A great WORK IN PROGRESS:

Africa and Asia--a total of six continents--has released a statement ahead of a global weekend of action. The assembly, held online between hundreds of activists and then including thousands more via email, worked on the statement for several months and endorsed it by consensus on May 4.

They stress that the statement is a work in progress, and is being released to the public for further suggestion and input. It calls for, among other things, a global financial transaction tax, an end to bank bailouts and "too big to fail," food sovereignty, and universal healthcare and education.

In a press release, Alvaro Rodriguez, 31, of the Indignados movement in Spain, who participated in the process of writing the statement, said: "This is the beginning of a new global process of bringing the opinions of many people around the world together. It represents the beginnings of a form of global democracy in its infancy which is direct and participatory - of the people, by the people and for the people. While the statement does not represent the position of local and city assemblies, the next step is to present it to assemblies around the world for consideration, discussion and revisions, as part of a dialogue of the 'Global Spring' movements taking place across six continents."

You can join the discussion on the statement on Facebook and through its website.

The statement below does not speak, or claim to speak, on behalf of everyone in the global spring/Occupy/Take the Square movements. This is an attempt by some inside the movements to reconcile statements written and endorsed in the different assemblies around the world. The process of writing the statement was consensus based, open to all, and regularly announced on our international communications platforms, that are also open to all (e.g. the ‘squares’ mailing list, the weekly global roundtables and the ‘international’ facebook group). It was a long and difficult process, full of compromises. This statement is offered to peoples' assemblies around the world for discussions, revisions and endorsements.

There will be a process of a global dialogue, and this statement is part of it, a work-in-progress. We do not make demands from governments, corporations or parliament members, which some of us see as illegitimate, unaccountable or corrupt. We speak to the people of the world, both inside and outside our movements. We want another world, and such a world is possible:

1. The economy must be put to the service of people’s welfare, and to support and serve the environment, not private profit. We want a system where labour is appreciated by its social utility, not its financial or commercial profit. Therefore, we demand:

Free and universal access to health, education from primary school through higher education and housing for all human beings, through appropriate policies to get this. We reject outright the privatization of public services management, and the use of these essential services for private profit.

Full respect for children’s rights, including free child care for everyone.

Retirement pensions so we may have dignity at all ages. Mandatory universal sick leave and holiday pay.

Every human being should have access to an adequate income for their livelihood, so we ask for work or, alternatively, universal basic income guarantee.

Corporations should be held accountable for their actions. For example, corporate subsidies and tax cuts should be done away with if a company outsources jobs to decrease salaries, harms the environment or the rights of workers.

Apart from bread, we want roses. Everyone has the right to enjoy culture, participate in a creative and enriching leisure in service of the progress of humankind. Therefore, we demand the progressive reduction of working hours, without reducing income.

Food sovereignty through sustainable farming should be promoted as an instrument of food security for the benefit of all. This should include an indefinite moratorium on the production and marketing of GMOs and immediate reduction of agrochemical use.

We demand policies that function under the understanding that our changing patterns of life should either be organic/ecological or else not occur. These policies should be based on a simple rule: one should not spoil the balance of ecosystems for profit. Violations of this policy should be prosecuted around the world as an environmental crime, with severe sanctions for convicted.

Policies to promote the change from fossil fuels to renewable energy, through massive investment which should help to change the production model.

We demand the creation of international environmental standards, mandatory for countries, companies, corporations, and individuals. Ecocide (willful damage to the environment, ecosystems, biodiversity) should be internationally recognised as a crime of the greatest magnitude.

Well, dear citizens of Care 2, How do you feel about the birth of a NEW World and the death of the New World Order. (An idea whose time has come?)

We are the ones we've been waiting for. We, the planet's peoples are waking up, becoming aware of the manipulation of the powers which be & are seeing the truth; we have the power & numbers to over-come.

