AN innocent holiday snap of a family playing with their father has drawn a mystery man into the Madeleine McCann disappearance.

It has also sparked police moves to take formal statements from anybody who may have had anything to do with the McCann family during their ill-fated stay in Portugal.

The broad, bald man appeared in a photo taken by Mrs McCann as Madeleine played with her father Gerry and two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie shortly before her disappearance.

Strangely, the man was again seen walking behind Briton Robert Murat who was a suspect in the case early in the investigation.

Police would say little about the photographed man other than to confirm he has been identified and spoken to, as would a large number of others in coming days. They refused to say how or why he appears to have been everywhere that involved the McCanns.

Meanwhile, Kate McCann could be re-interviewed on the orders of a judge as police struggle to gather enough evidence to charge her, it emerged yesterday.

Investigating judge Pedro dos Anjos Frias is expected to order Madeleine's mother back to Portugal for a fresh grilling over the accusation she accidentally killed the little girl and then mounted an elaborate cover-up with her husband Gerry.

Detectives failed to extract a confession from the couple in two days of heated confrontations in Portugal, and police fear their case may founder without one.

The embattled McCanns have challenged officers to come up with a body or abandon their campaign to "frame" them.

Police also said they would speak again to numerous witnesses including an English sailor who owns a yacht in the port of Lagos just east of Luz. One police theory is that Madeleine's body was dumped at sea from a yacht.

Friends of the McCanns who were with them on the night the four-year-old disappeared on May 3, and Mr Murat, are also about to be re-interviewed over conflicting stories.

Those to be spoken to include friend Jane Turner, who told police she saw an unknown man carrying a child in a blanket through Praia da Luz 30 minutes before Kate McCann discovered her daughter missing, and her partner Russell O'Brien who said he saw Robert Murat outside the McCann apartment.

Chief Inspector Olegario Sousa said detectives believed more than one person was involved in the disappearance of Madeleine and more suspects would emerge once further DNA test results were received.

Police are also seeing if there are any connections between Mr Murat and Mr McCann with some suggestions the pair knew each other from Leicestershire.

WHY, in Heaven's name, would ANYONE want to kill a Precious Baby Angle like Madden in the first place?? And WHY didn't her Mom call an ambulance if she thought she'd "accidently" hurt her?? Madden may have still been alive if someone had called for help!!

Helen, thank you for the article. I keep having the feeling I have missed something everytime I read about this case. It reminds me of Swiss cheese: full of holes. Does not seem a happy end will come of this. Holly T

Yes I have asked that question too CP. Why didn't they call an ambulance? Maybe because they are both Dr's and the Mum is an anetheitist, so they would lose their licences if they killed Maddy.

Holly I thing the Police are pulling out any straws they can at present to wrap up this case and put the blame on someone...sadly the wrong person could end up being charged over her disappearance/abduction/murder.

And then there is the possibility the parents just didn't do it.

the whole situation needs to be re-investigated. they have lost valuable time in finding this precious child. i would not rule out mom...however...there were many people there that night of maddie's disappearance...and the medical thing about the overdosing...that really bothers me. did mom do that on a daily basis to calm maddie down? why did she give her 4 year old child something like that? and...lastly..but not least in the loop,..why did the parents leave three little children ALONE while they went to have dinner? lots of questions to a very tragic story. thanks, helen, for keeping up on this story...

The Mother is an Anaethetist, so mistakes of overdosing should not be an issue if she knew her job. Something is not right here either.

Thanx Helen. Noted. Sorry if any of my posts put any misinfo about - the French were obviously reporting on supposition. I honestly do not think we will ever know what really happened to this beautiful little angel - what an amazing little face she has - very, very, sad.

Yes I should have remembered the French have a way of overexagerating in news. It was a French newspaper that reported the news here to Australia, re the overdose

I still can't believe the parents had anything to do with it! Since Portugal never had a case like this before, I still feel they framed Gerry and Kate to bring this investigation to an end. Thanks for another article on Maddy and keeping us informed.

Hi everyone,
I read Kate McCann was a medical doctor along with her husband. We have no idea if Maddie was drugged or not, but given that she was hyperactive along with the twins, it is possible they were taking medication like ritilin or similar for that condition. Until a body is found, it will all be speculation.
Princess, Kate McCann never said she accidentally hurt Maddie. Therefore, why would she call an ambulance because that is what happened? Mrs McCann maintains that Maddie was not hurt in any way, and that includes accidentally. What the police investigation of the McCanns brings out is all sorts of inconsistencies around the whole affair including who did what when checking on the kids, and also of their statements................................ Although there are traces of sedative in Maddie's blood, they cannot tell how much, only her body can tell them that. So it is possible she was given something to keep her quiet and it went wrong. Accidents do happen, and doctors can makde mistakes! It is less likely to happen with a doctor, but they are not infallable.

I had heard that the father gave the children a tranquilizer that night. Where, I do not remember now. Been reading so much about this case. But, also this is one case. How many are out there that are not getting the
attention this one is? I hope they are innocent. That is all I can say at this point.

Hi Sharen,
A tranquilzer is a form of sedative. It has the same affect basicallly. It was stated, rightly or wrongly at this point, that they found traces of sedative in Mddie's sample. It is possible they were sedated to make sure they slept through the evening and something went wrong, or that the kidnapping was innidental. It was pure luck that the gril the man had picked out was sedated! Meant she would not give him away. It could be a whole set of circumstances put together, but still remains spectulation at this juncture.
