There would be just as many problems in weekend voting. Possibly more. Longer lines due to so many people off work which would discourage people. More awareness for early voting polls which open before the election day and absentee voting. Some states do require a valid reason for absentee voting, but many more have no requirements. They allow anyone to obtain an absentee ballot to submit must because they are too lazy to go to the polls. My state is one that has no requirements. The problem is no one is educating people in their particular states. I polled many of my friends and asked and they didn't know they could submit an absentee. They still thought it had strict requirements. The dems, especially should just run ads encouraging people to vote absentee. Opening of early polls voting, I believe, is just in a few specific places which isn't accessible to voters unless you live in a big city. Americans living abroad can submit an absentee ballot online. I did this and it is truly easy. So, the dems, instead of trying to change the system which would have just as many problems should encourage more absentee ballots and lobby in the states that have strict requirements to loosen their restrictions.

Elections in Australia are always held on a Saturday. Early morning and late afternoon is a bit busy, but I'm usually in and out in 10 minutes. There are always plenty of polling places, so no excuse!
We also have early voting, and everyone is sent a postal vote - lots of choices. Mind you, we have compulsory voting, which if adopted in USA would solve a lot of problems.
