The majestic Antarctic mainstays that captured the public’s imagination have suffered a ‘catastrophic’ blow to their livelihoods. According to researchers, the emperor penguins that once populated the frigid continent by the tens of thousands recently had their chick population decimated to almost nothing in one key region. If this troubling trend continues, these unique ice-dwelling pilgrims could face extinction.

Satellite images have confirmed that Cape Hope’s Halley Bay colony—the second biggest collection of emperor penguins in the world—has lost almost all emperors aged three or under. These penguins rely on large patches of sea ice as habitats for themselves and their young chicks. In the past three years, however, abnormally warm temperatures and subsequent storms have destroyed the ice, shrinking these animals’ critical homes in the process. Such stressors very likely played a significant role in what one scientist characterized as an “unprecedented” and “complete failure to breed successfully.”

Scientists warn that by 2100, the entire population of emperor penguins will have shrunk by at least 70 percent. The US has long considered adding these birds to its endangered species list, and global experts continually recommend the penguins’ addition to the “Red List” of international endangered species. Meanwhile, these at-risk animals remain vulnerable on the front lines of climate change.

Wait, wouldn't a nature conservation organisation do this anyway? Think you're preaching to the choir, mate.
