Care2 Trolls Must Go - Take Action

Society & Culture  (tags: social media, care2, activists, trolls )

- 3126 days ago -
While we would like to extend our gratitude and praise for the wonderful, activist community you have created with the Care2 website and all the tangential functions it encompasses we are also extremely dismayed by the onslaught of marketing trolls.

We hate spam. We do not sell or share the email addresses you provide.

I, and several others, on MANY occasions, have suggested that new members meet certain requirements (length of membership, butterflies, avatar, completed profile, number of friends, etc.) before being permitted to submit or comment on news, or in groups.

Thanks Michelle I gladly signed. I am one of those who has suggested several times to Care2 to require photos and set a number of butterflies needed before members could post anything. In fact, I just posted about this in the Feedback & Suggestions group a few minutes ago. The only people this would hurt is spammers so why not do it?

Tuesday August 31, 2010, 8:46 pm
I don't think that new members would be likely to stay around if they aren't allowed to submit comments from the beginning. Since they'd probably get somewhat frustrated over not being able to contribute and wouldn't make any friends (since they wouldn't be 'meeting' anyone if they couldn't post comments and chat with others).

I really dislike the commercial spammers and report them whenever I see them. But I'm not sure there's any practical way to keep them off the forum entirely.

Tuesday August 31, 2010, 8:46 pm
I did get it to come up so I signed it. I too am tired of trolls popping in and running there mouth. Thanks all.

. (0)
Tuesday August 31, 2010, 8:50 pm
Although maybe Care2 might consider something like an additional 'report' button specifically for commercial spam - that would instantly remove it from anyone's sight (rather than reporting something then waiting for Care2 to be able to take care of it.) Some people might abuse the button and zap things that weren't spam - but if there were suspension penalties for doing that I doubt many would abuse it. And if spammers learned that their posts were being deleted almost as soon as they posted them on the forum (since a lot of people report them quickly) they might be less likely to post them at all.

Sylvie M (46)
Tuesday August 31, 2010, 8:50 pm
Same for me, Laura H. I managed to report on only ONE message but I couldn't repeat the same action for any other similar msg in other threads.
ALL forums and similar meeting places have filters, I guess it's time to re-inforce yours, my dear C2...

I have tried to flag them and it never works. I hate them. These are serious issues that we are discussing and I think it is insulting. If they want to advertise then let them buy ad space on care2 and support the cause.

Actually, flagging does work (at least sometimes, I don't know about all the time) - I've often seen that Care2 has removed comments or has banned the spammer members after I've flagged them (I LOVE flagging spam). Unfortunately Eric is really overworked from what I hear and things can't always be deleted as quickly as we'd like.

One way that Eric's said is best to report the spammers is to go to their profile page (if they have one, and some don't) and go down to the bottom and click on 'report as inappropriate'. That way you're reporting the person himself rather than just one comment or one news item and hopefully C2 can get them off more quickly.

Lindsey I see you're contributing helpful info, and showing kindness to Eic, but the Flag buttom to report spam has not been working for a long time, and the frequency huge detailed spam posts is totally out of hand.

Moreover the situation is an open invitation to malicious hacks who could seize upon the opportunity to post hotlinks that download virus bots.

Sometimes lately the flag button doesn't work I know but I have still been able to report some of them some of the time. So it's always worth a try - it may work at any given time or it may not. Seems to be very inconsistent right now (and it irritates me not to be able to report the miserable spammers instantly.) And I hope no one is clicking on those spammers' links, viruses or not. I'd hate for them to be rewarded for their bad behavior.

I hope C2 is able to quickly fix whatever glitch is causing the inconsistency in flagging.

Thanks for starting this petition Michelle. I totally agree how frustrating it is to see these marketing trolls come up in the comments. I hope that your petition is successful.

Yes, free, hurry, our supplies are limited because Glenn, Sarah and Barack only agreed to autograph for 3 days because they suffer cramps. Noted and signed. I get tired of these "trolls" many who hide behind a "nothing" profile, and only come on to cause discord and hate. Most seem to be from the right wing type, or radical republicans. They never truly add anything positive, so I think it would be a good idea that there be some sort of rules before people could add comments or do polls. At least it would show those who truly CARE about others, the enviornmet, anilmals, etc.........and not just here to disrupt.

Sounds like a lot of you are having a lot of fun with this. . . especially the know-it poet? The mystery of this world of ' spam ' and other such delicacies goes straight over my head, I'm afraid, as emails and basics are all I can manage - hence no photo, hence if you make it too difficult for a non-competent-computer-user like me to participate, I will be done for!! All we need is for whoever runs this site - if there is a ' someone '? - to skim through occasionally and remove the obvious?

