One of the underlying justifications for free speech was put forward by the great liberal thinker John Stuart Mill. He argued convincingly more than 150 years ago that unrestricted discussion helps the discovery of truth. Interesting analysis - complex!

"Fake news is nothing new – there have probably always been news reports that were deliberately inaccurate. But it was arguably rarer in the days before the internet because it tended to be prevented by media regulators, defamation law and newsroom editorial controls."

I'm not entirely sure the author is correct! I suspect that in the past we have remained largely unaware of some of the fake news fed us for political/power/ influence purposes! Whereas now - with a will and an effort, we can dig out different perspectives, think them through, analyse & come to our own conclusions.

Or, of course, we can just revert to internet sources that will support our personal preferred mindset ... and repeat their versions without bothering to verify what is fake/ manipulative and what is not ...

Nowadays, it's up to individuals to take responsibility for their own role in how news circulates ...

The paradox and irony of "Fake News" is that it's been with us for a long time, largely unchallenged, because it's the only news most of us knew. . . . the "Mainstream press/media" machine.

Sharing news article over social media to raise and spread awareness.
