This may not be the standard petition you are asked to sign. It is just a way of saying thank you to man who risked his life for the safety of others. No matter how one feels about war, these soldiers do risk all for a belief in us. The United States.

The text of the petition/thank you note:

I believe in this hurried world we take too little time to remember the sacrifices by those are sent to fight in the wars of the United States. I ask that for this man who has shown not only exceptional bravery but courage under fire that goes well beyond his duties, we all sign a letter of thanks to show our deep appreciation of his efforts and in doing so, hope that all of our soldiers currently away from home understand our deep caring for their welfare.
Son, father, husband, hero: Santa Fe native Leroy A. Petry's path to the Medal of Honor ~~~

When Sgt. 1st Class Leroy Petry reached for a grenade that day in May 2008 in Afghanistan, he made a split-second decision that saved two fellow Army Rangers.

He could have chosen otherwise.

He was already severely wounded. He couldn't have known how many seconds earlier the enemy combatant had pulled the pin on the Russian-made grenade, and how much time he had before it went off. He could have rolled to the left or right, away from the device. "He thought through all that and still made a decision to roll toward the grenade," said Sgt. 1st Class Jerod Staidle, Petry's platoon sergeant.
Petry grabbed the grenade with his right hand, and as he tossed it away from the other Rangers, it exploded. They were safe. Petry's hand was gone below the wrist.

But it was not this act alone that earned him the Medal of Honor he received Tuesday.

It was who he was before and what he did after that moment.

"He went above and beyond. He did not think about himself," said Staidle, who was at the battle where Petry's hand was blown off. "But I wasn't surprised by his action based on what I had seen the last few months."

Petry's family say he began trying to take care of others when he was still a boy.

His mom said she didn't have to ask him to help around the house. He just did it. "He would pull weeds for me outside and then want to come inside and cook," Tapia said.

She recalled a cold day when the family was helping Larry Petry, Leroy's dad, hang a sign. She had made sure her sons had their coats, but she had forgotten to wear one. Shivering, she was handing up tools to her husband. Little Leroy, no older than 8 or 9, tried to persuade her to take his coat. She kept refusing. Finally, he pulled his shirt up in the bitter cold and told her to at least warm her hands on his stomach. "His eyes kind of blinked when I finally did it, but, when I asked if it was cold, he said no," Tapia said, smiling at the memory. "He wasn't going to admit it was freezing. That's just the way he's always been."

From all grateful Americans, Leroy A Petry we send our deepest appreciation and a heartful thank you for your time in the service of our country.

PLEASE do sign and share with all of your friends on Care2 and other places. Thank you.

Well..., I was coerced into doing so by making the suggestion on Carrie B's post about Leroy A Petry. Still I hope we gain many signatures from both Care2 and Facebook to show our gratitude for this man and all of those who are so far from home and safety.

Yippiee! I was the very first signer. Hold up. Others are claiming the honor also. Premature joy.
I signed just now and will sign again if that's what it takes to give well-desrerved kudos to an American Hero!
Thanks for posting Kit!

Though Iím subjecting myself to the fate of Robert S. to be excommunicated from Care2, I would be remiss and not true to my spirit guides if I failed to post the following. Iíve been excommunicated before and Iím still standing, still preaching my warnings of world proliferation of fascism.

Wow, I find myself having a lot of difficulty indorsing this petition or for that matter any of those that aggrandize the warrior class. Particularly now with the imperialistic wars being waged, not for national defense, but rather for no other purpose then the expansion of corporate plunder and domination. Iím of the opinion that the use of the patriotic bluster and brain washing is doing more to indorse and proliferate hate, murder and plunder then any cause of national security. Absolutely to the contrary. If it were not for the warrior class, the waging of war and the subsequent devastation, misery, and pain wrought in their wake could not and would not be waged. Is this a catch 22, you bet it is, because the world is full of psychopathic hate and greed addiction crazy. No more so then here in the USA based corporate boardrooms with their ALEC agenda, from which a civil society must be protected or consumed. But when that same hate and crazy is being used to create a nation of 350 million perfectly willing to be killers and plunders by implementation of their tax paid for military, bent on ruling the world or at least controlling the populace of the world as slaves and dictating the application of all recourses for the insatiable profits of the few, I am forced to step back to reflect on what paradise could be if spirituality were practiced with sincerity .

The above said I am left with the respect for the man willing to jeopardize his own life in order to protect those under his command. This is obviously a special, though delusional, individual. If only he and the millions like him could direct their energies toward peace, equity and justice for all, what a wonderful world it could be with such a unification of force driving it onward.

It is exceedingly obvious that Petry is not the "delusional" one here.
