San Francisco prosecutors are investigating 3,000 criminal cases that may have been compromised by 14 police officers whose biases were revealed by recently uncovered racist, sexist, and homophobic text messages.

“Beyond those 3,000 cases in which the officers took part, the task force will also take on a larger job: evaluating whether a "culture of bias" exists in the police force.”

They’re still evaluating “WHETRHER” whether a "culture of bias" exists!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder what made them suspect that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"All ni**ers must fucking hang": the text messages

The text messages that sparked the probe were originally uncovered in a court document. In March, prosecutors filed a motion opposing bail for former police officer Ian Furminger, who'd been sentenced on corruption-related charges. The motion listed his text messages — which included racial slurs and stereotypes about African Americans. They argued that the content of the text messages indicated he was not worthy of bail.

SICKENING

So much damage done by 14 thugs, they give the rest of the police force a bad name!

The general public trusts that adequate due diligence is practiced during recruitment, to ensure that sociopaths, psychopaths, and racists, are eliminated before training even starts - and that more checks are in place to catch "borderline" cases before trainees become police officers. But, of course, that assumes that the trainers are clear of such faults, too ....

In practice, there are probably better checks in casting for cop TV series than in reality! And of course, there are older members of the force who have been there before such filters were well developed ....

Unless the investigators are "clean" - how can one clean up racism in the police?

Let's just hope the prosecutors were not also trained in Israel... perhaps clean up under the rug ater the FIRST case and not let build up 3,000 clumps of dirt ?! All dirt WILL come to light, no matter how hard and long one tries to hide it!

Good luck with that "evaluation job" -maybe take some ethics class before they start?! Plus some history lesson.
Thank you Sam! Stuff for vomiting.

For a rare occasion I would dare to challenge AniMae's view... I'd turn this around and would LOVE to read about some 14 shining examples who give the rest of the Police a better name!
Maybe I missed such news, then forgive me please!

Cops need to remember that their true purpose is PROTECT and SERVE. They are supposed to be servants of the people, not thugs who brutalize and terrorize. It is sad that so many cops abuse the power given them, when there are plenty of good cops out there who bless the badge.

Racism is alive and kicking, there's simply no denying that, but these text messages from cops in San Francisco are not only shocking because San Francisco has a good reputation for being so liberal, but by how they reveal the callousness of some subgroups within the police and they way they seem give these groups their identity, a way of belonging and bonding.

These are economically difficult and uncertain times and history has shown that fearmongering will divide people who then look for security within their (perceived) own group. Shared bigotry (it goes beyond racism towards blacks) gives people a sense of belonging and false security. Armed to the teeth and militarized, policemen have only become more fearful and really start to hate their "enemy". Each arrest of a black person further sustains their bias: "Look how many we arrest, they must be really evil," and takes cops further down that vicious spiral.

Right wing politicians are experts of using fearmongering to their advantage and now seem to find a willing audience in police forces and military. As the world increasingly shifts to the right in politics, we will see more of this divide and conquer attitude from the powers that be and as a result even ore racism. However, the one good thing about investigations like these is that racism as an endemic plague can no longer be denied and covered up. We will be shocked to learn of the extend it has invaded all aspects of daily life, but when it is in the open, it can also be fought. And how much we can win back is up to us.

Even if one disregarded the racist text messages, the statistics should have made the racist bent of San Francisco's law enforcement and justice system abundantly clear long before.

"African Americans make up only about 5 percent of the city's population but 60 percent to 70 percent of those in San Francisco's juvenile hall. The Examiner reported that 47 percent of people arrested between 2009 and 2014 were black."

The answer is in 2001. Palestinians are the black Americans, the black Americans are the Palestinians.
When US PDs started being trained in Israel they not only imported the counterterrorism tactics they were sent to learn but apparently Israel's racism along with it. Remember, all (Palestinian) citizens are terrorists, so are black Americans.
What the Police corps SHOULD have on their plates are the logos of those Israeli groups like ADL and others who are privately funding those training trips. (additionally to govt. funding).

Racism in the US has been routed there since the founding fathers, as the VOX article rightly says, it got a wake-up call from some light sleep with the Obama presidency. On top of the already existing racism this extensive training for brutlity just gave that racism a new push, possibly welcome by many among those, now perceived as "legally" live it out.

Not quite, Angelika! Slavery was legal under the Constitution. It was only outlawed after the Thirteenth Amendment was ratified. But that did very little to stem out racism.

