The last time a Democrat sat in the White House, he faced a nonstop witch hunt by his political opponents. Prominent figures on the right accused Bill and Hillary Clinton of everything from drug smuggling to murder. And once Republicans took control of Congress, they subjected the Clinton administration to unrelenting harassment - at one point taking 140 hours of sworn testimony over accusations that the White House had misused its Christmas card list.

Now it's happening again - except that this time it's even worse. Let's turn the floor over to Rush Limbaugh: "Imam Hussein Obama," he recently declared, is "probably the best anti-American president we've ever had."

To get a sense of how much it matters when people like Mr. Limbaugh talk like this, bear in mind that he's an utterly mainstream figure within the Republican Party; bear in mind, too, that unless something changes the political dynamics, Republicans will soon control at least one house of Congress. This is going to be very, very ugly.

So where is this rage coming from? Why is it flourishing? What will it do to America?

What will it do to America? Probably continue to divide the split between our REAL values and self-serving "hate everyone in power while lying, using innuendo and fear tactics to discredit anyone who disagrees with us'' values.

Where is this rage coming from? Frustrated with losing political power, Republicans and conservatives are grasping at every straw they can find to return to "power."

The problem is....they have no solutions, no experience and no genuine wish to benefit the country. They're self-serving and, if they WERE in power, we'd see things crash and burn with the same problems as Bushie left behind.

Our President was immediately subjected to the worst nastiness in my experience....hidden agendas about his race were covered by innuendo about his religion, nationality, etc, because even the "tea baggers" can come out as the racists they are---not yet, anyway.

It's disgusting.

The raging RepubliCONs are scared to death that Everyone will discover they are Useless Relics of the Fake Cold War! The Russians NEVER came, they never set off ICBMs, they never even invited us to the block party when they tore down the wall (now That's cold!;) And we sat here with no Intel - didn't know the wall was down, and (fast forward to Bu$h the Le$$er Era) didn't know that the towers were gonna be hit (IF you Believe the same Liars who brought us "who could have foreseen..." and "Great Job Brownie")..
ALL they Ever had going for them was Greed, Rage, and Fear.. Greed is still working, but it's finally being frowned upon.. Fear is only working on those poor Teabaggers, and Rage is all that's left that nearly Everyone feels - but they Don't get that it's rage against the Inequities that They want to Increase!
So of course they will be witch-hunting - it's in their genes! These same backwards thinking criminally insane Politicians love a tried & true witch hunt! It never matters what the Truth Is, burn a witch & you'll prosper, or at least get rid of one more peasant who has offended you! The Dark Ages were SO hilariously Amusing to those in charge!

I had the misfortune to get caught listening to the radio and being forced to hear Rush Limbaugh refer to “Imam Hussein Obama.” Bigoted comment much? Despite all evidence to the contrary, Rush thought it was appropriate to call the President by a muslim leadership title? I guess it is OK to refer to the Fuhrer Limbaugh then.

A Republican controlled Washington: Government by the sociopaths, of the sociopaths, for the sociopaths.

The 2010 elections are more important than the 2008 elections. The Dems had better try and get their base and independents fired up and motivated. And we shouldn't wait for the Dems to do this...we should do it ourselves.

I wonder if the name callers in the right wing have actually glanced at the names on te voters register or in any American phone book. If one was a cynic which is presumably a prerequisite of right wing observation (and that's an oxymoron) one could be forgiven for finding a mass of un "American" names as the entire un-indigenous population is descended form invaders and immigrants of one kind or another! So what is the problem with the current incumbent of the white house! The Palin/Beck defiling of the Lincoln Monument by their offensive presence and hijacking of a white emancipator and a black civil rights leader is one piece of hypocritical exhibitionism that dishonours American history!

William, As usual you hit the nail smack on the head. The sociopaths include most of the really, really wealthy for whom the GOP and the ConservaDems truly perform.

I read a couple of articles recently about some CEOs who were blaming Obama for "uncertainty". I guess they prefer the "certainty" of economic collapse and depression for that is what we will get if the GOP grabs control of Congress. They have yet to propose a single rational idea for dealing with the economy now or in the future.

Kit, there must be something wrong with the Care2 duplicate link identification - I had posted this a few hours ahead of you. Although I strongly believe the more the merrier.

Michelle: Along with the massive number of SPAMMERS in the last week, I too have noticed that many things are going "just a little nuts" on Care2. I personally have to sign in about every two to five minutes, not one of my "flags" about spam has returned a message of any thing but that there was a problem with the message - try again later, and that doesn't begin to address the constant need to copy each comment before posting as so many seem to be lost and not posted. I'm hoping that if each of us will continue to "flag" the SPAM and write to Care2 support, we may just get their attention to repair what needs repairing. Even should that mean closing the site for a day to do what is needed.

I did not like Bush, nor his policies, but in public forums I did not demean him as that demeans the Office of the President. When Bush was in office this was repeated often by republicans; who have no problem with attempting to humiliate and disgrace the current office holder, because he is not of their choosing. In every election there will be a winner and a loser, democrats are used to losing and generally have at least some humor about the situation, republicans choose the low road of denigrating, defaming and insulting not only the man but the office. But of course most of the insults are directed at the man, President Obama.

Now we have those of virtually unlimited resources using their puppet to try to gain an even deeper foot hold of corporate ownership of this country. The Beckians claim a desire to "restore honor and god to this country." To be honest should one want truly want a restoration of the founding principles of America, then one would choose a well educated man/woman of real accomplishment, one who is fully committed (not in need of commitment) to the ideals of the founding of this country. Honor comes not from words but from honorable actions, and god was always meant to be a personal and private individual choice.

