US unions/labor made big national and international news in 2012. Was it triumphant or a bruising year? A mixed bag. A growing global compassion shown in Union actions is becoming more and more evident.

Noted, tweeted, shared, read, tweeted, shared. The middle class has got to realize unions created the middle class. Employers are only interested in their employees when it helps them. The employees need to take care of their own interests and that's what unions do. Unfortunately power corrupts, and that is what happened with the unions. There needs to be a balance of power for true success. Unions are aware of this now, and they are willing to compromise. The only way employers will compromise is if they must to make a profit.

Thanks for the post; people must learn that it is workers who have build this economy and that we need to join together to stop the exploitation.

I would say these above actions, as well as our victories in getting many companies to get off of ALEC, made us proud of what our unions and those that want them can do.

And i think Occupy deserves a shout out for their solidarity in many of these actions as well as well ;-)

I think it was a good year for Unions in that more people became aware of how much unions help Them, even if they don't belong to one. In "prevailing wage" states (like IL.) Union wages are what sets the bar for competing industries & professions, so the competition has to at least meet the wage scale if it wants to avoid Unionized workers. My Union dropped the ball for me personally this year - because the Gov. & IL. CONgre$$ pretty much refused to "negotiate" at all! Our contract was up in July & even though it was an election year, the negotiating team (which started work in January) didn't have a tentative agreement until after Thanksgiving!:( And it gave us Nothing more until This July which even then is a lousy 10cent raise!! :( But did anyone in CONgre$$ or the Governor lose any sleep or pay - hell NO!!!! AND they Still threaten to cut Jobs AND close our last line of defense (institutions & nursing homes that are State owned & Much safer, nicer, more trusted than Private prisons!;)..I'm pi$$ed & Quinn has to be ejected from the Democratic Party for this whole Terrorist tactic agenda - DINOs must go extinct!!!

Yes, Craig, I agree that Unions are very close to the only voice we have left.

Thank you, Nancy, Patrick, Robert, and Carrie for your comments. Thanks to all who noted this article.

Yes, Ellen, getting corporations out of ALEC is an Occupy Triumph. I know you and I have been on the street working on this in our different corners of the US.

Yvonne, I can hardly imagine what an exasperating year you have endured with your union. Major Disappointment. I am sorry you had to go through such a tribulation.

Noted, thanks Betsy...Yes I agree Unions are one of the last voices left, for the American Worker, which is why, the Corporations, and the Rich and the Government are trying so hard to bust them, and silence the voices of all our Union brothers and Sisters...Never give up, or surrender...

Unions ARE, have been and MUST be a permanent standing establishment and tool in every democracy, again, it is hard for me to see how far behind the US is regarding this(like with so many other items)
Yet it is good to see that some things could get accomplished, at least. Still much work to do. Thanks Betsy.

In spite of all the money poured into union busting and anti-union propaganda, in spite of the Koch Bros. and their pin-headed minions, unions are hanging in there, sometimes just by their fingernails. It is very hard to fight the power that goes with the money. Those opposed to unions have used a divide and conquer strategy that is very effective, and extremely hard to counteract. Gullible workers fall prey to the efforts of these corporate liars when they buy into the idea that the unions are too demanding, outdated, in cahoots with the mob, etc. etc.... In actuality, as others have said here, unions are our only hope. Workers are so beaten down that many of them lack the will to fight. When struggling to get by takes every shred of your energy, it's hard to stand up and fight. There's nothing like a bandwagon to get people to jump on, though. and I'm hoping that the example set by workers like the ones in this article will inspire some hope and action among more dispirited workers.

Seeing the sad state of unions in our country has been very hard for me. I grew up in a family of strong union members. My maternal grandfather was among the men who started one of the first unions in my home city. He was Business Agent for the Bakers' Union until he retired. I really hated to see the Hostess debacle. The fact that the unions are making progress is a ray of hope, and it's very exciting to me. Thanks, Betsy.

I yearn for the long lost days of when unions were the backbone of most workforces and in almost every profession. We need strong unions again or the Fascists are going to take us all done to third world level.

I sent Pogie a green star for you, Betsy... and for myself, of course. (There's still no rule about one star representing more than one sender yet!)

My favorite line from Pogie's suggested video is saying to the corporatists: Remember, when we get screwed we multiply! Let's keep that being true. As much as Unions Unite, we need the people to unite in bringing back values worth fighting for... and not just thinking that acquisition is anything of real value. Here's to the love of dignity and respect and not just the love of money.

I tried to send Yvonne a star, too. But 'twas too early. Thanks, Yvonne.

Thanks, Betsy.
