They are routinely served up as a status symbol on the dinner plates of the nouveaux riches in China and Vietnam. Their scales are ground up, like rhino horn, into traditional medicines.

Its disgraceful what some cultures around the world do in sake of tradition. I hope pangolins can be saved before its too late. Thanx Cal!

Oh I've heard about this plenty...and the Chinese are really doing a bang up job of ensuring there's no wildlife left on this planet. Disgustingly these poor animals are sold in open markets throughout China---more importantly it's always the sadistic chosen method of killing these animals that the Chinois choose. Thx Cal

carrier pigeon syndrome?

did you read about the american tourist family in greece? they caught an extraordinarily rare sextopus (yep, an octopus with 6 tentacles), killed it and found it delicious.

Will we as a species ever get over the attitude that the Earth and all in it are ours to exploit as we wish? Cann't we, for once, leave wild animals be and not find some way to turn them into products to be consumed? Agreed Michelle & Natasha, it is high time that the Enlightenment, modern science and modern knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology etc finally extended to Chinese medical practice. While there may be some place for non-animal based Traditional Chinese Medicine, there is no place for superstition in medicine or in medical, therapeutic and treatment practices.

I remember about a year ago a poacher was caught in Zimbabwe with Pangolins, and he said he was taking them to President Mugabe to be paid for them. There is a roaring trade in Pangolins i imagine, now that Rhinos are getting scarcer.

It always amazes me that one of the worlds largest developed nations behave it the most appalling manner towards animals.I get the impression that they like their Japanese neighbors will eat anything that moves. They also teat nature with complete distain.I once saw a video on the internet of a top rate restaurant in China serving up a fish witch had just been lightly seared on a grill and was served while still living it was jumping all over the plate. The people at the table then consumed the poor thing innards and all.Disgusting.

The behaviour of some nations towards animals grows steadily more appalling by the day. I hope that hell for them will involve being treated the way they have treated animals, and for eternity.

Toutes ces nouvelles sont si désespérantes puisque le sort des animaux n'est aucunement pris en considération.

Amazing defenses they've built for themselves yet they are helpless against subhuman poachers. Poach the dang poachers already!
