Did you know that when Americans fill up at the pump, they are really paying twice? That's because we not only pay for the gas we put in our cars, but our government also gives billions in subsidies to Big Oil companies.

Shill, Baby, Shill
Did you know that when Americans fill up at the pump, they are really paying twice? That's because we not only pay for the gas we put in our cars, but our government also gives billions in subsidies to Big Oil companies.

Big Oil doesn't need our help.

The oil industry just posted billions in profits in their first quarter reports, with Exxon reporting $10.7 billion in profit, Shell raking in $6.9 billion, Chevron posting $6.2 billion, Conoco Phillips announcing $3.03 billion and BP taking in $5.5 billion.

It's time to tell Congress to end the billions in taxpayer handouts to Big Oil.

I am all for ending all corporate and farm subsides. But the oil companies are not the only ones making huge revenues from gasoline. The federal government rakes in over $30 BILLION and the states take in approximately another $40 BILLION in gasoline and diesel fuel taxes. So we as consumers pay over $70 billion in taxes each year on fuel.

NOTED & SIGNED. We need GREEN fuel and we need to become primarily invested in MASS transit not private vehicles. This is especially true now that the population is aging so significantly. I am 63 and I no longer own a car. I can't afford one. However, I see that so few people are good/safe drivers, so many people are too busy texting and phoning to drive, and too many people are dealing with sleep disorders to be safe drivers. I am grateful to depend on public transit; also I moved to an apt bldg where I am 2 blocks away from the grocery store & drug store so I can shop on foot in all weather. If I can do this in Minnesota with our winters, my being elderly & disabled, most of the rest of you can learn to do a lot more without cars as well.

Discontinuing the subsidies for petrochemical production and putting them into Geothermal exploration and development makes some sense. Multi taxing us stinks. I've quit cars and ride a bicycle in protest against ridiculous gasoline price gouging!

It's a finite resource that most Countries are dependant on to keep their economies going (in our national interests as the US Government keeps tells the world) yet it is in the hands of corporations which are unaccountable to the American people and, it would appear, to your Government.
You could change all that by taking this resource, and the means of extraction, into public ownership.

In addition to the rip-off at the pump, we see the sneaky TV ads. The tall thin woman doing propaganda as 'Energy for tomorrow' and now a male with a slick ad for Exxon.

And they cry poor when there is even a hint of cutting their undeserved subsidies which they fully intend to pass on to consumers anyway.

I'm a Sierra member and and signed again, just in case I missed this one. It is such a non-issue that I lose my breath just thinking about how stupid and dishonest (dishonest, mostly) our Senators and Representatives are. I added a note pointing out the the public is not the only ones the oil companies are laughing at with their unspeakable profits, but they laugh at those whom they are buying off in Congress. I've asked those representatives to live up to their really very sacred duty and provide honest, morally viable representation for those who have trusted them to represent them. It may be speaking to the deaf, but self-respect must make a return or we are lost. Thanks, Kit.... when I say it's a non-issue, I mean that, Duh!, what's the question... of course we should not be subsidizing oil, I don't care how many threats they make.

I hope your computer was not the recipient of terrorist attack. It sounded pretty horrible. Did you get on someone's bad side?? Of course you did, but there no excuse for nasty play by subversives!! Did the NSA help you repair the problem?

Noted and signed... twice, as did Caitlin because I'm also a Sierrs member. Personally, I no longer drive... there's no way I can afford it, and in the process have practically become housebound.
Glad to see you back, Kit. I "angered" someone yesterday and they have threatened, but so far, so good, so keep your fingers crossed for me. If I lose my computer, I couldn't afford to get it repaired or replaced, and it would devastate me..
