Yes it was in some ways, MmAway - but in the 1950s blacks had to drink from separate water fountains, girls had to take Home Ec, very few women were in science or government, heart attacks were nearly always fatal, LGBTQ people had to stay closeted et cetera. Still, I agree that we need to unglue ourselves from our smart phones as much as possible.

I thank everyone who has noted.

I thank everyone who has commented. I long for some aspects of the 1950's. Remembering the landmark movie 2001: A Space Odyssey... I am disturbed by AI writing some its own software....not good....

Wouldn't let me leave a comment! Censorship!!! LOL

Yes, in the 1950's I know I lived it and got the crap beat out of me when I was the little blonde child that didn't get what others dealt with. Had relatives that were TOTALLY RED NECKS and I once @ 7 years old said the "N" word. I learned an important lesson and was staying with the Pastor while I was waiting for my parents to pick me up (normal)...made me a sensitive person and ask why some people said filth to others! Probably why I ended up with so many stomach issues. It was an important lesson, but the 1950's were going in a better direction Freya than this is IMHO. Sorry, it's TOAST NOW for all

I understand Mm, I really enjoyed most of the 1950's. I liked the cheerful ...television sitcoms.....I did not decide to throw out my television forever until 1979 when I realized my family were not speaking to each other...so how could they bond, etc. So out the television went.

My children told me later that is why the two boys and college graduates and that is why my daughter is a doctor, who was mentioned by name in the award of the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize... and she was still a medical student... who designed an infant feeding program.....now used for the infants of refugees throughout the world.

But that is part of the background of why I look at things differently. What I see now when I visit with friends and look at their televisions is pathological identity politics.....on all sides...and avoidance of having any real issues.....but emotionally stirring on all sides.....violence cannot be far behind.

During the early sixties I encountered real racism....savage racism, murderous racism. The KKK did not like an instructor at my university... because she was seen....in what may have been a dating situation with a member of another race......no one stopped the klan from marching all over the campus beating their "death drum"....and later leaving her body in front of the Catholic Students Center.....since the klan hated Catholics too. She was dragged to death....the most painful and vicious form of lynching....her arms were missing and found along the road where she had been dragged.....nothing was done about that either.

Because this vicious murder happened while the Civil Rights Movement was just starting....this murder happened when all juries contained only white men.

Then as a tribute to JFK, LBJ managed to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Several laws enhancing the Civil Rights Act had been passed by 1998 when 3 white men dragged to death a black man named James Byrd. While being dragged, Byrd was decapitated. Of course, the klan showed up to support these three men....BUT the laws worked and two of the murderers were executed and the other imprisoned for life.

Nothing as vicious as real deadly racism ...for the sake of malice harming members of another race...is happening now. There is less racism...than ever. This is something I watch.....I remember all too well when the FBI and Cook County deputies murdered Black Panthe, Fred Hampton in front of his children....

When it comes to real racism ....it just does not happen now...so I wonder why some politicians want to promote a climate of fear and tension.

Back to Artificial Intelligence...do we really want non humans to write their own programs.....my two sons are software engineers....and they say...they could not imagine a worse future.
