The three-year-old girl had been taken by her grandmother to visit in Sachsenburg, when the Staffordshire bull terriers suddenly turned on her. Some reports suggest the dogs attacked as soon as the older woman and child entered the house, which they

Those who share their lives with dogs need to remember that a dog isn't just a cuddly playmate. He's also an animal whose instincts can cause him to attack humans for reasons perfectly understandable to the dog. And while a toy poodle, say, will on average do little physical damage the larger and more powerful breeds can and do kill and maim severely.

And it's never the dog's fault. Human guardians of pets have to be responsible and ensure that their dogs are not trained to be aggressive and are not left in positions where a child may be injured or killed.

right at this moment i'm about to walk a lovely staff female named coco. i love this dog, but in the recesses of my heart i know that staff's, presa's and pit bulls should not exist.

I frankly think that no 'breed' should exist. Mixed-breed dogs (and cats) tend to be healthier, on average, than those deliberately bred for certain characteristics. And considering how many wonderful and loving animals are euthanized in shelters every day for the 'crime' of being unwanted, I can't understand why we allow the deliberate breeding of pets.

I don't care about the shape of my cats' noses or the color of their fur - I just enjoy having them with me to love. They're perfect as they are.

How many more children must die before pet owners wake up and realize you do not leave small children alone with an animal. In this case if the owner of the dogs was in the garden and the visitors came in without notice perhaps they were being protective. Such a heartbreaking story for all concerned.

Dogs alone act very differently from 2 or 3 dogs. The owner is fully to blame for this, for not taking precautions - -

So sad for this poor child! Something must of set these dogs off for them to instantly attack this child! God only knows! However the owner did right to end the dogs lives when an innocent child losses its life because of such vicious attacks. But why did grandmother walk in the house with the child while owner was outdoors in garden, makes me question the grandmothers logical judgment! If she knew that there was 3 big dogs in the house or not, the story did not say! Overall tragic all around for all 4 lives taken away! This could/should of been avoided!

Sorry and sad, BUT dogs do defend their territory and these people were strangers even though they were family. The owner was not in the house, so you can't blame the dogs. My friend has a Dobie and you would not catch me entering her home unless she or her family was there to hold the dog back.

I agree with Blacktiger P. they entered the house without the owner present. Not something I would do if I knew large dogs lived there. You have to have some common sense about animals. The grandmother made a huge mistake and it cost her her grandbaby's life. Very tragic and terribly sad for all involved. My thoughts and prayers go out to all involved. Ty, Lone

I also agree with Jane Way, dogs are pack animals and are more aggressive as a group than one alone. This also could have made a huge difference in the outcome. I pray that the grandmother recovers both physically and emotionally from this tragedy.....
