Intracardial injections, commonly referred to as "heart sticks," are considered inhumane and cruel when performed on animals that aren't anesthetized or comatose. Using the "heart stick" method is painful because the needle containing sodium pentobarbital

Someday everything due by Karma will come around, I hope. I do not know if I will live long enough to see justice served in all the corners of the world where it should be...I hope I do.

I once spent 3 months caretaking a "refuge" ... and while I was there it WAS a refuge ... but had to call the retired vet who worked for them, twice, to put sick animals down. There I learnt all about the heart stick torture. It was only done on the sick cats and that was bad enough. he said that it would take too long and be too traumatic to find a vein ... bullshit! I was horrified. Signed with lovev for all those that have been dispatched in this sad way, with tears.

I have not heard of this procedure before but possibly because it is not an alternative offered in the UK. Number 111.

#141 HOW can this possibly be an 'alternative' to 'finding' a vein? It's sad and just wrong. STOP this pain of those innocent beings we humans have decided are no longer worthy to live life on this earth. They suffer enough!

Signed and my comments follow:

These are the last breaths these animals will ever take. They are not disposable articles of refuse to be thrown away-they are hapless victims of an uncaring society-can you not respect them enough to give them an easier departure...

Signed........with much crying.
I USED to volunteer at a 'shelter'.....humane I leave out because it sure wasn't. I saw this done..held that little one in his he looked at me with huge dark eyes that held the question 'what did I do?'....I cried as he cried silent tears just rolling out of his eyes. The 'control officer' came about 15 mins later and said very coldly 'so that one didn't do it huh? This ONE WILL' and shot him with the rifle dart into his heart once again. The screams I will NEVER forget nor the look on his beautiful face....he had just enough energy to scream when that dart hit his heart again. I held him crying with him until he crossed the rainbow bridge.
After he did so......I was furious...I backed that 'control officer' into a corner and said this is for Buddy.......kneed him in his ..well private area and HARD he doubled over in pain my right fist caught him in the mouth......he came straight up painfully and with several teeth either gone or falling out and much blood. He told me ...well tried to....that he would file charges against me....I said name the day and time and I'll be there.
That was my last day there.

As for a humane way of finding a vein and putting them to 'sleep' gently....don't fool yourselves. I saw and heard that done too.
How do you think they do so many in one day?

Thanks Tom... but, here's my honest take on this and several petitions here:

While I'm sure it was created with good intention, this is such a poorly written petition that I'm not confident if it's worth it at all. For starters, how is signing this going to "MAKE SURE THAT THESE ANIMALS DO NOT HAVE TO DIE IN AGONY!" as stated in this petition? The "Target" is supposed to be the person or group that can change the law and where the signatures are to be sent. Currently, the target is: "HEARTSTICK KILL METHOD" Where are the signatures going if it's going anywhere at all? Is this petition just to vent about the issue or is the author going to act further and actually manage this and follow-through?

Care2 really needs to start putting tutorials and I've brought this up a few times over. I'm tired of writing to authors of petitions for good causes and with potential but unsure if it's a waste of mine and everyone else's time. Remember, if we choose to do one thing, we're choosing not to do something else... and, we all know how much work we have out there.

Sorry, I'm a little frustrated as there are several petitions like this. Its been going on for years now and is a big contributor and adds to the weight to the naysayers' claim that petitions do not work. Creating and managing petitions take time and should be taken seriously. And, before I commit my time and energy to network and sign, I want to feel confident that I'm participating in effective advocacy. I'd like to petition Care2 to start a petition tutorial but that means I'm going to choose not to do something else for the animals. Anyone want to volunteer?

I'll post back if and when I get a response from the author.

Intracardiac (intracardial??) injections. A reputable shelter won't do intracardiac injections unless the animal has already been tranquilized. So who gets this petition? Dumb SOB's who don't care anyway?

I signed but I also had a problem with the target...being that there isn't one. Funny, this is the first time I have seen so many comment on this. My comment on the "petition" was this:I'm unclear about the target. Where is this petition going? I'm clear about one thing though, this is a terrible method of euthanasia. Are Vets doing this? Please find the right target for this important issue!

My question is: who is going to receive our signatures? All the shelters...decisionmakers...WHO???
Is this petition all about "awareness"?

I love to sign and cross post as wide as possible, but only if the petition is going to person(s) who can DO something about this horrible method of killing. Usually I always send for feedback, but I am in a tremendous lack of time.
Noted with thanks

Thank you Nadia and others for all your comments. I understand and share your frustration with poorly written petitions. I am aware that petitions should have legitimate targets, and I normally avoid posting those that don't. I guess it was late and I was tired when I posted the offending petitions, and I apologize if I wasted anyone's time.

The good news is that the author of the Heart Stick petition has changed the target from "HEARTSTICK KILL METHOD" to "CONGRESSIONAL LEADERSHIP" so maybe all this attention will do some good. I also think there is positive value to the discussions and learning that can take place when any story or petition is posted. I am glad this post served as a catalyst for informative comments about heart stick euthanasia as well as about petitions.

I agree that most Care2 members who post petitions have good intentions, and I too would like to see a Care2 start a petition tutorial or petition writers' group. I think there should be a tutorial on the "start your petition" page so everyone writing a petition would be able to read it.

Nadia, I think a petition to care2 is a good idea, but don't forget you and I are both members of Care2's ThePetitionSite group. Maybe that would be a good place to start a discussion about this matter.

Will cross post Tom and put in my shares too.
Thanks for your reply.
Last year I sent over 150 feedbacks to the authors and I got some replies back, they changed their target and most of them were grateful...
