How many such conflicts could be avoided by the authorities meeting the protesters halfway? How many lives could be saved by taking into consideration demands which are probably not unreasonable? After all, people don't risk their lives taking their protest to the streets for no reason--one imagines that they not only had good reasons but some reasonable expectation that protest might invite negotiation rather than bullets. What would be wrong with using reason rather than force when dealing with desperate people--and with doing so before they become so desperate? What harm in listening?

I have friends, both Japanese and Thai, in Bangkok, and I'm really worried.

Deborah, the government has met the protesters halfway, but then the Red Shirts increased their demands. They have brought this development upon theirt own heads. No government in the world could have tolerated the disruption that has paralysed Bangkok. It must be cleaned up, cleared of agitators, so that normal business may be resumed.

This has been such a puzzling situation for me. I guess I thought of Thailand, especially Bangkok as being a very civilized and industrialized nation. Those I know who have been there tell of its beauty, but also how much of a tourist attraction it is also. I find it difficult to fathom a place that civilized is all of a sudden fighting a Civil War in the heart of a country that is more 1st World not 3rd world! What is up with people's heads??? Is there not enough violence, lives being lost, families being torn apart by floods, drought, hurricanes, fires, tornado's, tsunami's, just to name a few of Mother Natures havoc, along with the middle east wars, family violence, and all of those walking into schools, churches, and other public places killing people for no good reason?? Wake up Bangkok! This crap is ridiculous. I just don't understand why they feel the need to kill one another. This world has definitely went to hell in a hand basket, and it just gets deeper in violence each day.