Could it be there''s a gag order placed on media to not mention the race in each new police shooting? I noticed that many US articles about the Venice killing did NOT say it was a black man shot dead. Some "buried" it further down or had a pic of him, yet not in the headline.

Thanks Angelika for bringing that to our attention. No wonder the police are killing blacks with the same frequency, brutality and immunity thought available only to the IDF to kill Palestinians.

A mercy that San Francisco manager to hire a public defender whose eyes are open.

As far as screening applicants - it is possible to screen for racism. It is possible to screen for mental conditions in the DSM. I'm not sure, in fact I doubt, that it is possible to screen for game-playing. For that you have to go back to the 60's and read Eric Berne on the game of "Cops and Robbers." He was dismissed - but he was, I believe, correct, on this as on a lot of things. He's no longer around to say "I told you so," so I am saying it for him.

Here's the original investigative report, Sam:

US police get antiterror training in Israel on privately funded trips

I don't know if any San Francisco police were trained in Israel, but I don't think we should be allowing our police officers to be trained in a racist environment like Israel. Nor do I think we should be allowing our civil police departments to become militarized like Israel. We do have a National Guard which can be used where civil unrest becomes to great for law enforcement to handle.

Bruce, the problem is they are already. It should have never been allowed to give all that military surplus equipment to the Police! I hope perhaps Ms Lynch could correct that DOJ mistake. I am sure all these things didn't happen and are not happening just randomly or coincidently.

How or why people can be racist, I'll never understand. Like I mentioned many time, I was brought up to respect others.. no matter what. We were place on Earth, to be human to others. Now the ones who don't wish to be that way, that's their problem. We are always going to have a few like that and that's life in the big city. They will learn by their mistakes. Like the old saying treat others like you, yourself, wish to be treated. Thanks Sam

Angelika R (143)
Sunday May 10, 2015, 3:48 am
No Colleen, I fear you're mistaken there beieving that it's just "a few" and "they will learn by their mistakes", neither is it "their problem" ! That's just the points, we're talking about a GROWING NUMBER, way too many already and counting, who do NOT view their actions as "mistakes" and the problems they cause have unfortunately become that of their innocent VICTIMS, less their own!
Nevertheless, I surely agree with the rest you've said above!

I will not use the term "thug" as it is being used to denote the "n" word in this society (usa) now.

Many African Americans in recent times are speaking out on television, radio, and in articles on this interchange of words, that "thug" is the new "n" word.

That being said, I'm glad that much is now coming to light and being spoken about. But if the American people think this is something new, it isn't. As most African Americans, American Indians, and Hispanics know, living in the USA isn't easy. However, now with the police newest military toys being used on more than just minority populations I believe the society at large is getting the point......there is too much violence being projected onto the populace as a whole........and the minorities have always been the most abused.

All our various Institutions are broken in the USA due to the extreme greed and disregard of We The People to placate and protect a few at the top making fabulous fortunes in keeping the Prison Industrial Complex going, a ripping off of all of societies labor and their wealth and efforts being stolen and funneled to the Elites, keeping a Military Industrial Complex going......which is the greatest siphoning of our taxes and draining our Country dry of all it's potential.

One day I hope the American people in mass will understand what both Dwight D Eisenhower and Martin Luther King Jr meant by their words:

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron." Dwight D. Eisenhower

"Racial injustice around the world. Poverty. War. When man solves these three great problems he will have squared his moral progress with his scientific progress. And more importantly, he will have learned the practical art of living in harmony." Martin Luther King Jr.

The violence we project around the world is the violence we have brought back to our streets. Violence begets violence but too few stand up against the violence. Silence is not golden.

Thanks Sam for another great article! Unfortunately I have yet to come across an article posted by you which cheers me up ...!!!

Lots of Green Stars for you, Dandelion, if only I could. Excellent comment (as usual). That racism is alive and thriving is nothing new really - what is shocking is to see for a change numbers. We are truly evolving in the wrong direction - would this be "devolution"?

What is achieved by replacing "nigger" with "thug" other than being politically correct? I'd rather see a real change of mind based on actions/behavior in true life than these cosmetics which only further help to camouflage the grim and very often deadly realities.

Barbara D is also not on C2 at this time. Did she and Bruce have an issue that got them both suspended? I must say, I've never seen Bruce be anything but polite even if he is passionate in his comments and quite knowledged. Best I can offer as I truly do not know.