When shopping sites we wish to see,
There's ebay, and there's QVC ;
We have no time to stop and stare
At shopping lists that shouldn't be there.
So bugger off and sell your ware
On other sites - but not on Care!

They are not trolls, btw, but spammers, a very different thing.

I would think it likely that Care2 focuses on removing the profiles that post the spam, and cleaning up the spam afterwards. It makes sense to do it that way.

So flagging the profile, which might have posted a ton of spam in different threads, gets to the root of the problem much faster than flagging the spam. Of course doing both is even better, but there is still a problem with flagging spam comments here, for some reason.

Lindsey explained in her post how to flag the profile. You may think it's too much trouble, but if you want to get rid of spammers fast, it's worth it. If you find the profile is gone, then you'll know that Eric got there before you. :-)

There is a post in this thread that explains it, with screenshots.

I changed the name of the petition to Care2 Spammers Must Go since some of you have called me out on the difference between spammers and trolls. I prefer to think of them as marketing trolls - spammers is too nice a word for them. Just a note by the way, I changed the name about 5 times, saved it each time and it still shows up as Trolls. Ah well, one issue at a time I guess.

There really isn’t a perfect way to stop “S…” I won’t use the word because it makes me hungry. As when I was a kid I used to love those types of sandwiches slobbered with mustard. #1 You could try to block the “S…… IP address or domain, but then you run the risk of blocking all traffic from those sites. #2 you, could just close down their profile for breaking the rules, and then if they wished they would just open up another one using a different alias. #3 But first, how do we know that these varmints are even human? There are such things as “S…bots” you know. So, in reality there are only two realistic measures which can be taken, one would be to use a “Captcha” before posting on every comment. Or two have some employees delete “all meaty bogus profiles,” and marketing posts from the website you want to protect, from the baddies and their tiny robots from hell.

Note: A lot of websites are dealing with this problem, and stopping it is almost like trying to hold water in your hands, eventually some will get through.

And yes, I have a weakness for Spam sandwiches!

I had a new member who tried to scam me, beware of Monica Y ( Yak ). I reported it and hopefully Care2 will remove her as a member, I have a feeling she only joined to have access to names and perhaps when she went to my page on Care2 she thought she could scam me because I am a senior and would fall for it. I was born but it wasn't yesterday.

Thanks and noted with comment. As stated, marketing spammers are on the rise and disrupting normal communications. Also the animal pet foods advertised on this site have a high recall rate and have cause serious injuries to pets. It seems every sense one company purchased the majority of top bran names their quality is below normal standards even to the point their products may harm your pets. If this site success relies on the advertisements that harm our loving pets then perhaps the usefulness of this site has ended.

One idea: Maybe we could all go to the websites of the spammers (listed in their posts), cllick on the "contact us" section of their website, and then tell them to STOP the spam and that we wouldn't even consider buying any products from companies like them who would use a website like Care2 to spam people.

Just an idea . . .

Whenever I have clicked on these advertising "commenters", it says the profile can't be found....I did also receive a forwarded anti-Obama letter in my personal Care2 inbox, in response to a comment I had made. I could not find a profile for that person either.

Brilliant! Thank you SO much for creating this petition. I too have had discussions with other members, have attempted to flag these spammers, have written to Care2... all to no avail. What a great idea to have Care2-ers unite! Oooh... I nearly missed Fred H.'s comment. I'll have to check that out. Keep fighting the good fight!

Noted, signed and shared. I agree and have been trying to flag as inappropriate but it usually hasn't worked. Thanks so much for the petition and I don't agree about not letting new people not participate. I hate to penalize the many for the misguided actions of the few. I know I'm not the only technosaurus here and the warm welcome I received when I joined reinforced my desire to be here. I love my Care2 family!

*You cannot currently send a star to Lindsey because you have done so within the last week. *
Lindsey has a good idea. Make a button to zap 'em in an instant. Likely, the argument against it will be, "What if someone says something you don't like...You can zap them." I'd like to think none of the fine people I've met here would ever do that. Nor would anyone ever be a spam sucka.
Also, going to the spammers home page to report is a good idea. I have tried the "flag as inappropriate" button many times, but it has only worked once.
I will miss the ad about finding happiness...I DID. Who knew the overwhelming joy one can have by getting a $16 Ed Hardy bikini. Pure bliss.

