This is so sad - my heart goes out to the poor horses - I hope and pray that they are rescued. Maybe some of the donations from the new Giving Campaign launched by the billionaires can be directed towards this project. Is there any way of linking this idea up - letting her know that she might be able to approach them with a last ditch request!

I thoroughly agree with Susan about how wonderful it would be if those dear horses could be helped via the Giving Campaign. It really isn't too much to ask, surely! I do hope something happens SOON!!

Hi everyone, thank you for your comments. If you want to read more about the situation, you can find details in my sharebook.

These horses have been saved from their awful lives only to be forced off the land that they call home, please spread the word so this Shelter will have enough funds to continue to help these horses and to save others.

Thank you.

Hi Henriette

Sorry, I didn't realise that the BBC hadn't posted a link to The Horse Refuse's page, this is quite a stupid thing for them not to do, seeings this was supposed to be about helping the horses rather than just Katie's visit.

Thank you all for your support.

I am a pensioner but managed to send £10....if every one who read this could do the same, and Katie Price, along with other celebrities who get their photos taken with the horses and made the oooos and ahhs and how sad comments put their money where their mouths are....they would raise the money in no time at does any one else feel about what I am saying....or is it just me.....there are a lot of animals in need out there, and a lot of rich people who could help....but don't.

Tony Harrison-you are absolutely right! I, too have been trying to get along with that donation/ billing info form but have problems understanding everything. Have no PayPal account and don't intend to get one either, want to use my Visa, but am uncertain about correctly filling in the information. Perhaps somebody could help me out here?

First thought that came to my mind, "Babe, skip your precious 'photo-op.' Sell that HUGE honking ring on your finger and save the horse. Now, THERE'S a kiss with meaning." Meanwhile, dearhearted Toni shares from her pension. TONI ought to be the one photographed kissing the majestic steed. He/she/it would most certainly want to kiss her back! Thank you everyone for your support and thank you so much Toni for your donation, it must be difficult when you are on a fixed income.

I understand what you are saying Toni. I have great respect and am truly grateful for anyone who works or runs a good rescue/shelter, I would not be strong enough to see all of that heartache and suffering everyday.

People like Sara give up their lives to help animals, which allows me to feel less guilty because I know these animals are being helped, so the least I can do is help out money wise whenever I can, it is a lot less painful than what they go through everyday.

Simon Cowell Did make a sizeable donation, he also asked all of his friends to donate to The Horse Refuge instead of buying him a christmas present, which was a wonderful thing to do

Although in honesty, he could probably have bought the land for her and let her use it, I am not really sure why he didn't do that.

Sorry Angelika, I have only just read your post.

I use PayPal, but I have just looked at the form to donate via a Credit Card, the details you need to submit is your own Name, Address ect. I don't think it is there to be passed on to The Horse Refuge, I think it is probably just to confirm with your Credit Card company that the card is not being used fraudulently.

I doubt that they even pass those details on, but even if they did, Sara has had my details since April and she has never tried to contact me, she is not an organisation with mailing addresses, she is just grateful to anyone who wishes to donate.

If you want any more help Angelika, please ask and I will try and assist you. x

thanks a lot, Alison. So at least I know that it's not Sara's address wanted on that form. And since you don't mention it, I assume I could just leave off phone and email? I would not want PayPal or Visa to get that. I never made any online purchase or donation and that form is all new to me, sorry. It was NOT at all meaning distrust for Sara! I'll give it a try now and check back with you in case of problems, thanks.

I think it is actually sad how all the famous people get all the attention when not weraing fur, giving up meat or/ and dairy and donating to shelters when others work their asses off rescuing and advocating for the rights of animals and they don;t get such a huge praise. Protecting animals and fighting for their rights is a humans duty, not evenone will follow that duty through but no one is "amazing" for doing it.

Alison A (244)
Monday August 9, 2010, 11:06 am
Sorry Angelika, it was not you that thought of the distrust, it is actually me, I don't trust anyone and try to give as little information as possible.

I personally never give my phone no. out and if it refuses to go through without a phone no. I just write 000 0000 0000..... try and get me on that, lol.

I do however normally give my email, only in case there is a problem, but that is entirely up to you,

Thank you for taking time to do this Angelika, your efforts and support is much appreciated. x

I know what you mean MeowFoul, what have these people done to warrant the press, when the real work has been done by someone in the media darkness.

