I am friends with Lt Col Barry Wingard's mother on Twitter. I cannot state strongly enough what heroes both she and her son are. Barry risks his very job every day by standing up for what is right against his very bosses. He has been fighting to free Fayiz for many years now, an Afghani who has been in Gitmo, interminably long, without charges being laid or evidence of any sort disclosed. Barry and his mother represent the best of socially conscious, commited citizens who would never sacrifice their values and dedication to justice to appease any power no matter how great. I honour and deeply respect both of them.

The truth shall set us free!

I read this on the Truthout site yesterday (and thanked Barry for an excellent article), but didn't have this link. This is just more of the same crap the American government is participating in. Let's just break all of the rules of disclosure, detain someone for 8 1/2 years without charges or trial and continually erode the US constitution through subversion in the name of the "War on Terror".

I think we must study very carefully just what the terms "state secret" and National Security have come to mean, and how quickly and easily we have given our consent for the government to behave out side the law. Of course we don't want these men brought to trial, many would be released with an apology, and rightfully free to lodge a law suit against the government for wrongful imprisonment. Each of us, no matter where we stand on this matter, have become complicit in the misdeeds of the government.
