LLINGS - After a 31-year wait, the U.S. Department of Interior said Tuesday it will not recognize Montana's Little Shell Tribe, a group of landless Indians who have struggled to stay together through more than a century of poverty and dislocation

We have plenty of money and recognition for the corrupt banks and Wall Street, but we cannot recognize America's First People. Hardly anyone in this country is full blooded anything today. However, these people have struggled and been denied rights for over a century. Those with any ancestral blood of this tribe should be recognized.

I do not live in The USA so I don't really have much right into telling the American Government what to do and what not to do. But I do think I have a right to voice my opinion and that is that I see in every country the same thing happening to their Original Inhabitants. They're the ones that get rejected for whatever reason and whereas most Indians get accepted I think this tribe should get accepted as well! Why should a small tribe of people have to roam around the USA, who fought against slavery, and have nowhere to live? It's WRONG. It's wrong to treat any aboriginal like that as that is what the Indians of the USA are. They're the aboriginals of Amrica and Canada. Not just the USA, and as far as I know from my studies of the original inhabitants they've ALL been treated like DIRT! Please America see some sense and give this tribe what they are entitled to Land and somewhere to live. Give them their right to live in the USA. I was always taught that the USA was a pleasant country where all people get accepted. But it seems we were taught WRONG!

Let's see... Our government took their land, set them adrift to wander and survive as they can for three decades, and now deny them a home because they have no history of home. Yep, sounds like America.

If that's America I'm glad I don't live there Shevlin, mind you I think the treatment of ALL Aboriginals, be it in America or Australia is terrible. Yes even here in Australia they do get treated like Dirt at times but at least they also get help and what money they do get they spend on Alcohol, and who introduced them to that? Yes the White Man! So our ancestors have a lot to answer for not only in America but here in Australia as well, but at least here they have somewhere to live as far as I know. So please don't quote me on that one as some still live in squalors

"... the Little Shell had failed to show enough "cohesion"
!!!!WHAT!!!
Do they mean that after all the wars waged on them, so many were EXTERMINATED that the US Gov. no longer has an obligation to set things right?!!!
WRONG!

Well, first I'd say that I was hoping we were going to start turning around the corruption and incompetence, but it does take time and I'm trying not to be impatient. It would be great if we could do the right things right just as a matter of course. As an American, this makes me unhappy and elected people will be hearing from me (again).
The one thing I would say to other unhappy Americans is that the 'government' is US. We the people, of and for and by the people - that's us and it's our power and prerogative until we surrender it to others (which we did and do too often).
We can change this any time we want to. So, who's up for some letter and email writing, some website form filling in, and some phone calls? I AM!!

The BIA has never-EVER-had the good of Native Peoples in their minds/hearts...They "doled out" ROTTEN BEEF and WEEVILY FLOUR that was MOLDY in the 1800s.The invader/killer/conquorers who TOOK THIS LAND FROM THE REAL OWNERS brought "PLAGUE BLANKETS" and "WHITE EYE RELIGION" along with "THE CARLISLE SCHOOLS" to ERASE THE PEOPLE OF TURTLE ISLAND..WE know OUR OWN!!!!Stand Strong Little Shell-You Know YOUR ROOTS-You DO NOT NEED WHITE GOVERNMENT to JUSTIFY YOUR HERITAGE..........

Being an North American Indian I know how hard it is for the Little Shell Tribe to go through this at this time. After so many years of trying to get the government to be responsible for something their people did that was wrong, it is hard for the government in place now to accept this and make things right because of the SHAME it will bring upon them. So what they do is become more try to ignore the problem, but what they don't realize is how much more stupid it makes them look, and how untrust worthy they are. I just think about how their History of racism keeps coming forward into the present. They have to start and think about, that the First People of North America have never been conquered and the treaties say we are Allies, and with that shouldn't we be give some respect and equality all way round. I could go on and on but it's anger that is starting to flow through my fingers so I'll quit for now

Actually Chris, I think that everyone should stand up for those that are ill treated and ignored regardless of where people live. As the Native Americans should know whether or not they are a tribe, it isn't up to the government to decide. I object to the government telling them that they are not recognised.

Thank you for answering to my letter. As for the discrimination to the Indians in America don't worry you are not alone. The Aboriginees here in Australia are in the same boat. But at least they got a SORRY from our Prime Minister Kevin Rudd when he came into Office. This however was for the stolen children affair but at least it was a start. However, there is still a discrimination against them as on all the forms we have to fill in, be it for schooltrips or government inquiries it always says ARE YOU FROM ABORIGINAL OR TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER DECENT, if that is no discrimination than my name isn't Agnes Hall from England. Eventhough I live in Australia! To the Red Indians I can onky say this DON"T GIVE UP and FIGHT FOR YOUR BIRTHRIGHT! Did I live in North America I think I wouldn't fight for my own right as I suffer from Chronic Depression and get discriminated even in my own family who CAN"T see this as I sometimes do things I can't remember. Yes it's hard to be in the minority whatever the reason, but we were talking about the Indians! You have my following in whatever you choose to do to help this small tribe to get their right after all it was the White Man who took your land. Unfortunately the Dutch and English were the first countries to start taking your land. Being born in Holland and then living in England from my 21st birthday I'm not proud of what my people have done to you!
Thank you to the lady who was so kind to give me a green star as I only said what I believed in just like now, I don't think I deserved it but was pleased to get it anyway. I think Allen Bunn deserved that star more than me! Allen if I can do it I would like to send you a green start for standing up for your brothers. The Little Shell Tribe and I wish all the Native Americans all the best of luck.

