A recent analysis finds illegal mining has destroyed 100 hectares of rainforest in Tambopata National Reserve since July.

"Illegal gold mining is commonplace in southern Peru, and is associated with massive deforestation and mercury poisoning amid other environmental and social concerns." As if massive deforestation isn't bad enough, sediment, the mercury used to extract the gold and undoubtedly the wastes of the activity of 5000 people in that rain forest add to the havoc wreaked by illegal mining in that area. However, it is unlikely that bringing in legal mining would solve much the problem, so all gold mining should be banned from that area in Peru.

I swear these situations irritate me a lot in direct ratio also annoys me comment on them. The reasons are the same as always: billion dollar companies work on land that should be protected (and possibly even were) but between protecting the land and get the money that the company offers, the government of the underdeveloped country prefers the money and the people, the environment, animals and all be damned .
