Iran is a signatory to the UN's Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which requires scheduled inspections of all Iranian nuclear facilities to ensure the uranium is enriched only to the levels for nuclear energy and not for weapons.

Thanks, Cal.

It appears at least low stockpiles were enriched and only to 20%. but, can you trust Iran, not to proceed any further on up to nuclear weaponry grade material.

Judging from their summer election fraud and aimless slinging of slurs towards the West...it really doesn't seem so...

It appears according to today's reports to put it in the vernacular Iran has trouble "getting it up" Of more immediate importance is Amnesty Internationial's petition to halt executions.

So! What's the big fuss? Israel is illegally Nuclear armed, and has been for decades, without being condemned by Americans, or Europeans. Oh! That's it. America just might think twice before invading Iran. Israel might get the bomb. (Sent from Iran.) Israel could even, now, think twice before using hers, could get a return present. Yeh!! well America and allies have been using this reasoning for decades too, that we only have the bomb as a deterrent we would never actually use it.

During WW2 Britain had many tons of GAS shells and bombs, they were never used, but only because the Germans didn't invade, and they thought the Germans also had them. Maybe, just maybe, a deterrent works. (Sometimes).. It also is only a deterrent if both sides fear the retaliatory outcome.

Iran doesn't want to be part of the world and is flexing it's muscle as a warning to other countries not to interfere with anything Iran does or wants. We don't know how far they will go or react to others. Anyone who feels the United States should condemn other countries for self defense and does not agree with our commitment to our allies such as Israel, please feel free to leave, the door is open.

I think it is time to let Israel do what it wants to, just don't leave any survivors.

There are too many kinds on the Internet that like war games. Should we hope they grow up? On the other hand maybe its better they don't grow up to inherit all that money yet.

noted, thanks.

Only the mightiest have the right to develop nukes and use them, too. The weak should lie down and close their eyes and should let themselves be slaughtered peacefully otherwise they will be declared terrorists.

Might is right.

Well, i am scared. Somehow these people (our enemies) are really at war with us and it is confusing what did we do?? We couldn't have done anything to these extremists to incur their wrath could we have?? What could it be cause we shouldn't have done something and i am puzzled. America the savior of the world is attacked for what? Yes might is right and America was the main strong power...now we have competion and fear. Of course many have lived under the threat of nukes from ALL sources. Soon we shall feel the wrath and the cat is out of the bag. Hope there is lots of virgins for all these martyr/pedophiles. Oh the glory in the deflowering a virgin is good but 15 or so that is THE ULITAMTE we have prisons full of people with that thought pattern:)

These are not the policies of the Iranian people. Don't confuse them with their tirant president and radical followers.

I find it amusing that people in the most powerful nation on Earth, which has almost as much military spending as the rest of the world combined, is scared of a little country that spends a tiny fraction on its military in comparison. The USA has invaded Iran's neighbours (Afghanistan and Iraq), and has surrounded Iran and on top of that, the USA has thousands of nuclear weapons, while Iran has none.

That fear is even more ridiculous when we remember that Iran has not attacked any other countries since the Islamic revolution in 1979, while the USA has attacked more than 50 countries since the end of WW2, and made a proxy war by against Iran by getting Saddam Hussein's regime in Iraq to invade Iran in the 1980s.

Let's end all aggressive military policies (such as the U.S. one), so that no countries (such as Iran) have reason to develop weapons of mass destruction to deter invasion by those aggressive nations. After all, if you were in Iran, you would want to deter the USA's threatened invasions - and the only way that U.S. invasions have been deterred is by getting weapons of mass destruction, like North Korea has done (including the batteries of long-range artillery that is aimed at Seoul).

I recommend you read this article for some information away from the capitalist media, because the capitalist media tries to portray Iran as a threat, which serves the imperialist agenda of U.S. military corporations, oil corporations, and so on - who like the huge U.S. military spending, and would like to invade Iran and get control of the Iranian people's oil wealth (not to mention the other multinational corporations that would like to exploit the workers of Iran).

Here is a great place to start, if you want to learn about U.S. threats against Iran:

Oh, when I said: "I recommend you read this article for some information away from the capitalist media", I didn't mean the MSNBC corporate media article. I meant this NON-capitalist one:

Another U.S. War? Obama Threatens China and Iran

I empathisize for the good Iranians and hope they are successful in overthrowing this despot in the near future before it gets worse in Iran.

Keep ear to ground. With Enrichment falling short there will be heads rolling. Concern is not Iran's missile over here but Israel as putative target. It is important to restrain military threats but sanction to prevent executions.
Not that I have special pipeline; Just i hope common sense.

Terrorism: We have more danger from ability of neighborhood gangs over here than from Iran.
