Belo Monte would be a project bigger than the Panama Canal, flooding at least 400,000 acres of rainforest, displacing 40,000 indigenous and local people--Sign the petition now, before the bulldozers move in -- it will be delivered to Brasilia!

SN. This is so sad. Evil corporatists see a legal way to steal land from indigenous people at last. This is unimaginable.

Indigenous people of Brazil we salute you, and there are people worldwide who will scream against this atrocity.

However, as we scream and point fingers at Brazil my USA friends, we deforest everyday, sell our timber to other countries, continue to build homes (from natural resources), that sit empty, continue to pollute our own air because we don't implement mass transit systems as in Europe and Asia have done, continue to muck up our planet with plastic disposables, etc.

Pam, a little twist on your excellent comment: When will the USA realize they don't "own" the world's "lungs?"

We haven't had such a stellar record on global environmental issues when it comes to pointing fingers at ourselves and stopping our gluttonous appetites for conservation including recognizing global warming.

Signed and noticed.

And well, talking about owning lungs.... nobody, and no country either, "owns" our planet or nature, it was just -on the most- put at our disposal, as something to take care of, something to pass on to our children, and the seventh generation.

NOTED & SIGNED: what a travesty in the aftermath of an historic election result re: 'woman power.'

My feelings at the moment are reminiscent of when Hillary Clinton became the USA Secretary of State and chose to become a warmonger extraordinaire as part of her 'feminism.' Will Brazil's new woman President be a female global-capitalist cipher or a forward-thinking environmentalist? I hope I'm wrong about my reply to that question....

So sad to see more "progress" which causes so much destruction. Will we stop before we completely destroy this beautiful planet and all life on it? Nobody has the right to jeopardize so many lives both human and creatures.

Obviously big corporations are not content with the destruction wreaked by clearing and burning and pollution in the Amazon, it now is actively trying to drown the the lungs of the Planet! Have we totally lost any sense of our own extremely tenuous position on this small, unique blue ball we call home, 'cause we seem hellbent on committing suicide.

Big Business is about ME, ME, ME and NOW, NOW, NOW.
The future does not compute and neither do the citizens that live on this planet.
You can't fight them with rationalizations. They don't care.
