Your eyes do not deceive you. An unelected all-male village council in India has ordered that 23-year-old Meenakshi Kumari and her 15-year-old sister are raped.

Noted and signed, but the ugly truth is that I doubt a group of people who are dead-set on sadism that will have no repercussions for them will listen to it. Still, it is worth trying.

Noted, signed and shared, Christine. thank you for posting as news.
These councils decide in Africa which child is possessed by the devil or not - and needs to be 'purged'.
There is no excuse now - not when you see people even in the remotest villages everywhere carrying mobile phones - they are aware that what they do is wrong. It brings to mind that terrible Police float in some Central or South American country last year - that was mocking and jibing at a couple of women who had reported rape crimes. You couldn't make it up and men here will be as disgusted and dismayed as the women, over this.

Unbelievable!!!!! There is nothing more that can be said about such an attitude! What about the teachings of Siddharta Gautama? People are definitely sadists in their core not missing one opportunity in which they "are able" to make use of this horrendous human trait in a "justifiable" way... for them obviously!

It certainly isn't the fault of these young women that their brother eloped with a married woman! Insanity - as punishment for their brother's "crime".
One of the Indian women sentenced to be gang-raped speaks of her fear
One of the sisters sentenced to be gang-raped in India has spoken out about her terrifying ordeal.

Meenakshi Kumari, 23, and her 15-year-old sister fled her village after the elders decided they were to be gang-raped as punishment for their brother who ran away with a married woman.

She now lives in fear that someone will come for them and bring them back to the village to face the vile form of ‘justice’.

‘How will we ever return home or to our village? If we ever return they will harm us or rape us. If not today then in the future,’ she said.

She believes their escape will have ‘humiliated’ the un-elected elders, claiming that they will ‘not forget this humiliation. They want their revenge’.

The trouble started because the girls’ brother, 25-year-old Sumit Kumar, is of a lower caste than the woman he ran away with.

The family has appealed to India’s Supreme Court from their hiding place, begging to be saved from the horrific punishment.

Despite the constant fear, Meenakshi says she doesn’t blame her brother for his actions.

‘Loving someone is not wrong,’ she said.

===========================
I do hope that not only the Supreme Court intervenes but also that these two are given the protection and help that they need in order to start a new life far from their village ....

Because even if the Court intervenes, they won't be able to return safely ....

I came across this post & signed just a short time before getting Evelyn's alert! Thanks, Evelyn, for getting the word out on this outrageous sentence! Thanks, Christeen, for posting.

Once again, the poisonous caste system turns out to be the root cause of atrocities and injustices. Many of the horrendous rapes in India are perpetrated on young women and girls belonging to so-called 'lower' castes, which somehow justifies raping (and often subsequently murdering) them in the perpetrators' view. And justifies local law enforcement's failure to investigate and find those guilty of the brutal crimes... particularly when local police share the same caste affiliation as the perpetrators.

Sentencing sisters to such a punishment goes beyond anything I could ever have imagined! Beyond human decency... Thank goodness Amnesty is on the case. I've read "the petition has attracted more than 80,000 signatures." (http://metro.co.uk/2015/08/29/outrage-as-village-council-orders-gang-rape-of-woman-and-her-15-year-old-sister-5366803/#ixzz3kTysoIW9)

We can only hope that the petition and the family's appeal to the Supreme Court will reverse the situation & provide protection for these girls. With India's leaders supposedly now taking a hard line against rape, given the virtual rape epidemic that has mobilized thousands of concerned Indian citizens, how can they fail to act against a council of elders using rape as a legitimate punishment?

I think those elders should get some form of punishment! What about throwing them all into prison for a couple of months for inciting to commit a ghastly crime?

Abuse of power -
It can happen (in different ways) in any country, any culture ....

In this particular case, the problem is the power of the high caste family .... but elsewhere it would be the rich family, or the white family, or whatever the local structure endowing power may be .....

It's sad to see some condemning India & its culture as a whole for the rigid, intolerant and abusive behaviour of the powerful "elders" of this village. I do hope that the authorities will take necessary steps to condemn these irresponsible leaders ....

And I hope that some institution will take in the two sisters, provide them with the support necessary for them to make a clean and secure start somewhere far from their village.

Signed! In fact, it reappeared twice more and I signed each time.

That these sisters are being victimized for their brother's behaviour is unjust and cruel - and that their punishment consists of brutal sexual violence is an abomination. The ones who should be punished are the members of the non-elected all-male council - and an example should be made of them for concocting this vile and twisted "punishment".

Something without trying to disrespect any religious precept (?), because we can not accept, even in the Far East that such barbarism is just a secular law, shocks to the nth degree by the brutality of fact, the bestiality to punish anyone for the act committed by the other, and even more so by the proportion of the sentence in relation to the "crime." Caste apart, it was time India, which proposes developed nation - already possesses nuclear arsenal - enter the twentieth century with regard to their "millenarian habits". Shame on them.
