How should I prepare for life without oil? With claims that we've passed the peak of oil production, it's not enough just to say no to plastic bags.

There has never been a sustainable growth rate in oil consumption or population or business or anything else. The doubling effect in sustained growth makes rhis impossible where limited resources are a fact of life. Boty...is right and we can't sustain life on an emotion based system of thought either. Here is a fact about population based on an immutable mathematical equation: in order to continue to live on the planet, we will have to die at the same rate we are born. The whole 1st world is being lied to through the television set. If you are interested I am gathering the resources to create a global television station to combat the current available media on it's own turf. We need money and skill...get a hold of me.

It is important that people be made aware of the changes that are going to be necessary when the oil runs out, but it is not the crisis this article makes it out to be. We no longer need oil to make plastic; it can be made from corn or a number of other agricultural products. Does anyone remember how good milk, Coke and Pepsi tasted when they were packaged in glass bottles? As for the energy aspect of the crisis that too is already being addressed by a number of companies and it has nothing to do with bio fuels. Bio fuels are a stop gap to the real solution Hydrogen. The changes that will have to take place in our daily life styles, well those changes need to be made even if we weren’t running out of oil.

Goodbye freeways...exit ramps...welcome to stables and horses again...

I work in Detroit and I swear I saw a horse and carriage when I looked on the window on the 8th floor of the office building I work in...but ***sign*** it was a truck...such an illusion!

I can't wait for this switch!

There is no replacement for oil. Ralph is right bio-fuels are not the answer nor tar sands or in fact hydrogen unless you want thousands of nuclear power stations in order to produce the electricity needed to generate the hydrogen. Also the uranium needed is also declining and is a finite resource. We can not continue our destructive way of life. We have cheap food because of cheap oil, how can we feed 6.5 billion people in the world without the mechanised and petro-chemical enhancers originating from oil, we can't. We have to create a simpler way of life and think about what is important, is it the purchase of the next generation plasma TV or is it to share things with people you love. If anyone is interested in Doug's comments on growth take a look at Arithmetic Population and Energy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-QA2rkpBSY

Too many are wringing their hands asking questions instead if contacting lawmakers and reps in government to post heir concerns. The proposal to use corn as biofuel is absurd...burn foos as fuel, raise basic food prices globally and exacerbate the starvation already at critical mass. Right down the corporate Fascists' alley! If we could eliminate the world's hysteria over legalizing hemp, the answers are there. Plastics, fuel, textiles and even medicines could all be non-issues if hemp processing and cultivation was utilized. The corporate media isn't the problem..they're just facilitating the corporate agenda by blacking out important information that could be used to remedy a huge portion of the issues we face. The media will tell us about the dire problems and consequences but neglect to inform us of the practical solutions so Big Pharma and Big Oil can continue bleeding us dry.
