For a couple of medicines available for women (Premarin and Prempro) approaching menopause, one of the ingredients is Pregnant Mare Urine (PMU). Mares (female horses) are made to be pregnant, stay in a dirty and tiny stall for their entire pregnancy, and have a machine attached to them to collect their urine, and give birth alone with no comfort or medical help. Then soon after birth, the foal (baby horse) is taken away from it's mother and shipped off in a crowded truck, often for days on end with no food or water, to the slaughterhouse. The mare is impregnated and the cycle starts again. This is extremely unfair to the animals and cruel in every kind of way. The horses are kept from doing natural things, expecially being able to move around and get excercise. As for the medicine, there are many other options, most of which are more natural and beneficial to the person. Please help stop the killing of PMU foals and the cruelty to the PMU mares by sending a message to both of these companies:

and please also visit this website to help stop the company that creates these medicines:

Thank you!

I have created a website to promote this cause. Please go this website:

Please read it thoroughly, and leaving a comment would be appreciated! Your ideas and suggestions mean a lot to me!

Hard to believe it's the year 2011 and our so called medicine is so mid evil:(
They have other ways to deal with this without causing the suffering of our living animals.
Since when are we more important than them:(
IF you do go to your doctor for this, be sure to question him, then inform him you are animal rights and you refuse to take anything that causes cruelty to animals.
Thank Brenda and it's so great to see you back here my friend

This is just disgusting. May their suffering be visited upon all responsible for this atrocity.

I've been fighting this for over 15 years!!!! There is NO NEED for Premarin. Their answer has always been that if they shut down all the Premarin farms, there would be way too many people out of work!! Amazing what we allow to go on in this country. Thanks for bringing it back into the forefront and thanks Constance for forwarding.

This is somesthing that makes me soooo mad! I've known about this for years, do NOT take these drugs.
I could go on and on about this, give these poor horses a life to live for Goodness sake!

How selfish of people to make an animal suffer for there own want. Menopause is something a woman has to live with after a certain age. There are other alternatives! Thanks Brenda.

I think every doctor that subscribes this drug to anyone should have to show them this video first and let the patient decide if they have the guts to take it seeing what torture comes from making it!

My horse is a PMU rescue. I got him from a feedlot in Canada through the United Pegasus Foundation. He is 5 years old now, and is one of the sweetest horses I've ever known.

Thanks for posting this. It is my hope that this despicable practice, yet another example of human cruelty and greed, be halted for good. And congratulations to Chelsie on your rescue!

I would never use this for two reasons: first and foremost because of the animal cruelty involved, secondly because of the health risks. Links have been made to both heart disease and cancer. So if people are not concerned with animal welfare, advise them of the health risks. There are many natural remedies for menopause which include: magnesium, calcium, black cohosh, evening primrose oil, ginseng, red clover, lactobacillus acidophilus, vitamin E and vitamin C.

This is about the same as raising Chinese bears for their bile and subjecting them to cruel and horribly inhumane conditions simply for profit. We need to become a society that does not sacrifice animals for entertainment or for the "medicinal" use of their bodies.

I naively thought that this was banned and that synthetic hormones were taking their place. This is barbaric, needless and totally unacceptable. Thanks for spreading awareness about this - women can and hopefully will make a change.

Sadly, it's all about the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ they care absolutely nothing about the pain & suffering of the mares & babies as with vivisection and other ways (people ?) have of making money from the animals. I'm glad this helped some to learn about these horses suffering.

Every medicine containing (Premarin and Prempro) should have a label saying it comes from the suffering of mares & their babies.

No horses were harmed for me during my Menopause. I refused all offers of HRT from my doctors, took the few hot flushes when they came along and am now through the other side none the worse for wear! There are loads of other things that can be done to alleviate the symptoms of MP. Cruelty to animals must not be one of them.

Btw: This is no different from what happens to cows in the dairy industry. I wonder how many people will be willing to give up using dairy?