I find the title of this article appropriate, we are living in a time of "witch Hunts" with the same mentality of those who murdered thousands for not "fitting" into the way of thinking demanded by others. The Beckians seem hell bent to return us all to a time before the constitution when only a singular definition of god could allow for acceptance by others. This attitude of my way or the highway, is totally in contrast with the ideals of the founding of this nation. To allow for individual choices, freedom of and from religion, and most important - the messages we are bombarded with that reek of fascist over tones. The only way to denounce and thereby diminish this movement of extremists is for those who disagree that this attempt at tyranny is wrong and unacceptable; is for moderates to stand together, and let their voices be heard. Fundamentalist thinking and movements are successful only when moderates remain silent, and though shaking their heads in disgust; do not act on their beliefs. Our greatest weapons are our voices and our votes - use them.

Fuhrer Limbaugh and Fuhrer Beck talk to stupid and the very sad thing is that you can't fight stupid because you can't reason with them, and the fuhrers know this. In fact they are counting on it.

Kit, thank you, I saw Michelle's Witch Hunt post first and commented there, and am delighted that both posts are getting lots of notes and comments, and that both of you realize this was an inadvertent duplicate. Care2 is definitely suffering need of maintenance, the spam problem is now severe and the flag button still is not working.

As to the witch hunt, in answer to the questions you posed at the end of your intro comment: So where is this rage coming from? Why is it flourishing? What will it do to America?

I personally don't think this is the same old right wing stuff we've seen in the past. It is more orchestrated and coordinated and cunningly effective. First, corporate power has increased and done it's thing to shift the mainstream to the right in stages and spurts since JFK. The banking-greed fiasco that came at the end of the Bush nightmare period has cost 1 in 5 Americans 25% or more of their income, millions losing jobs, homes, savings etc. The top 20% now have 93% of the nation's wealth while the bottom 80% have only 7% and they are suffering and frightened. Government and politicians have failed them miserably. Rising numbers of immigrants of color frighten them and feed their resentment. The elite among the Repubs and right are smart and cunning and know how to manipulate that fear and anger to increase their wealth and power. To do this they had to do a lot more than "block" in Congress. They had to point the finger at government, at Obama, at terrorists, at Muslims, at illegal Mexican immigrants, at "the Godless", at "tax and spend" Dems.

Enter the Koch brothers, Rupert Murdoch, Fox News, Beck, Palin, Limbaugh. All of them pointing fingers at the things above, and NONE pointing a finger at the wealthy corporate elite. And here's another of the elite Repub operatives manipulating behind the scenes: Floyd Brown, the source of the birther campaign. You can see his work right here on Care 2 at
But look more deeply: The source of this bogus and time-wasting hate-Obama article and the "information" it conveys is not a "center for journalism" as misrepresented, nor even an independent conservative crusader, but a leading conservative Repub operative, Floyd Brown.
Brown is the same Repub operative who founded the "Citizens United" front org that won the Supreme Court ruling opening our political process and government to outright purchase by the wealthy corporate elite.

My point is that this is a highly coordinated and pervasive campaign of the corporate right. Now consider this: their international corporations inclusive of the banking and oil cartels and Walmarts etc etc, created and benefited from the global economy. They have been plundering our Treasury and the bottom 80% for decades. Tax cuts for the wealthy and the bank bail-out are just the most conspicuous examples. Moreover we have been and still are spending as much on Defense and Homeland Security as the rest of the entire world. Scores of billions in departments other than DOD.
There will be no economic recovery for the bottom 80%. We will have to fight tooth and nail just to protect our Social Security from their greed. Most of the new jobs created in the last 5 years are min wage in the service sector. If the unemployment rate improves it will only reflect an increase in min wage jobs.
Are you with me so far?
No Centrist Dem or Progressive Independent can return us to "the good old days". The question of the day is "Can we stop the conservative Repub right and manipulated Tea Party from making things hellishly worse?".

Kit, I believe that while we must fight the irrationality and manipulation, and we stand a chance to mitigate against its hellish trend, the forces driving it are very powerful. The outlook is for intensification of the manipulated madness and downward spiral of the bottom 80%. We will be lucky if we can avert violent civil unrest. My guess is that the right will get us into war with Iran or perhaps fundamentalist provinces in western Pakistan to keep the public pre-occuppied with an external enemy while the internal enemy secures the objectives of its agenda. Beck's latest ruse (with Palin's help) is intended solely to make them and the Tea Party appear less extreme while manipulating more Christians into the crusade aspect of the right-wing strategy. It would be foolish to underestimate the cunning intelligence and ambition of people like Murdoch, Rove, the Koch brothers, Brown, Gingrich, Cheney, Boehnert, and yes even Beck, Palin and Limbaugh.

Thanks Gregory for the information and perspective on this. I would like to add a link provided by Carole:

"My Faith My Voice" after watching this
short but poignant video my reaction was as follows.

That simply building a place of worship has brought so many to near hysteria, is nearly beyond my comprehension. The video must be brought to TV, let all see that religion is but one aspect of a human being. Please my fellow Americans do try and remember that above all we are country comprised of people and religions from all over this world. Perhaps we forget that is should not be allowed as a platform of hate and bigotry by some, rather a simple issue of the First Amendment.

As I said on Michelle's post , what you send out to the Universe comes back to you eventually. This hate-filled, extreme right ought to be afraid - very afraid. In the meantime, I keep trying to flag spam and I keep trying to send stars to people I've already sent them to - so, for all the sane, sensible, tolerant, wise, intelligent voices here - a shower of stars to you all. You keep me from completely losing it! :)

It is a witch hunt and if they are successful they will split the country and with riots and disruptions within America. This will give them the ability to require military intervention and America ceases to be. It will be the empire of corporations who will use you, your children and grandchildren.