Signed. The "not appropriate" works only sometimes. There seem to have been many of these spams in the last week. Care2 must stop them as they ARE not appropriate. If someone wants to sell something, they should buy an add.

Fred Hoekstra (6772)
Wednesday September 1, 2010, 6:03 pm

You are absolutely right! In fact. Care2 has been working on this since the Pay to View Online Sports Channel Ads and before the first Onslaught of the Pharmacy Ads.

Fred Hoekstra (6772)
Wednesday September 1, 2010, 6:09 pm

The Not Appropriate ALWAYS works, however Care2 Doesn't get back to us to tell us what they did regarding their Actions once the Ad and the Profile has been Flagged. However, I know that every time I have Flagged a Spammer, the Ads and the Spammer have been Removed from Care2.

SPAM showing up in news links & articles

Fred Hoekstra (6772)
Wednesday September 1, 2010, 6:24 pm

After Flagging the Advertisement and Copying and Pasting the Link to the Advertisement, or the Sharebook and Pasting it when I Flag the Profile, I usually leave a Comment asking Folks not to Note the Advertisement, or to Follow the Link to the Website. I do this because some people have been Noting the Spam. Then later that day, or the next day when I check the Sent file, I see that both the Advertisements and the Spammer are gone. See what I mean?

The spammers compromise the integrity of CNN. I also have tried to report inappropriate postings and like Laura H have been told there is a problem and to try later.
On the petition site, my 'personal comment to add weight to my signature' is not accepted either, only the signature - and no, it wasn't a rude comment!

Lots of great points here. I never thought of going to the profile page, if there is one, and reporting there but that makes total sense! I would love to see all trolls gone, commercial or not. However, that would take matching IP's with where the profile says they are from. I'm sure some sophisticated programming somewhere could do this, at least I would think they could but I have no idea about cost or technical detail. However I see we are dealing with two subjects here. Trolls and commercial spammers. I am glad to see other people here that had problems reporting spam from the thread. Thanks Michellle!

And, Han? Why would you think posting commercial spam here would enhance your company's ability to do business with us?

I can guarantee that I'll never go to '' - BECAUSE you chose deliberately to annoy everyone here by posting spam about that company here on our forum. You're losing potential customers for the business - not gaining them.

Unfortunately globalshopping doesn't seem to have any way that I can discern to contact them. But there's another spammer right now on the forum promoting a dating site.

And anyone is free to send messages to them through their system at:

I intend to tell them all about my cat, Molly's, current problems with struvite crystals in her urine. Such a fascinating subject.

Like so many others I've been trying to 'flag as inappropriate' every time I've seen the electronic woodworm - and never once before today got my report accepted. I've even tried emailing Care2 about it and that has sunk without trace - not even a copy to my machine - which made me start to wonder.

Then I saw one of the spam-happy darlings had even had the nerve to infest these posts - so I did as Lindsey DTSW (I think it was) suggested and tried to go to their page - I've tried this before and got something on the lines of 'Care2 cannot find this page at the moment, but look at pictures of our lovely caring members....' . I tried this again, and got the 'Care2 cannot find...' etc. Which makes me wonder further... Then I tried the 'flag as inappropriate' button, this never once having worked in the past - and it worked! Most appropriate timing!

Most odd though that their homepages can never be found. Any suggestions anyone??

Thursday September 2, 2010, 8:53 am
Sorry, it does not appear that is a valid domain or IP. This other one is Actually the people doing these worthless posts are all over the net, and are not reputable business persons! They are just dummies with no sense of business ethics whatsoever! Usually, when they see that no one is biting from a targeted website, they stop their posts. But if they "see that they are getting hits," yes, they have software that lets them know from where their traffic is coming from. So the best thing is to not go to their websites, because if you go there, they will think people are interested in the junk they are offering, and keep on posting!

Thursday September 2, 2010, 9:03 am
By the way, be careful! As some of these places may be infected with Viruses and some very nasty Spyware. Since these people are willing to spam, they are often havens for Spyware also!

the spamming on here has gone insane!!! It is WAY to easy for them to set up a new account again once they've been kicked off, too---literally in one day a person left spam on a story i'd posted, they were "removed" from Care2 and had set up a new account and left the exact same spam again on the same story---same day---same person (similar username).

Beware of going to the sites these spammers promote for any reason at all, even to make negative comments. That is most unwise.

Driving traffic to the sites is the reason they are here, and the sites are likely unsafe anyway.

There has been a problem with reporting spam because the system, understandably, was overloaded. But flagging profiles does work.
They are working hard to remove the spammers and will doubtless deal with the spam later.