But Katie visiting has brought the press with her, the BBC is one of the biggest organisations in the country and they have reported on it, other newspapers have also written articles including the Daily mail which I did submit a story on, but made a mistake by putting it under Science & Tech instead of Animals, I blame it on my mouse!! Lol.

We can only hope that her visit and all of this publicity has helped the donations roll in, the above article does show that she did donate also.

Well, so how much has "Jordan" (Katie Price's working name) herself donated to Sara Ross and her horse sanctuary? Hmmm?

Sorry, I am not very impressed with this female. She lives in a very expensive, large, detached house in the country, she socializes with the wealthy and famous, she rides at equestrian events and she doesn't stint herself when it comes to clothes, jewellery and treats of various kinds. She has also spent vast amounts of money on having several lots of cosmetic surgery as well as botox treatments. According to Wikipedia, her personal fortune is: "Net worth ▲£40million+ ($66.76 million) (estimated)". The link, if you want to read about this "celeb and former glamour model" (this just means that she posed topless and also naked in various magazines and "newspapers") is:

"Worryingly, Dr Milojevich also claims that the mum-of-three could risk serious health problems, such as facial paralysis as a result of too much Botox.

He said: 'I would strongly advise her to hold off having any more treatments. In the photos it looks like Kate has had more Botox than we would recommend.

'It seems she's as though she's also had fillers in her cheeks, giving her what we call the plumped 'pillow-face' look.'

Jordan has never made a secret of her obsession with plastic surgery and has had five boob jobs, a nose job, porcelain veneers on her teeth as well as liposuction on her tum and legs."

Jordan Katie Price is wealthy, self-indulgent and vacuous. In view of the fact that her personal fortune is estimated at over £40 million, she could very well afford to BUY THIS LAND OUTRIGHT herself and DONATE it to Ms Sara Ross!

Alison A (244)
Tuesday August 10, 2010, 1:33 pm
Hi Anna

I do understand what you are saying, but in fairness, if Katie gave £600,000 worth of land whenever anyone needed it, she would go broke very quickly and like you mentioned, she is a mother of three and I am certain that she wants to make enough money to ensure that their future is taken care of.

To most of our standards, she does squander money, but is her 'treats' up for debate any more than ours are? Can anyone say that they don't indulge themselves or their kids with things that they definitely could do without?

Katie has used her fame and the press to promote Sara's cause, I am not saying that she has not benefited from it herself, but she has pushed this plea into the spotlight, which is more than any of us can do, so I do not feel that she should be condemned for that. It is more than any other celebrity is doing for Sara and these horses at the moment.

I would love a celebrity to come along and buy this land as an investment so Sara could stay there, would that be a nice thing for Katie to do? Yes, is it something that Katie could sustain when approached by all charities in need? No!

Sara has now put a very sad letter on her website, I feel awful about this as there is nothing I can do.

Letter from the founder of the Horse Refuge, Sara Ross
Wednesday, 11 August 2010 16:21

Dear friends, horse lovers, kind people,

I would like to thank each and every one of you for your incredible support, in particular the many people who have telephoned, written and visited us at this very stressful time - it has really helped. A special thanks to Katie Price, who you will know, visited us on Thursday, 5 August 2010 and made a public appeal for the sanctuary and for the gifts.

Despite our shouting and screaming for over a year, the eviction process is well under way and I am trying to find safe places for our animals. The problem is, as all of you who visit know, the horses here are all special needs and not able to be re-homed safely. I have homed as many as I can. Many of them have had such severe abuse that if taken from their comfort zone and their social groups would become scared and then aggressive. Horses as you probably know form very strong relationships with each other and it is I believe cruel to remove them from their social groups. How would you feel if forced apart from those you hold dear? In any event it would be completely wrong of me to put even one person in danger. They all look so happy and content here but I know to my cost that they are not when moved from their own environment. Others who happily wander round their field cannot travel far because their poor arthritic limbs would not manage balancing in a lorry. Some cannot go out in daylight due to eyesight problems. Four of them need to be checked regularly, even throughout the night, as they have narcolepsy and fall down - sometimes in a position where they cannot get up on their own! One gets colic every time he gets stressed, many are rigs and cannot go near mares. So it goes on ... Sadly, when we move, as we will no doubt have to, we will lose at least a dozen of these dear creatures who are too sick and old to be moved. This is a tragedy as if we had been able to stay they could have lived out a few more wonderful years at the Horse Refuge.

