Compostable or Recyclable? Why Bioplastics Are Causing An Environmental Headache

Your instinct might be to put that "PlantBottle" in the compost bin, and to put the clear plastic cup in the recycling bin. But in this case, you'd be wrong on both counts.

When I was a kid, the soda bottler paid us a couple cents a bottle through the gas station for what we scrounged along the roadside as we cleaned litter voluntarily. Paper - newspapers, writing paper, paper bags, cardboard - was collected by boyscouts with Radio Flyer waggons and developing business sense. Milk bottles went back to the dairy for refills. Eggshells and surplus or wilted vegetables went out with the yard waste as compost and future soil. Nowadays they're making it all too complex; no-one will wash trash, separate more than about a half dozen categories, or scrutinise some container for superficial labelling instead of just tossing it. Government can make a mess of the simplest things...

This all makes me SO MAD! Again, why can't the government (or governments of the world) say there are going to be 5-10 types of plastic almost all of which are to be recyclable. I would abolish most one use plastics. Seriously! People survived quite well before many of these problematic disposable products. Things should be made to last. Our first family toaster lasted 30 years. My cousin has one that is almost 60 years old (his parents got it as a wedding gift in the 50's) and it still works. I HATE all this disposable crap that is ruining our planet. As far as compostable plastics made from plants. I don't really like this idea for the same reasons I am against most biofuels. You just know that more rain forests will be clearcut to grow the plants to make the plastic. How is that better than using petroleum based plastics? I think it is even worse because there are then fewer trees making oxygen and cleaning the air, more carbon released into the air from the burning of the trees that were cut down, less CO2 in what I think is called carbon sinks, more water, fertilizer, and pesticides are used to grow the plants to make the "bio plastics", . . . . It is all just STUPID! Damn humans and our ever increasing need for convenience. People need to think longterm if the planet and our species (along with all other species) is going to survive. How ironic that the last species to get on board will be the shortest lived and the one that kills the planet. Sad!

I like you A.W. I really do. You know what's the main problem here, in Transylvania? The lack of interest. I'll give you 2 examples: One of my friends and I wanted to start a small comapny, for recycling the trash, that the trash company collects and dumps it at the end of the city as it is. We were talking to the governor, who told us, that these things should not be a problem for us, but if it is,and we'd like to recycle, they will prosecute us for maddling with the town's property. What the hell?! Morons!!! The second thing, which made me lose interest in this country, was back in 2008,when i was legally off age. I wanted to join the greenpeace party, i was willing to pay a monthly membership fee, but after i've been called by the president ( probably in december or so) I'm still waiting untill this day, for them to confirm my freaking membership, so i can take part of their plan. I'm not surprised at all, that this kind of thing dosen't happen only at my country, and we are the ones who should be blamed for. We voted ( or didn't vote at all) for these stupid leaders...

Just had the "what to do with this plastic cup" conversation with a friend the other day. Recycling he said and he was right. Ridiculous that I even had to choose a plastic cup because bringing your own container was not allowed. On the upside at our local fair there was a booth that would fill up your container with "real" lemonade for only $2. Saved her the money on cups and promoted less waste. She was very cool.
