Yesterday," reads the e-mail from Allen, a Marine in Afghanistan, "I gave blood because a Marine, while out on patrol, stepped on a [mine's] pressure plate and lost both legs."

Noted and thanks. It is clearly time to bring our brave warriors home. No man or woman should go through this.

I watched Chris Mathews on Hardball today. The subject was, "Why are we in Afghanistan?" Both talking heads, one Republican and one Democrat, and Mathews all agreed that nobody knows why we are there, what "winning" would look like, that we are not wanted there, that we can't win a ground war there, that the French and Russians lost and we should just get the hell out of there now. Osama bin Laden isn't there anymore, so that reason has passed it's sell date long ago. Mathews called it another Vietnam and the others agreed. We should declare victory and support our troops by bringing them home.

Wasn't August one of the highest casualty months for our soldiers in Afghanistan? It breaks my heart what they are having to go through, as are their families and friends. It is way overdue for us to leave this place! My sympathies and prayers go out to all the families who have lost loved ones here or in Iraq; as well as to all the soldiers who have lost their lives, been injured or are still in this hellish place.

I have lost count of the reasons we have been given in the UK for our invasion and occupation of Afghanistan. Now it is to keep the streets of London safe - as if terrorism couldn't be organised anywhere. The only recent terrorist attack here was seemingly perpetrated by people from Leeds, England. Initially we were told it was to revenge 9/11 because Osama bin Laden was in Afghanistan - as if that was the fault of the Afghani people! The Afghanis have been fighting against occupiers for as long as they can remember. I am sure they would be quite happy to get on with their own lives if only the super powers of this world would give them the chance. Ordinary soldiers are just cannon-fodder and have always been and ordinary Afghanis don't matter to anyone but themselves.

how long would it take al-queda/taliban to regroup in afghanastan and mount even more and bigger terrorist attacks on mainland U.S?? i would rather see al-queda/taliban in caves trying to defend themselves from U.S (and alliance)drones/troops ...a good offense in better than a good defense in this situation and we have not been attacked in 8 years.....dont forget they(al-queda) started this from bases in afghanastan and supported by the taliban...what is a country to do? write a nice letter to al-queda??

The AP ran a photo of a Marine attacked in Afghanistan. The Pentagon isn't pleased.