Although we have always been a charitable organisation, we are currently applying for registration with the Charities Commission - we only recently qualified as such as we have until recently been under the required donations threshold for registration. To date, we had been privately funded (we sold everything including our house and all but our essential possessions to be able to keep supporting the rescued animals).

There is a sense or irony in all this - in March we won an award for being the Best Horse and Shire Sanctuary and here we are in August facing eviction!

Finally it is with great sadness that I have to tell you that our beloved Duke lost his long battle. It is still too painful to talk about and he is deeply missed by everyone here but I am certain his spirit is still with us.

Please come and see us all while we are still here - there are horses of all sizes to see from Shetland to Shires!

Thank you once again for your support - I truly believe with all of you behind us we can win through.

Yours with great affection,
Sara xx

Absolutely tragic! Those poor, poor horses; old, ill, traumatized and abused . . .
And I feel for Sara too, their guardian, who has dedicated her life to this cause.

Alison - I disagree. Jordan, aka Katie Price, could very well afford to buy this property for Sara and her horses. Even if she did not want to gift Sara with it, she could quite well afford to allow Sara to live there with her rescued horses. (Land and property, especially here in the UK, is always a very good investment!) Just how much money does one woman with three children need? I think £40+ million is quite excessive. She can easily safeguard her children's future on, say £30 million, and even so, she certainly wouldn't be stinting the little dears.

I do not have any children, and I rarely indulge myself. I am a lifelong non-smoker, do not take recreational drugs, drink very little alcohol, do not have a car (or a driving licence), do not buy new furniture, new carpets, new curtains etc, I do not buy cosmetics or jewellery or expensive apparel - certainly I wouldn't dream of wasting £100 000 or more on numerous rounds of cosmetic surgery, botox injections, veneer for my front teeth etc, let alone designer clothing and accessories etc etc etc.

Quite a few people who are really quite hard up give small amounts to various charities (many here on Care2 give, say $5 or $10, to a great many different appeals for help with various causes - money that some of them can ill afford to give). Yet people like Jordan Katie - or indeed, Bonny Prince Charlie, or Paul McCartney - who are very wealthy indeed by most people's standards rarely, if ever, give any money away at all. (Before you ask: yes, I do give money to some charitable causes, and no, I am not at all well off.)

Alison A (244)
Saturday August 14, 2010, 1:24 pm
Hi Anna

You sound very angry and although I am deeply upset about it all, I do not expect Katie to bail Sara out.

Sara wrote to Katie and asked her to visit the Refuge, Katie responded and got some well needed publicity for Sara's cause.

If Katie would have ignored Sara's plea, no one would have even known, yet Katie took time to visit, the reporters followed her and hopefully Sara has benefited from it.

I know you might say that Katie did it for her own publicity, well, maybe she did, but it was much more important to Sara, so I am happy about that.

I would love it if someone bought the land for Sara to stay on, but many celebs know about this plea, some have much more money than Katie Price, but have still not come up with the goods.

This is tragic and if I had a spare £600,000, I would have given it, but I haven't, I also haven't got the rights to tell others how they spend their money, I am just grateful that they have given what they have and I know Sara is too.

Alison A (244)

I visited Sara at the Horse Refuge yesterday, it was the first time I had ever met or spoken to her, she is a really lovely lady with so much care and passion for all of these horses and animals which she has saved over the years.

She showed me around, some of her horses are blind, I see the horse (the one tied to the gate) whose picture is on the front page of her website, this horse looks fantastic now, a glossy coat and full of life.

She was telling me about all of her horses, they all would have been denied life if Sara hadn't of taken them in and nursed them to health.

She lost here beloved Duke, which is the other horse on her front page and on my profile, she couldn't talk about him, she was so upset.

She actually had an offer to buy the land which turned out to be a hoax, she was so upset as she didn't understand what she had done to deserve that, she had to pin her hopes on that, especially as she is in court today to be given her eviction date.

She still needs all the help she can get, I gave her another donation which made her cry, but I cannot give anywhere near what she needs, but thousands of people together could. Please spread Sara's plea around, these horses cannot survive without your help.

P.S. I still don't know what this Giving Campaign is, if this is something that can help, could someone please provide me a link as I have searched, but there are so many things that come up, I am not sure what one Sue and Susan are referring to.
