A deputy attorney general in Indiana on Saturday suggested on Twitter to "use live ammunition" against protesters in Madison, Wisconsin. In a back-and-forth with a writer for Mother Jones magazine, he followed up, "You're damned right I advocate deadly force."

There's one word for this: Unacceptable.

Sign our petition calling for the immediate resignation of Indiana Deputy Attorney General Jeff Cox.

The fact that a public official is comfortable calling for the shooting of peaceful protesters exercising their First Amendment rights is terrifying. Unfortunately, it's not surprising since the political Right has moved so far away from supporting democratic norms.

The right-wing movement -- from its politicians to its media outlets -- has taken sides against the working people of Wisconsin and is trying to paint peaceful protesters and unions as "thugs." In doing so, they are aligning themselves with some of American history's worst villains -- the politicians and robber barons of the late 1800's and early 1900s who would call in private security firms and militias to break union strikes and intimidate workers with outright violence, and sometimes mass murder.

We remember the violent actions and rhetoric of some of the Tea Party congressional candidates in 2010 -- Sharron Angle with her "Second Amendment remedies," Joe Miller with his private security guards who roughed up and illegally detained a reporter. Now we're faced with public officials who are falsely trying to portray public workers who are under attack and their supporters as violent ... and advocating real violence against them just for standing up for their basic rights!

Don't let it stand. Speak out now. Tell Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels and AG Greg Zoeller to immediately demand Deputy Attorney General Jeff Cox's resignation and address calls for violence within the AG's office.

Petition by People for the American Way - Please sign.

Yeah, like we really need another Kent State. What an ass! Just the sort of calm and rational person you want as a law enforcement official.

Damed straight I signed! It's people like him that have put this country in the shape it's in and if he wants to use live ammo, then he should be the one in front of the gun... not behind it. I truly hate the thought of American blood being spilled on American soil, but if things don't change, I think we're going to see it.

Some of us do remember scenes like the murder of young people on the campus of Kent State. Exhausted National Guard troops opened fire on unarmed students - for protesting. While some of us were shocked, horrified, stunned by the murder of children, others found ways in their twisted minds to justified the murders. One of the many ways hate speech can be turned to violence.

So this guy and other republican/T's don't like protesters? Well isn't that just too bad...for now it's still in the constitution - check out the first amendment. Again, I want to thank the republicans for bringing us all back together, see they are useful for something.

Say WHAT??? I thought M. Gaddafi was still in Tripolis, didn't know he went to Indiana now.. . Law enforcement Libyan style..-? I support Jason R.'s suggestion for if this sort of thing spreads you will have civil war before you know it. Your protests are already on a way to being nation wide, let's hope and pray you won't be experiencing situations like in Bahrain or Libya.
For all who don't know yet:

Dear Jason,

YOU DID IT!

Dept. Attorney General Jeff Cox is now Former Dept. Attorney General Jeff Cox and no longer is part of the Indiana AG's office. Thank you so much for taking action and lending real grassroots heft to our call for Cox's resignation.

While this result came so quickly that we never had the chance to deliver our petition to Indiana -- only several hours since our press release and petition were launched -- the overwhelming and immediate response of our activist was a focal point of our efforts to keep pressure on Indiana officials.

In a statement released Wednesday afternoon (2/23), the Attorney General's office said, "Civility and courtesy toward all members of the public are very important to the Indiana Attorney General's Office. We respect individuals' First Amendment right to express their personal views on private online forums, but as public servants we are held by the public to a higher standard, and we should strive for civility."

Thanks again, for you activism and for your ongoing support of PFAW.

I signed the petition before reading the comments. Toni, Jason, et al, have reported that the deed has been accomplished already. Amazing grace! We can't stop now. Being vigilant and supportive of each other as citizens is so important right now. I live in Maine, a state with the most ignorant Tea Party governor just elected. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if this governor wouldn't point live ammunition at any of us as we protest his already unconscionable intentions.

He has been fired, Kathy. And to think, this man was a Deputy Attorney General!!!!!! A law enforcement official who actually uttered a sentence like that in America, more than once, and re-affirmed it when questioned aobut it, which means he had time to think it over and decide he still actually felt that way strongly enough to say it to a reporter! OH-MY-GOD!!!!

Of course, now he can go get a job with Faux Noise and be treated like a hero and make a lot more money than he did at this job..................

Thanks Jason, I was just going to put on here.....that Indiana Deputy Attorney General Jeff Cox is gone bye bye, as he should be.

He was way out of line, it's totally unacceptable, who the hell does he think he is and do we want to live in the Countries so many are fighting to get out of or change? Then we have these Officials advocating to kill peaceful demonstrators.

This has been the dangerous Talk going on for far too long from the Right and it has got to stop. Even if you do not believe in someone else's view you don't shoot them because they do not agree with you.
