PETITION THE WHITE HOUSE - Put Bernie Sanders on the Washington D.C. Ballot - URGENT - PLEASE SIGN

US Politics & Gov't  (tags: 2016 primaries, Washington DC, D.C. Democratic Party, D.C. Board of Elections, Bernie Sanders missing, ballot, Party admin error, civil rights, voters' rights )

Bernie Sanders has been left off the ballot in D.C. because the D.C. Democratic Party filed his paperwork a day late with the D.C. Board of Elections, although both Sanders & Clinton filed their initial $2,500 registration fee on time. ACTION NEEDED

Sanders Likely on D.C. Ballot Despite Challenge
SORRY - "Likely" just isn't good enough ..... he'd paid the registration fee in time; the DC Democratic Party failed to act ....

No, Bernie Sanders was not kicked off the D.C. ballot
- Washington Post version .... And as we know, they aren't Bernie fans at the WP!!
NB - as far as I've read .... nobody has claimed that he WAS "kicked off" ..... he simply was refused, supposedly due to late filing ... by the DC Democratic Party (NOT the Sanders' Campaign)

And NB
The mainstream media plays the "PROBABLY", "LIKELY" line about the situation being corrected .....

Can we trust this uncertainty? Or is it a great way of stopping the rocking of a boat ... which certain people HOPE will set out without Bernie on board?

Noted, signed shared. Thank you, Evelyn ( & Janice for sharing with me via private message). But, uhm, I hate to tell you this folks, but this petition is kind of misdirected, targeted to the wrong place. While true that the White House is in D.C., the White Hosue does not set or have direct power to set or change policy in D.C.,. D.C. has it's own governing Government bodies, cityc council, as wellas county officials, etc., and is much like other U.S. territories, CONGRESS sets the overall rules and makes laws and policy regarding U.S. territories and districts, and each district or territory has their own semi-autonomous governing bodies that set and make local rules and laws. To the best of my understanding, neither Obama or the White House has the power to change any decisions related to ballot placements or eligibilities. I could be wrong about this, but I am fairly certain. D.C. would and should have it's own Board of Elections or other governing body overseeing local ballots and elections, which would be the appropriate place to petition.

Or, perhaps, even the Federal Board of Elections, but I am almost positive the White House (the administration itself) does not have the direct power to either set or change ballot rules, policies, or determine eligibility for either local or national candidates in D.C.

RJ - This is the Administration's official petition site, not just the White House!

" Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

-The First Amendment, United States Constitution

The right to petition your government is guaranteed by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. We the People provides a new way to petition the Obama Administration to take action on a range of important issues facing our country. We created We the People because we want to hear from you. If a petition gets enough support, White House staff will review it, ensure it’s sent to the appropriate policy experts, and issue an official response.

The idea of petitioning the White House or the government isn’t new, but this online platform is. Since the White House has never featured anything like this, we expect to make some adjustments to improve the platform based on how people use the system and your feedback. We may change the signature threshold so that the workload for responding to petitions in a timely fashion is manageable. You can always view the current signature thresholds on the Terms of Participation page.

As we make adjustments to how the system works, we’ll keep you posted on those changes using the White House blog, and you can see all blog posts related to We the People. And if you have any specific suggestions to improve We the People please let us know. "

Thresholds to be reached:
To cross the first threshold and be searchable within WhiteHouse.gov, a petition must reach 150 signatures within 30 days.

To cross the second threshold and require a response, a petition must reach 100,000 signatures within 30 days.

And to get a response means a spotlight is on the issue .... making nasty little games rather more visible!!

DC to Hold Emergency Vote to Get Bernie Sanders on Democratic Primary Ballot

"The Sanders campaign had submitted its Washington, D.C., ballot registration on time, but the local Democratic party sent candidates' registration info late
By Tom Sherwood

The D.C. Council will hold an emergency vote to put Bernie Sanders' name on the Democratic primary ballot after the D.C. Democratic Party submitted registration paperwork a day late and a voter filed a challenge.

The D.C. Board of Elections determined the board cannot certify Sanders for inclusion on the June 14 primary ballot because the local Democratic party submitted his name, as well as Hillary Clinton's, one day after the legally binding deadline, sources closes to the board said.

A Democratic voter in D.C. filed a challenge against the Sanders campaign's registration. No complaint was filed against Clinton's registration. The period in which a challenge can be filed has passed.

D.C. Council Member-at-Large Anita Bonds, who is chairwoman of the D.C. Democratic Party, is preparing emergency legislation to clear up the issue. The vote could occur as early as Tuesday.

As News4 was first to report, the Sanders campaign, as well as Hillary Clinton's campaign, each submitted registration fees of $2,500 on time earlier this month in advance of the June 14 Democratic primary.

But D.C. Democrats did not email the candidates' registration information to the D.C. Board of Elections until a day after the registration deadline of March 16.

Bonds said in a memo to Council Chairman Phil Mendelson proposing the vote that parties should be given 24 hours between when candidates register with parties and when parties must submit the registration information to the Board of Elections.

Sanders' camp had until 7 p.m. March 16 to register with the D.C. Democrats, but the Board of Elections closed that day at 4:45 p.m.

A Sanders spokesman said the campaign believes D.C. residents still will be able to cast their votes for the candidate.

"We did what D.C. law requires in order to get Bernie on the ballot, and we are confident he will be on the ballot," the spokesman said in a statement. "

Thanks, everyone. And, thank you, Evelyn for sharing info about White House Petitions, etc., - although I was already well aware of it … have been signing petitions sent there since it’s inception, including some I have authored myself - and for your a other posts in this thread.

