Gee, it could have been another Harriburg or Chernobyl! I don't trust nuclear fuel companies, the builders of these facilities, nuclear plants or repositories one bit. This is another environmental pollution source that is is killing us slowly but surely.

TV news seems to have just skipped this one altogether, athough the NY TIMES had a story on this in July that got by me too! I could tell endless horror stories of the Connecticut Yankee nuclear power plant (since shut down) that operated in the town of Haddam, CT, where I lived for 15 years - fortunately not near the plant at all,,,but these plants are killers of the ecosystem, the water, people and THE FUTURE - let's face it, we re stuck with nuclear waste dumps FOREVER.

Omigod, Cate! I live only 40 miles from Erwin, Tennessee! I know EXACTLY where this company is! I have not heard ONE WORD about this in the local news....nor do I expect to, really. Wow, sometimes these news postings REALLY hit a little too close to home....in more ways than one.

You wouldn't believe it , but our current government want to build 25 new nuclear powerplants here in Australia...DUH...even to the point where it has been reported that if they win this coming election, they are going to take this as a vote of confidence, to then build these planned nuclear power stations...heaven help us..

Florida Power & Light have 2 Nuclear Plant`s not far from me. They are located on the Ocean, on Hutchison Island. On the other side is the Indian River than the mainland.
One morning about 6:30 AM, I was sitting in front of a house under construction { I am a Carpenter}, I was the first one there. Sitting in the car, I could here this low rumble coming across the River & go right past me. I looked back, over my shoulder & saw steam coming up where the Nuc. Plants were. They did not release any information on that for 3 days & then said there was only a " little" radioactiveity released. That was all that was said & no body asked any ?. Money Talks!!!
Another time two buddies of mine, they were brothers worked out at Unit 1 & 2, they were both professonal divers. We had some great times together, diving, catching Lobster, partying & just having a good `ole time. They worked out at the Plants & theie jobs were diving in the inlet & outlet tubes to make sure they were clean, no obstructions & so forth. Well this one time they were working in an outlet drain. Radioactive material was released. It killed one brother & the other was burned real bad, he did not live much longer. There was no info. released to ony one. It was like it never happened. The proper people were paid off & that was that. Ofcourse their parents were paid. But not one word hit the papers. This was back in the early `80s. Not one word. Enough said!!! John

I have started a candle group for this and lit 3 candles as follows:

Posted for all those that suffer as a result of a nuclear plant weather they know it or not, weather info was released or not.

Especially for Tim R

Especially for the 2 brother friends of John B

Anyone that would like to add a candle of their own may do so by clicking the following link then just click on any candle not burning.

John, every time CT Yankee spit our emissions they used to report it in the Middletown Press and claim there was no damage. Eventually, they stopped reporting on these emissions at all...the horrors that occurred at that plant are legion in this area!

spit OUT emissions...as a matter of fact, the old doc who was the health director in Haddam when I lived there told me confidentially that there were WAAAAY too many cases of "inappropriate" cancer among the residents who lived along the river near and across from the plant...leukemia, lymphomas...in people, as he put it, who had no family history and were too young to be developing these cancers at such a rate. When Eben's 1st or 2nd grade class took a FIELD TRIP to the operating power plant, I kept him home from school that day.

spit out, that is...You know, the old doc who used to be the town's health director when I lived there told me that there were WAAAAAY too many cases of "unexpected" cancers among the people who lived alongside or across from the nuke plant...leukemia, lymphoma, etc. in people who he said had no family history, other explainable cause and were "too young" to be developing these cancers at such an unprecedented rate. When Eben's 2nd grade class took a FIELD TRIP over the river to the operating nuke plant I kept him home from school that day.

Meanwhile, NFS told its 700 employees this past week it will be "exploring the possibility of a sale" over the next 12 months - not because of the commission's disclosure, but because of the company's increasing value to a booming nuclear power industry.

"We are in a position of strength," company spokesman Tony Treadway said.

-- And this time the company spokesman was probably telling the truth.

not to be the bearer of bad news but they are going to start mining uranium just outside the capital of Canada in an area that is just surrounded by fresh water that is all connected to the St Lawrence river and the Great Lakes. I don't think it will be long before we have a disaster with this.

I'm sorry to say I believe you're right, Litha. That really IS just a matter of time. Mining uranium that close to the St.Lawrence and the Great Lakes! Of all the idiotic things to do!! Everyone's lost their minds.

I never have trusted nuclear plants and I don't want to see any more built but I think this will be the next thing they try to force down our throats.

I hope ALL 7 MILLION members of Care2 read this and ACT! Thank you, Cate.
I'm lighting a candle (thank you, Rabbit R.). Are there any active petitions regarding
erradicating nuclear power plants? I'll peruse!

I should be surprised but being downwind from Hanford and having had a former head of NRA as governor for four years, it isn't. Dixy Lee Ray was a shoot-from-the-hip-and-ask-questions-later prevaricater if there ever was one. I held the door open for her once when she visited my library. I should have stuck my foot out.

It was once thought nuclear energy was the answer to clean energy....it hasn't been in the news as much as everything else for a long time....we haven't paid attention.

We don't hear about all the oil spills so much anymore either......there is so much we don't hear about because Iraq is hiding all the other news. We need to make the media know we want to know.
