TRUSSVILLE, Ala. — What investigators had initially believed to be a case of animal hoarding turned out to be a puppy mill operation, Jefferson County authorites confirm.

Acting on a citizen complaint, the Greater Birmingham Humane Society and Trussville Police arrived at the Floyd Bradford Road home on Monday. There were concerns the dogs were neglected or abused. According to a GBHS spokesperson, it was determined the animals were being sold on Facebook.

Eighty-three animals were initially surrendered by the owner. One of the pregnant females gave birth, so the number is now up to 89. GBHS is asking for volunteers and donations to help care for the animals. A number of Parakeet birds were also surrendered.

Rescue crews describe the conditions at the home as deplorable. All the animals are doing well now with vet care and grooming.

The case is actively under investigation, according to Trussville Police officers. Possible charges include cruelty to animals and operating a business without a license.

GBHS would to remind the public to be very wary of buying animals off the internet. Only deal with reputable breeders. Visit the homes where the dogs are being bred.

There are plenty of dogs up for adoption at local shelters.

Thank you dear Ginger! Happy to see you here, but so ticked off that this happens and PEOPLE DON'T KNOW and People don't care sometimes.