And as you can see from the thread about this in the Care2 group, they were dealing with more serious things yesterday, when a plane crashed into the lake very close to their offices. Three people died in that accident. :-(

Here's a 'clickable' link to the thread about this in the Care2 group.

I must admit I Googled this "Aoomall" creature and finally got a contact email, and sent he/she/it a VERY, VERY blue message which certainly can't be repeated here. But I agree: NEVER click on any spam link; this sends a dinner bell through the whole damn spamming community and you instantly get TONS MORE SPAM! I learned this the hard way. These discussion threads comprise serious intellectual/emotional offerings & exchanges, and these hairy, warty little trolls come stomping in uninvited, ignoring all tone and context, and start belching out prices for cheap knockoff shoes and purses! Unbelievable! Since a lot of Care2'ers seem quite willing to confront each other in these discussion threads, I'd been wondering WHY I've seen almost NO criticism of these SPAMMERS in the threads! But now, here is this petition and I'm so glad to see that everyone else hates the spam too. An answer will be found, God wilin' and the creek don't rise.... THANK YOU MICHELLE. and PS to any actual trolls out there: Sorry, no offence.

Spam is now so pervasive on Care2 and has been going on for so long that I begin to wonder if Care2 is or was allowing it to happen, as a free means to gauge Care2 user tolerance of advertising within the comment thread. Currently, space ads in a form called tiles and banners appear at the upper right and bottom of most pages (usually Hood or Clorox lately, but there are others).
Accepting Google ads within the thread area would generate significant incremental advertising income for Care2. I'm not in a position to judge whether Care2 may need additional advertising income to offset the costs of operation and earn a fair and reasonable profit. I'm not making an accusation. I'm wondering aloud. It is my nature to look for POSSIBLE explanations of things I see that do not make sense to me. While it may be that Care2's system was overwhelmed by an increase in spammers or some new method spammers have devised, it does not make sense to me that a site of Care2's scale has not yet been able to bring the problem under control. I wish a Care2 exec would make a statement about the situation, to all users, perhaps in an email or post on the home page.

I really, really like the Care2 community. I really hope I can stay. Following is some information that could be of interest. Care2 is a certified B Corporation (The following quote cut and pasted from wikipedia): "B Corporation is a certification offered by B Lab of Pennsylvania, designating a business as socially responsible. In addition to providing an independent assessment of a business's level of social responsibility, the certification process requires a business to rewrite its articles of incorporation to make it clear to investors that the business's managers are required to also consider the interests of societal stakeholders: such as employees, communities, and the environment."
On the B Corp website, Care2 states: Product/Services: Online Community, Advertising It can be found by googling B Corp, then going to B Community, clicking on California, then finding it alphabetically. It seems as if it is getting fairly good "grades."

These spam comments don't look like Google Ads to me, Gregory. I think they're just plain old spam from cretins who create lots of new identities to post their stuff.

Randy Paynter posted a comment about the issue on the Feedback & Suggestions group site and I don't imagine he'll mind my copying and pasting it here:

"Care2 response
1 day ago | Hi All - Just wanted to pop in and let you know we're well aware of this spam issue and are taking it very seriously. It's annoying, it's pointless, and we will stop it.

In the past when we've experienced spam attacks like this, we block accounts and IP addresses and put up barriers, and eventually they go away. However, as we've grown (and we've been growing rapidly) and because of our strong reputation, we've becoming more of a target for spammers. So. they're spending even more energy to overcome our efforts to stop them.

We're currently taking a variety of additional measures, some of which may be obvious to you, some will not as they're happening in the background. The challenge is to quickly rid the site of spam without removing the good stuff.

We're also considering switching to a new commenting system hosted by a third party which is entirely devoted to operating commenting systems (yes, there are such services!). These services offer better spam prevention/management solutions as well as a variety of other features to make commenting an effective/enjoyable part of our community. It would look very much like our existing system, but with a few additional features and (we hope) a lot less spam. We'll be sharing more on this in the next few weeks.

Anyway, I just wanted thank you all for your patience and to let you know this is a big issue for us and we're working hard to get rid of the spam."

Thank you Lindsey, that's great to know. We all knew they must be working on it, we just wanted to add our voices to the mix so that they were aware how disrupting this spam is.