Thursday May 14, 2015, 1:07 am

Hi Dandelion - the name "Barbara D." is not active at the moment ... she as such is around as we all can see. But that's not the issue.

I've been following relatively close discussions when I saw that Bruce participates; simply because he has a lot to say and it is extremely pleasant and rewarding to exchange thoughts with him or to just read his well balanced and extremely polite comments. Even if Barbara would have tried to egg him on in her usual "elaborate and kind" way (to which we all are subjected) ... he never ever accepted to retaliate in kind.

THIS is just not in his vein; he is much too polite, cool-headed, logical and factual.

There is simply no reason whatsoever to suspend a participant of Bruce's standing! NONE!! I do hope that there is another reason for his disappearance and would love to read a note from Care2Support why Bruce has been taken off our friend's and contacts' list - IF Care2 suspended him that is.

IF he chose to leave Care2 ... than I can just wish him well and regret that I'll not have the opportunity anymore to read him!

Have a nice day!

Eleonora, I'll try to find that info/link again, ok. Had I not read it, I surely wouldn't make such claims!

About Bruce- gee, now that you all mention it...my best guess is he had yet another clash with C2 support/ E.

@ Eleonora- "I'm one of those who only know of a few ones ... would you have more specific info or links to that subject?"
Don't know which few ones you've known about.. but the link provided here by me mentions at least the training in Mexico ("Israel’s security forces have also trained police in Mexico since 1994, originally in response to the Zapatista uprising in Chiapas.")

Can't find immediately the latest one I read but here are more mentionings and hints of the subject in a small selection:
http://edition.cnn.com/2014/05/13/sport/football/world-cup-brazil-security-football/
("Brazil signed a $350 million deal with Israel in 2009 to supply drones for the World Cup and the 2016 Olympics,..", -"Further figures made available by the government show that 9,928 police professionals have undergone special training designed for the World Cup as well as the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.")

http://www.crimethinc.com/texts/fx/worldcupbrazil.html
("Another $1 billion has been spent on training and weapons to repress demonstrations. Israel is providing training to the police and the army, and is selling drones and other anti-riot weapons and devices. The military police are being trained by the French police as well as the former American mercenary company, Blackwater [which has changed its named to Academi]. Rumors that the huge organized criminal groups in Brazil want to repeat the actions of 2006, when they brought all of São Paulo to a halt, are being used to justify these operations.")

I think if Bruce was going to leave on his own accord he'd of told his connected friends. It is with hopes he'll be on soon again and most likely is as Angelika mentions with dispute of another kind. As for the other, wouldn't surprise me of two ongoing profiles as it's happened before, seems to be a favorite tactic of the right wing types.

Eleonora Oldani (37)
Thursday May 14, 2015, 11:18 am

Thanks Angelika for the additional information - that's quite enough for the time being; I'll do some additional research on the subject. It is interesting how Israel has acquired a position of training so many police forces as well as "rebel" forces as well as either supplying weapons (like in Sri Lanka where she supplied the gov as well as the Tamil Tigers) or transferring them (like in the Iran-Iraq war where the US supplied through Israel the Iranian gov and through Egypt the Iraqi gov) or training "rebels" (like the Syrian "rebels" cum ISIS in cooperation with the US). See also the attempted sale of nukes by Israel to South Africa. War, turmoil and repression seems to be a very lucrative business!

Yes, Dandelion, that's absolutely my opinion too. I'm aware (sure like many others of his friends) that there was e.g. a discussion some time back - Question about Moderation--Bruce C.D. - which IMO is a another prime example of how Bruce conducts discussions in a correct and adult manner; definitely NOT in a way to be suspended or even banned ... IF that's the case. Frankly - I don't see Care2Support doing something like that. I simply refuse to believe it. There must be another reason for his disappearance.

I guess we have to leave it at that for the time being unless someone can and will shed more light on this unfortunate situation.

As for the multiple accounts - I'm aware that there are a number of them using different "names" in order to seemingly boost their impact and all come from the same corner. As it seems to be impossible for a reason or another to stop this misuse of Care2 website the only remedy is to ignore them once spotted/identified. If one pays a bit attention to the linguistic semantics it's rather easy to do just that ... and from there on "they" are just overlooked - LOL. They do their cause a very big disservice with such behavior but that's not my problem!

IF he was banned or suspended I assume he could resort to the same tactic as Barbara/Sheyna/noname/Ari/what-have-you ... resorts and open various profiles with different names - LOL? After all it seems to be tolerated on Care2 ...
