If people outside the United States are looking for answers why Americans often seem so clueless about the world outside their borders, they could start with what the three major U.S. television networks offered their viewers in the way of news during 20

Thanks Cal for providing the link to the article by Mr. Lobe. I don't watch the TV news broadcasts. I listen to PBS and subscribe to several online "newspapers" from other countries. There are also some good independent online sites that provide great international news. Read and noted.

The function of corporate media, particularly where much of the news is based upon government misinformation, is to control the people by not only controlling about what they think or not, but also how they are to think of the "information" that they are receiving. Believe or not, folks, there is a whole world out there where most of the people can actually get through a day, even a week at a time, without thinking about the US or whether Americans are happy or not. And that leads to the sad realization that the worst thing about American news is that it is so biased and provincial...we need to learn how to see the world through other people's eyes, many of whom do not agree with us on much. Not everyone wants a decadent, toxic, wasteful society.

Well, there you have it. This is the reason Americans are as dumb and stupid as they appear to be. Americans are generally working so hard all the time, that they have very little time for anything out of their extremely small familywork unit except for religion. Many don't even bother to watch the news at all and if they're only watching the major news networks, to include Faux News, they're getting little to no news at all. What news they do get is supplemented by their religious leaders, family and friends. This has been the goal all along by big business and the fundamentalist religious classes in America - keep them stupid and so wrapped up in BS and work that they don't know the difference. It all makes me so sad. Americans are clueless, but it is by design. The corporations running everything in America, to include the major news outlets, which they own, want things exactly as they are; and most Americans are so damn religious that they don't ever question anything. That's what religion does to people - makes them stupid as hell because they are taught not to question anything. You know, just take it on faith. Ridiculous.

I see that the US is no different from the UK in this.I am irritated when I turn on the early morning news from the BBC,Sky TV and even Al Jazeera to be assailed with the latest reports of England's dismal failure to win a cricket mach or the latest football news. This seems to be more important to these channels than any national or International news We get this every morning despite the fact that all of these TV companies have dedicated Sports Channels. Why on earth do they put sport on the national news ?. Keep your sports news on the proper channel for Gods sake.

Nothing new there. Canada is the largest trading partner of the U.S., yet we rarely hit their news unless it is mayor Ford or something bizarre. Many Americans know next to nothing about Canada and many other places in the world. Some Americans in border towns switch to watching Canadian TV coverage of the Olympics when wanting to see how other countries are doing in the standings.

News agencies have an interesting dilemma:

The claim a duty to report important information, but their profit comes from ratings. That messes with reliability because they have to play to target audiences' preconceived notions, and it messes with coverage because it has to be entertaining to keep audiences too. That means the flashier something is, not the more important it is, the more coverage it will get. Bad policies regularly kill more people than war, but they're usually too long to explain in a newspaper article and not cinematic enough to show on screen, at least until it's too late.
