Warring forces in South Sudan have carried out horrific crimes against children, including castration, rape and tying them together before slitting their throats, the UN has said.

War, what is it good for??

From the article:
"Imagine the psychological and physical effects on these children – not only of the violence inflicted on them but also the violence they are forced to inflict on others."

A quarter of a million children face starvation , while two-thirds of the country's 12 million people need aid, with 4.5 million people facing severe food insecurity, according to the UN.

"In the name of humanity and common decency this violence against the innocent must stop," he said.

Thanks Sam. :(

Yes, we keep silent or worse, we don't even know about it because we're far to busy with our own, relatively petty, problems in our little part of the world. Neither is the world outraged when the ICC in The Hague demands that South Africa detains and hands over visiting Omar al-Bashir of Sudan and they just ignore it and let him go home. This man stood at the cradle of the atrocities in the war of independence of South Sudan and is suspected of having a hand in what is happening there right now.

Juba/ South Sudan is a crazy, tragic environment.
When did they know a period of peace? Have to go a long way back ... More than 17 years war with the North, a stretch of partial but unstable peace then more conflict; conflict between the peoples in the area;

There are divisions in all directions - not only with the Northerners (now al-Bashir, but Numeiry wasn't much better ) although the cultural division is huge ..... but also between different ethnic groups. They've also undermined their own "independence".

And children & women pay the price ... as so often in conflict.
And the world turns a blind eye.

Thanks for this article, Sam. The world is not really silent – they’re not interested to exploit this conflict as it doesn’t involve the “villains of the day”. We were told way back then that the conflict is religion based. Once the North and the South reached an agreement whereas both profited from the oil revenues, the Qur’an and the Bible were put back on the shelves and peace returned. Not to the liking of the outsiders. Sudan had to be cut to a smaller size at all costs. Therefore, the “religious” conflict had to be fanned again – successfully so. North and South separated.

And now? What do we make with a conflict between Christians and Christians? Nothing! No interest really.

At the time of the flare-up to big scale I marked a few articles which might be of interest.

Tragic. After many years of persecution and conflict on religious grounds, having finally achieved independence, they're now fighting amongst themselves along tribal lines.

And as always it's the innocent who pay the price.

May peace soon return to the region.
