Ruger is a guide dog, and for the past nine years, he has guided Kevin Coughlin, a resident of Murray Hill, around the city. He has waged high-profile fights to require businesses to open their doors to guide dogs, as they are required to do by law.

Thank you, Mandy, this is a lovely, heart warming story and it brings back such beautiful memories.

My daughter fell in love with a "guide dog" named SUGAR; she belonged to a friend of mine who has been blind since birth. Sugar is a golden retriever who guided my friend around NYC for many years while he did IT work for financial institutions; every secretary kept special treats for Sugar and she was always welcome on Roosevelt Island, a special enclave in NYC where no dogs are allowed ... except for service animals.

Sugar went blind and deaf and faced retirement in Colorado, far, far away from NYC where she worked and lived for so many years ... getting on and off subway trains and buses; dodging crowds and feet that might injure her lovely paws, getting splashed with muddy water and dirty snow from the traffic at street corners flooded from snow and rain storms.

She never complained; she worked tirelessly; she was friendly to everyone she met.

We loved her very, very much.

Sugar was retired to Colorado where a family adopted her and a little boy reads stories to her, in her old age, even though she can't hear so well and now she can't see any more ... still this little guy guides her, now, with a leash and a gentle touch and many, many loving hugs.

These wonderful dogs are angels walking in our midst.

Thank you, Manyd, for this story.

Mandy, I'm sorry, I misspelled your name in the last line, above ... tears are running down my face ...

Thanks for sharing this story! I agree with you, they are angels. My husband had a guide dog for 12 years. He helped him in so many ways and was not just a service animal but also a pet much loved by all of us. After he was too old to work and retired, we kept him as "normal" pet in our family. It broke our hearts when he passed away last year and he will always have a special place in my heart.