If we are going to have this kind of a world, and reach it by NON-VIOLENT means -- and since the Means do determine the Ends, there is NO other way than by Non-violent methods....
then we will have to act so as to get:
Lots and lots of soldiers on to our side, get them to lay down their weapons and REFUSE to fight rich peoples' wars; {See Buffy Ste.Marie's song, "Universal Soldier"};
Get the Police and Paramilitaries and the whole Security Apparatus to lay down their weapons and REFUSE to use them against The People;
Get as many as possible of the Rich People on our side! Rich people can get Enlightened just like some Aristocrats were before the French Revolution;
Be able to see past all National, Class, Religious boundaries, and Racism and Sexism;{and Speciesism!};
Get as many as possible of the Religious Leaders and adherents on our side!
Others, too, this is just off the top of my head. "The best way to get rid of an Enemy -- is to make him/her into a Friend!'
This will take long, hard work. Not a "fuzzy feel-good" thing!
The Buddhists say that all Evil is IGNORANCE -- and we HAVE to believe that people ARE educatable!
There will be a lot of SUFFERING on our side, before these Ideals are ever achieved. Before we DO get all these "enemies" to lay down their weapons; and stop F.E.A.R.ing each other and us!
A dose of Reality, I hope.
Articulating our Message well, is a big step towards achieving these things.

Also, we DON'T "compromise" just to add more people and groups -- NO!
Rather, as is in-process here, we CLEARLY ARTICULATE OUR IDEALS AND STANDARDS; and have them so well-presented that they ATTRACT people, on the basis of REASON as well as enlightened self-interest; and common-sense, and altruism, and concern for the Planet...... all those kinds of things.

These ideas and ideals, like those of the Enlightenment, should be, as in the Declaration of Independence {a document of the Enlightenment}, "Self-Evident". And so attract people on that basis.
So that people will LEAVE their religious, class, national, military, and other biases behind, and be, yes, "Enlightened" to the Way Things Should Work......

2012 is a year to watch closely and participate in all the wonders that are and will unfold. There is a new age dawning. From it's beginnings, in New York City, Wall street, I felt passionate about the Occupy Movement. It was begun with great passion. Those who had the gift of an inner spirit, that voice which speaks to all of US about truth and personal freedoms, became the answer, It began the movement, the beginning of "Change, We Can All Believe In"

This movement, though begun by youth, has been embraced by people from all walks of life, all ages, cultures and colors. A rainbow of colors, proudly color this much needed movement. We are all part of Occupy! I agree with Mutiny, It's how "We" occupy that will make the difference in future tomorrows. Many well placed words and ideas written here by the "Brave Hearts" of Care2.

"We" are the occupy movement that the world has been waiting for. No matter the challenges placed before US by those who would ignore US or put a damper on our resolve, "We" will, in time, CREATE the precious change "We" all desire. Excellent post Green. The people, citizens of the world, though the road be bumpy, are doing themselves proud.

That's certainly one of the most beautiful things I've ever read. Thanks for posting, it seems my stars are spent. I've supported the Global Revolution since I first heard of it, and although it became a bit splintered, seems to have brought the various groups together for a powerful message. I believe there are masses of people, worldwide, who want peace and a "prosperous" and healthy world for all for the future. Our planet depends on us to continue life without poverty, poisons, and greed. Now, we must spread the word....the spark's alive, and we must be the gentle wind.

I'm so glad the movement isn't losing steam! Quite the opposite is true: it's gone global! I'm not seeing or hearing much about this through the usual media outlets, so I appreciate the updates.

Thanks, Betsy!

You are so right, Susanne. The movement has gone global. I have a fantastic, soul stirring article about Spain this weekend, 500,000 protesters in Madrid and 150,000 in Barcelona. But I am not going to post an article on Mother's Day.

Quite interesting and inspiring... it starts which each of us, being aware and respectful, taking responsibility in a loving way and in this way increasing consciousness will lead to most of these points naturally. That it is still otherwise is the result of a misleading and fearful mind-set stuck in the past or future, always worrying or fighting, instead of being in the moment and seeing and living true nature...

As Lois said, a thing of beauty and inspiration also.
Just realize that this will not come about just because it is the right and moral thing.
It will not just "happen".

If every single person took ay least one neighborhood action if that is all you can do it would make an enormous difference..you could probably find one within blocks of your home if you are in the city or burbs.
Just cll or email your local occupy, or contact moveon.org or color of change. 1love thanks Bee

This is so exciting! Thanks, Bee, for another great post with such good news. Another green galaxy for you! (Couldn't send another greed star.) It is so important to this broken country called the USA and all the countries across the globe that are hurting because of misplaced values mostly. It is time for us to stand together and this looks like just what we need. The site for adding our own ideas for the new declaration of rights is: http://www.peoplesassemblies.org/2012/05/may-12th-globalmay-statement/
