Somebody got paid off. Short term dollars over long term common sense.

Alex is right. The courts should have ordered the palm oil company to stop the illegal fire sale. I'll be watching this case as it continues to develop.

Thanks, Julia -- there are important details in your account which I hadn't encountered to date. I think Alex's comment re payoffs is likely on the mark. As in the Amazon case, we have corporations flagrantly ignorning federal law. As the U.S. knows well. a federal system depends upon obedience to central authority in those areas in which it has legal power, or it's the start of the end, so something is deeply rotten. And federal governments ignoring their own laws is just as bad, just as perilous.

Judicial system is blind many times. Goes by letter not the spirit.

Consumers need to make the most impact. When healthier alternatives like coconut oil is available, palm oil can easily be substituted

Poor Orangutans don't have the money to buy Indonesian judges or to pay off Indonesian Government Ministers unlike the palm oil farmers who seem to have corrupt judges in one back pocket and gutless corrupt government ministers in the other pocket. I wonder how this can be stopped given the circumstances of wide spread Government corruption and apathy towards wildlife rife in Indonesia .... I will not be sending any sort of aid money to this uncaring country and certainly will not be buying any sort of their produce or goods. There will be nothing from Indonesia in my home I know that this will not break Indonesia in any way , my satisfaction comes from knowing none of my money is going towards the corruption of this country and the destruction of wildlife habitats there and I'll keep signing every petition I can find against the palm oil industry and every petition for the protection of Orangutangs and other wild life species in Indonesia.. Thankyou.....