I wish I could follow your initiative in letter writing and E-Mailing to the government. I WILL do anything I ccan to help Jenny Lynn just let me know what I can do from Australia as I can't think of anything that the US government would take notice of from someone who lives right across the Atlantic at the other side of the world. I keep looking in CARE 2 and as soon as I see something I'll take action, however what would the government do if they hear from a nutter as that is what most people call you if you suffer from Chronic Depression!

It was one of the greatest crimes against humanity when the European settles first invaded the Americas and Australian continents. Not only was there theft of land involved but barbaric acts of genocide that included women and children. It saddens me that our Governments still can't get it right....it's no wonder that we have become another statistic of the falling empire syndrome....perhaps our past has finally caught up with us.

Because my ancestors hid their ancestory during the trail of tears, I can't prove my cherokee heritage and can't be accepted officially into the tribe.

Give it up people! We are all AMERICANS first and formost.
Learn to Adapt, Improvise and Overcome. Stop being a Victim.
It seems that just about everybody nowdays wants some type of special recognition or status, because with it comes government freebees. Wallowing in sorrow and self pity wont pay the bills. Be proud of who you are and what you are. If your wagon is stuck in the mud,get down and push it out, dont wait for someone else to do it for you.

and the BROKEN TREATIES-CARLISLE SCHOOLS-NATIVE CHILDREN "RIPPED" FROM FAMILIES TO HAVE THEIR HAIR CUT AND NOT BE ALLOWED TO SPEAK THEIR LANGUAGE-TREATY HELD LANDS THAT THE U.S. GOVERNMENT "LOANED" for grazing to "white settlers" who JUST KEPT IT FOR THE LAST 300 YEARS...TRIBAL MINERAL RIGHTS that have been FOUGHT OVER for years and MONIES ARE GOING TO GOVERNMENT AND NOT THE "RIGHTFUL" OWNERS...

Pam......I fully understand your rage. However, there are thousands
if not millions who empathize with your feelings & I'm one of them.

If possible I'd give it all back to all the Indian tribes there are.
It is not possible though. None of us living ordinary run of the
mill lives can be held responsible for what our great somebody
did whether they were generals or peasants.

There are many means & avenues to an eventual peaceful resolution............
.And, it will come without riots & rampage as others have done & gotten with.
I know it it has been a very long wait.

Campaign dilligently in a peaceful mode..........For if you do the respect for
all your suffering will be better understood than any other tactic.

But, let me remind you not to copycat other violent behaviors as was done
in the past.................Patience & Perserverence is the key to unlocking doors.

Plant & protect trees for life........................

AHhhhh-You MIS-UNDERSTAND.....It IS not about rage....IT IS ABOUT "over 3000+ TREATIES" STATING "THE LAND WILL BE HELD-in trust-FOR THE RIGHTFUL OWNERS-AS LONG AS FATHER SUN SHINES-AS LONG AS THE RIVERS FLOW"-BY THE "white eyes government".....Little Shell Band has a right to land under treaty/law....TREATIES and LAWS WHICH have never been and will never be honored!!!Tho I DO GET REALLY SICK OF FOLKS WHO HAVE READ "HISTORY"[written by the invaders] and WHO THINK THEY KNOW ABOUT "INDIANS"...YOUR WHITE HOLIDAY of THANKSGIVING was the FIRST WELFARE LINE and HOW DID THE SETTLERS REPAY THE KINDNESS?They just TOOK MORE LAND AND KILLED THE RIGHTFUL OWNERS...You can RESPECT ME ALL DAY BUT IN THE END MY ANCESTORS STILL OWNED THE LAND YOU "SQUAT" ON!!!!!

Indeed I did forget about the treaties in my reply. I agree they might never be honored.

But, still in this era of need & want you will get back what is yours. And, by all
means be careful of those who will want to join your crusade to benefit themselves alone.
These people are just biding their time to throw out bait to persuade you to accept
their help. Avoid these charlatans...............

Plant & preserve trees for life.............

History is important because the way we live today is a result of all that has happened in the past. It's important to recognize the mistakes made by our ancestors. We have taken the wrong path and had plenty of chances to do something about it but chose not to. White man, in his own arrogance sometimes forgets that his laws are no match for Mother Natures laws. Every now and then she will put her foot down and re-balance the chaos we create.