That said, I still stand by my initial comment, this petition is misdirected, as the White House DOES NOT have the power to directly influence decisions or terms for elections in D.C. itself. While I appreciate your point about raising awareness, the issue is already in the news, it doesn’t directly address those in position to make decisions on this matter. Have down some research on this, and confirmed my initial understanding, I’ll share that info here next. Thank you, again.

After doing some investigation, have found the proper place to direct any petitions and concerns about ballot issues and eligibility in ALL elections in Washington D.C., the ONLY body that has any power to address election and ballot concerns in the District.

It is the District Of Columbia Board of Elections.

Also, I have confirmed that Bernie is INDEED and IN FACT on the Ballot for D.C. in the PRIMARIES in June 2016.

This is confirmed by the D.C, Board of Elections. So, this petition now is pointless in any case, the issue, if there was ever one, is clearly resolved now.

Please visit he following link on the D.C. Board of Elections site to confirm for yourself (it is a PDF document of Eligible candidates on the ballot). Thank you.

The list is dated 23rd March. (03/23/2016 List of Candidates for June 2016 Primary Election) It has not been updated
It may well be the list that led to the filing of the objection
NB - there is NO date given in this list for either "Pick Up Date" or "Date Filed" for Bernie Sanders' candidacy (nor for "Rocky" Roque De La Fuente's)

Bernie's filing was rejected on the 24th -
AFTER this list was shared

So this document doesn't serve as confirmation that the problem of the rejection has now been resolved. I wish it did!

Sorry about giving redundant info, RJ.

If the Tuesday meeting does not lead to correcting the official position of Bernie Sanders (with dates duly entered in that list) ... perhaps there will be a petition to the DC Board of Elections .... which certainly would make sense.

Situation to be monitored carefully!!!

We encourage you to use the We the People platform to petition the Administration to take action on the policy issues you care about. If a petition gets enough support, White House staff will review it, ensure that it's sent to the appropriate policy experts for their review, and issue an official response.

I don't think it's an accident either!

The published list (March 23rd date) appears to show no FILING for Bernie -
Which could be reason for opposition to his inclusion ..... had he not filed. But the DC Democrat Party says they filed both documents at the same time (after the Board of Elections office had closed on the deadline day. So why is there a blank in those columns alongside Bernie's name?
And why was it not noticed & corrected by the DC Democrat Party when it was published?
NB - this is still the official "status" list posted - no updating since 23rd ....

Sorry - with what has been going on in terms of spokes in wheels ..... I can't see this as accidental: either extreme carelessness & inefficiency, or another dirty trick.

And I don't think it is wise to "assume" that it can be straightened up very easily .... otherwise, why are they using "conditional" words about this, admitting that it will be a challenge, mentioning need for special legislation .... It clearly ISN'T just a simple question of "It WAS submitted on time, since the regulations don't specify "before close of business" - "OOPS - sorry - we'll put that right!"

It is strange that there is NOTHING showing up on this in the last 2 days ....
Neither a clear firm statement "Situation resolved"
Nor any update .....

This situation is the kind that leaves one thinking "It just can't be true, this is too blatant a dirty game (especially as Clinton's papers were filed at the same time - her dates of filing show as 03/16, and there has been no objection) ....But reports confirming it came from across the board ....
Can one afford to sit back & say "well, this is so extreme that it will obviously be corrected"?
My feeling is - No - & we need to keep an eye open - Maybe Tuesday will see a decision in the "right" direction? (DC Council due to hold special meeting on the "challenge") I certainly hope so.

Meanwhile - the message "We are watching" can't do any harm!

At a first stage, I think this is better than giving the impression that nobody is worried ...

BUT - if the meeting (hopefully on Tuesday) to take steps to allow a correction to the slip up fails to lead to firm full inclusion of Bernie Sanders' name in the list for certification .....

Perhaps at that stage a stronger petition could be developed for presentation to the D.C. Board of Elections. By someone who could go in person to present it (with many signatures) in time before the date when the list has to be certified? Change/ Petition Site/ SumOfUs might be good vehicles for a more targeted petition should the problem arising from this DC Democrat Party administrative error not be resolved rapidly

But meanwhile - a petition exists - and lack of signatures sends a message "not so many people are worried about the impact of this error"

A Sanders spokesman said the campaign believes D.C. residents still will be able to cast their votes for the candidate.
"We did what D.C. law requires in order to get Bernie on the ballot, and we are confident he will be on the ballot," the spokesman said in a statement.
http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/DC-to-Hold-Emergency-Vote-to-Get-Bernie-Sanders-on-Democratic-Primary-Ballot-374160651.html

The only thing that changed this time, she said, was someone challenged Sanders.
Bonds, who also serves on the D.C. City Council, said she would submit a "clarification" in the city rules that would allow a 24-hour grace period after the filing deadline, putting Sanders on the ballot.

I hope that it WILL be put right rapidly -

The challenge may well have been by someone being meticulous - because the posted list definitely gives the impression that Bernie's documents had not been filed (RJ Hughes gave the link to the pdf file, Friday April 1, 2016, 1:38 pm & I checked it carefully) ... which would justify his exclusion were it accurate. Needn't even be a pro-Clinton Democrat .... just someone being very particular about the rules. (NB - the objection was over a week after the deadline, and the day after the list was posted - and the list hadn't been updated/corrected as of 2 April ...)
