Corporate America has long known that the best defense is a good offense. It's no wonder then that the healthcare industry has rallied the troops in recent weeks in anticipation of Michael Moore's newest documentary, Sicko, due out in theaters nationwide

Viewers will likely find the issues represented in the film scary, regardless of personal politics. Consider some of the following issues explored in the film:

*American health care is a for-profit business. Insurance companies, like other for-profit businesses, try to abstain from spending their money whenever possible. Have you ever been denied a claim because the procedure or treatment you needed was deemed "experimental" or "unnecessary" by the insurance company?

*Applications for health insurance are rigorously examined. Those with "pre-existing" medical conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, HIV/AIDS or cancer have a much harder time getting coverage. Medical insurance companies also known to conduct follow-up investigations, sometimes leading them to drop individuals diagnosed later with such conditions.

*The cost of prescription drugs in America is astronomically high. Countries that provide citizens with national health care also sell prescription drugs at much lower prices than pharmacies in America. One Sept. 11th volunteer who took the trip to Cuba with Moore claimed to be paying $150 a pop for respiratory inhalers at home. The same product cost the equivalent of 5 cents in Cuba!

*Pharmaceutical companies are influential. Politicians receive funding from pharmaceutical companies, which in turn helps drug companies gain political leeway and keep their prices sky-high.

*Some Americans are denied access to necessary health care, often in emergencies. Health insurance that only covers specific benefits, doctors and/or hospitals could translate to inadequate care for many. And for people who don't have health insurance at all, a medical emergency is more likely to result in extreme health consequences or financial burden.

Moore is clearly not alone in believing that health care in the United States is treated like a luxury rather than a necessity:

"Even those who have been harsh to me in the past, or who have not agreed with my politics, were moved," Moore states on his Web site.

Whether one is a fan of Moore or not, no one can argue that the health care system in America is plagued with problems that desperately call for solutions.

Stay tuned.

. If you walk out of Sicko hoping that you'll get better health care, but then do nothing, then you will have wasted the momentum created by this film. We must act now if we want change!

I pay for my own health care I find it very reasonable, at times people do need drugs frankly I think we go to a dr he writes a script because we expect it, if we where less drug dependant we would be better off as a counrty and do what Mitt Romney did in Masss, and had it privatized so it was affordable for all in Massachusetts

The U.S. Health system is as sick as Moore describes. The FDA and most of the medical establishment is controlled by the Pharmaceuticals. The system does not attempt to cure most conditions, even though cures and preventative measures are known. Instead, treatments to alleviate symptoms and provide maximum profits to doctors, pharmaceuticals are used and insurence companies typically don't cover the most effective treatments- which usually don't involve pharmaceuticals. Additionally, Health Practitioners using the most effective alternative methods are persecuted by the establishment Gov't agencies on behalf of the Pharmaceuticals.