Thanks for sharing the acknowledgement you saw posted in the Care2 service group Lindsey.
[Not that it really matters, but I wasn't suggesting the current spam are Google ads -- they are as you say the work of spammers -- I was referring to the ability of websites (Care2 included, though it does not now carry them) to accept GoogleAdNetwork ads to increase ad revenue. They can be imported automatically in a templated area of virtually any website. It had occured to me that Care2 might be allowing these spam ads awhile, to help judge whether Care2 users might tolerate some Google ads in the thread area if they need more ad income at some point.] The posted explanation makes sense to me. I just noticed that SEN has had a rash of spammers trying to register for SEN's newsletter. Spammer robots are automated, the robot software would "think" that resistering might yield an account like a Care2 account allowing the follow-up robot to post spam in comment threads. This would jive with the explanation that the problem is the diffculty screening new account registrations entered by the spam robots as opposed to new real people.

OK, I see now, Gregory, what you meant.

I don't think I'd mind seeing ads in the thread areas as long as they aren't presented in comments and Care2's getting ad revenue from them (anything to help keep the site free - I'd hate to have to pay a monthly fee to belong to the forum, though I'd do it.) What really irritates me the most about the spammers is that they're trying to get away with obtaining free advertising for what are usually dubious and shoddy products and services. That and the ones that post their spam as news items (sometimes in the early morning there will be so many spam news items that the genuine stuff from members is pushed so far down that it won't be seen by as many people.)

I signed the petition, but I'm not sure what the solution is. I think it would be a deterent to new members if they were unable to post initially. Generally I skim past the ad posts to read the relevant posts. It would be nice if they come up with something, but I'm not sure how it should be handled.

Exactly my thoughts Gregory. I wrote to Care2 and asked if spammers were paying to be able to post adverts mid comment and I asked Care2 to let me know if this is the case so I can stop trying to report the violations, whose unresponsive nature is really getting on my nerves! Michelle very good article and petition! Thank you. As you see from the many comments, you have hit the nail on the head with this one!

Spam, Oh Spam, I hate you by damn. I know this is corney, but instead of being angry, which is how I feel EVERY time I see one of these ads, I try to just gnore them. But there are too many. I red flagged them a few times, but it doesn`t seem to work. I hope this petition sends them out of Care2 for good. Hugs to all of my friends.

Happily signed, thanks Michelle. It's good to know that Care2 is working on resolving this problem which must be a monumental task. Being technologically challenged, I do agree with Simone that making participation more complicated might create more problems than it solves, would limit membership. I think it's best to keep the very open format which encourages all the wonderful activity here.

Just so THEY know, They should really take some advertising or marketing classes because people won't buy from scammer spammers websites. It's almost like garbage on this site. I am sure there is a solution.....

I hate spammers too but, Nick H.,l how do you know the political affiliation (or anything else) of the spammers? I've seen a lot of the spam ads but I've never seen one that is signed as a Democrat or Republican. It seems pretty narrow minded to try to label someone with a particular political affiliation just because you don't like their ad. I've signed and noted this petition so does that mean I must be a Democrat or a Republican? Incidentally, I try to flag the spammers as inappropriate whenever I see their ads and it hasn't affected my political affiliation one bit. I will, from now on, try to flag the profiles instead of just their postings (thanks to all for the tip).

I'm afraid it's getting as bad on many sites. Those looking for free marketing sources can't figure out that those of us who are careful about those with whom we do business will only buy from established, well-known reliable sites. Most of the spammers "ads" are so amateurish, no one in his or her right mind would give them any business.

Signed and noted - but I don't know how much good it will do; you can ban the spammers, but they just come back with a different IP address and register a new profile. If it was easy to get rid of them, they wouldn't be everywhere.

Saturday September 4, 2010, 6:37 am
As far as no one buys from spammers? I don't know about that, because there are always a few careless cheapos anywhere you go, which in turn undermine the best efforts of the others. No pun intended!

Care2 has always eliminated Spammers, but they can only do so when the Advertisement and the Profile is Flagged. I have seen Care2 eliminate hundreds of Spammers and they are continuing to do so. I would like to see more people take the time to Flag the Spam and the Spammers. Meanwhile, as I have pointed out, Care2 is not only working on another Spam Filter, but Randy has told us that Care2 is thinking about switching to another Commenting System Hosted by a Third-party.This System has some excellent Spam Prevention Filters built in. Please understand also that there are presently 5 different Waves of Organized Spammers that are attacking the News Network, that is why I ask that more Members start Flagging Spam so that Eric can Delete the Advertisements and the Spammers.

I have hardly seen any in the past week. When I have seen some in my inbox and gone to flag it, it has already been removed. So things are now working pretty well. And I think we should thank them for getting it done. Thanks Eric!
