After a hearing that lasted more than 11 hours, a Guatemalan court ordered the trial of former dictator Efraín Ríos Montt (1982-1983), who could face up to 30 years in prison if he is convicted of genocide and crimes against humanity.

The article states: "The prosecution described how during the dictatorship headed by the now 85-year-old Ríos Montt, at least 1,771 people were killed, 1,485 girls were raped, and 29,000 people were forcibly displaced from their homes."

If the Guatemalan army performed these acts while Rios Montt was in power, then he is responsible.

Susanne R is right. And may God send these people get justice in the courts for these atrocities and may they at last find peace after such appalling suffering. The world is watching Guatemala!

I agree with Susanne.
But what surprises me is how he's managed to not be taken out by someone up till now.
Thanks Cal

Anyone sad to hear about this? Nope, didn't think so.

Very good news. Avery bad year for dictators. A wonderful year for the people of those countries, then.

If the bastard can smile about all the deaths there is definately something wrong. This happened in the early eightys and now that he is about to die of old age they finally decide to put him on trial!! This is long overdue. There is no justice on this planet anymore. So he is responsible for all those deaths and he is left 40 years to smile about it with his smug daughter who must be ignorant of the facts or just as complicit. What horrors we all live with.

Why wasn't anyone from Chiquita (used to be United Fruit Company) held responsible? They were an enormous contributing factor to this genocidal war.
