Stepahnie, I agree that people are just so ignorant and not considerate of these wonderful Gorillas. They don't understand this can be very costly to them as well as the Gorillas at greater risk. Thanks for the e mail..noted

agree w/the above comments. tourists need to know and the word needs to be put out for the tourists who step into the gorillas' environment and the dangers that they pose. i do hope that awareness and compassion, is first and foremost in this situation. keep us posted...thanx for the 'heads up' Gorilly...

They need to do something about these rebels. The same ones who killed two last year are now making money illegaly by charging tourists to see them. What a bunch of scumbags! Noted with anger and disgust. Thanks Gorilly Girl.

Noted/thanks... :(

This is the most important part of the article I think...

"We urge tourists to think twice before visiting the Congo gorillas at the moment, as their dollars will be going straight into the pocket of the rebels. Remember that these are the very same rebels who killed and ate two silverbacks last year."

Thanks, Gorilly. This is frightening. As dangerous as it is, I would think it is progress for the rebels to have realized that they can get tourists to pay to see the gorillas and to consider them a resource rather than just food. I think the tourists need to be educated about the rules so that they can educate the rebels, because if the tourists just stopped going, the rebels would probably go back to killing.

Such beautiful gorillies and such ugly people!

This is horrifying news! I don't think there is any way to stop those rebels. Right now they figured out how to make alot of money off ignorant people, who knows what they'll think of next. How can those tourists not know what they'er doing??? Can they put 2 & 2 together to see that the people taking them are not authorized rangers? And without following the rules, the risks of passing disease to the gorillas by the people not wearing face masks is major. How angry this makes me. Thanks for the story Gorilly Girl.

Stupid people putting these Gorilly lives at stake even more so now, Why can they not get there head out of there butt long enough and relize what this is going to do to them. I caused them to be killed the last time it happen plus you know pouchers are in the crouds with them and learning where they are!!! This is sicking and makes me so stinken angry and yes even cry for then, for they do nothing to no one only want peace and this is what they get in return. I hope one of them get attact real good then maybe they will learn a lesson but, what bothers me on that is they will more than likley punish the Gorilly which is not right. GGGGRRR!!! Thanks Gorilli Girl.

Remember this story posted by Kemsa?

Over Five Million Dead in Congo? How Truth is Hidden, Even When it Seems to Be Told

"Walter Kansteiner, a National Security insider for the Clinton and G.W. Bush administrations and a "principal member" of the Scowcroft Group today, is a director of Moto Gold (operating in blood-drenched Ituri, Congo) and of the military-based "conservation" organization, the Africa Wildlife Foundation (Washington D.C.), that is backing mercenary activities in the Congo's Virungas Mountains region under the cover of gorilla protection."

This is most despicable!! How can people be so stupid?! Or is it just plain selfish and uncaring!! There should be warnings at travel agents, airports, any borders and even inside planes when people are flying to those areas! Why is there no help?! Why is it that there's no action from the UN?!

This is really very, very sick. Human greed, human selfishness, human cruelty and lack of care. Disgusting.

I'm so sorry about this Gorilly... Thanks for the info, sadly noted.

Do you know if there's anyone we can email or any action we can take?

Every time Nkunda starts heading in a right direction his ego gets involved and he potentially helps facilitate something like this. No logic, no reason just done because they can. Nationality of the "tourists" would be interesting. So would be knowing the logistics of travel, such as African base county of origin of the tour group. This is not an area you just trek off to very easily regardless of who escorts you. If they are coming through Kigali, then Rwanda should know and their minister take appropriate action against the tour group making the arrangements. There are only 3 at the most and only 1 maybe 2 that could transport that many people. If it's Kampala, Uganda its the same. Both of these countries actually have an effective government. They are very sensitive to eco-tourism issues. Pressure could be brought to them. As for the UN Marisa? It is in the Congo the rapes and violations of children are occurring in large numbers under the watchful eye of MONUC, its where the slave camps are. The UN? Not very likely.

When will ppl wake up to the fact that the UN only exists to protect the interests of Government's & that ppl, animals & the enviroment aren't even on the long list never mind the short list.
The fact that someone has realized they can make money out of Nature, in this case the Gorillas, without shooting them, cutting them up and selling the parts for souvenier's or alternative medicine, has to be a plus however questionable, Of course we all wish they could just be left in peace to live their fragile lives, but whilst Man lives & breathes that will sadly never happen.

"Gorillas are brave and loyal. They help each other. They rival elephants as parents and whales for gentleness. They play and have humour and they harm nothing. They are what we should be. I don't know if we'll ever get there"

Gorilly, I'll do whatever research I can do and if I come up with anything I'll forward it so fast my fingertips will burn. Don't these idiots know the personal danger they are in, esp being escorted by these rebels. What if they don't feel they are making enough money off gorilly's and think that kidnapping could be viable. What about attacks from gorilly's that are threatened by the close contact. Disease transmission. We already know there is brain death disease displayed by these tourists.

Michael W. is right while there are about 15 tour operators licensed in Rwanda there are only perhaps 3 tour agencies who could move this many people to the Congo border. IF they came through Rwanda. Remember thats 42 people on top of a stretched infa-structure in one week. Having spent time in Rwanda, I'm not sure they have the capacity beyond what is currently booked. It WOULD be interesting as to which country allowed them trans passage to the Congo. As for whom to contact Stephanie I can answer that:

ORTPN: in Kigali Office Rwandais Du Tourisme ET DES Parcs Nationaux but finding anybody there to take responsibility is hard. There is at least a "contact" by email site there.Even though they are listed as a government agency, they are a company and not "responsible" directly for Virunga. I have a suspicion this overlap is being allowed through here. IF it's in fact coming through Rwanda.
or you can go to the top:

Protais MITALI

Minister of Commerce, Industry,Investment Promotion,Tourism, and Cooperatives:(MINICOM)
Office of the
Rt.Hon.Bernard MAKUZA
Mr. Christophe BAZIVAMO

Any might work but Protais Mitali is responsible.
