This short five-minute firework display, accompanied by some tall ships and yachts on the harbour, will feature a colourful display fired from barges only, not from the Sydney Harbour Bridge," APEC spokeswoman Anne Fulwood said.

"It will complement the APEC logo that will shine from the Sydney Harbour Bridge from September 2 to 9.

"The fireworks are a very short part of the evening and I would not suggest that it's worthwhile for the public to try to view the display."

The event will be staged late on September 8, after 750 world leaders and other officials from countries which border the Asia-Pacific attend a 45-minute performance inside the Sydney Opera House.

The performance will feature more than 200 young artists, including singer Christine Anu.

Ms Fulwood said the concert and fireworks were designed to "show our guests from the Asia-Pacific a celebration of a confident nation rejoicing and proud of a wealth of talented performers".

But she said the best place for others to see the fireworks was on television "to minimise possible disruption".

The Opera House is in the centre of a locked-down security zone during APEC.

So confident they have to close the city down for 7 days for security reasons. Yeah, let's show world leaders we have money to burn on stupid crap for their enjoyment, as if they're not taking enough away from the taxpayer as it is.
One of those tall ships was sitting on the beach last week, wonder if that was part of the grand scheme of things.
