A Taste of New England I went off a-Googling to find a pic of baked beans, that quintessential New England dish, and laughed almost as hard s I did at the story with what came up - beans that were as red a Campbell's out of the can (ugh!), beans that looked traditional except they were totally charred, and on and on...LOL!

Disgusting?....yeeeeeeees but it tastes so goooooood, Cate LOL. And I ain't no Yankee! LMAO. No offence meant to any 'Yankees'. If you think that's disgusting, you don't even wanna know what traditional German foods I grew up with, let alone the 'Native' foods we ate..or the proverbial marriage of the two! Looked like dammit, smelled like roadkill but tasted absolutely wonderful!

Blood sausage, potato pancakes and sorghum syrup anyone?! LOL

To me, New England cooking has always meant seafood, which I can't eat because just the smell makes me ill. And boiling vegetables until they are unrecognizable is awful too, so please count me out. However, anytime you want to talk Italian, you'll have my attention...and drool...thanks, Ombretta.

OH YUCK, Terrie...and some German food too. Some of it is quite good...there was a charming Bavarian restaurant in the little downtown when I lived in the lake house years ago and I enjoyed much of the Hassenpfeffer for me though, or any of those gross-looking white sausages that looked exactly like large grubs.

Louise, it's really too bad you don't enjoy shellfish at least....oh, fried clams (NO BELLIES, thank you!), scallops, lobster bisque, 'clam chowda', fish & chips (the fish is usually some type of Atlantic whitefish, like cod or sole)...yummmmmmy.

This is hysterical. I come from a long line of "swamp yankees"! But I understand the chinese restaurant exemption for jews. The article forgot my favorite- Indiana pudding. My grandmother was a great cook but this article does sounds alot like my Moms cooking. The only thing she gets compliments on are her baked beans- which are B and M, of course. It is so bad that Dad finally learned how in his retirement years. His speciallty? He's from Maine- Clam Chowder- or should I write- Clam Chowdah!

BTW, the secret to New England Boiled Dinner is to put the cabbage in a separate pot. I learned that from a Rhode Islander.

And yes, there is plenty of excellent Italian food in southern New England.

You betcha, Nancy...I grew up eating and learning to cook Southern Italian - still do and still love it - and it's the best - go ahead, Louise, start drooling! Oh, the raptures of Indian Pudding! One of my all-time favorites and so easy to make too...tastes slightly like homemade baked pumpkin pie filling without the crust.

Oh and cannot save boiled dinner for me noway, nohow...hate cabbage to begin with...and don't liked boiled corned beef....gag...I can still see that huge pot simmering on the stove, full of grayish water, the gross corned beef, the cabbage wedges and the plain, unseasoned peeled potatoes...and the stench...ugh...LOL

Now that I think of it, why did my mother - who had NO Connecticut Yankee background at all - her parents came over from Sicily on the boat and through Ellis Island to Little Italy in NYC and finally to Connecticut - ever make the damned stuff in the first place?

Therein lies the problem Cate--unseasoned.

We always boiled the vegetables separate from the corned beef. With goodly amounts of salt, pepper and a few bay leaves and a sprig of Thyme. Guess that no longer qualifies it as New England Boiled Dinner LOL.

One of my favorite things is Maine Lobster! It's much better than the Rock Lobster or the Langostinos we get down here.

Those little white sausages you are referring to are Bratwurst. Real brats are fat and short. The best way to cook those are on an open pit til they split! Then serve them on toasted buns with Dusseldorf mustard and sauerkraut on top. The best ones I ever had were in St. Louis. What they call brats in the grocery stores now are NOT brats.

White grubs ROFLMAO. Yours were probably steamed in beer--I don't like them cooked that way either. I don't like Hassenpfeffer either! But Wienerschnitzel--oh yeah, babe! LOL.

Me give me Pasta I love all od it. my favorite is make it easy Olice Garden LOL!!!!! I'm a lod fashion cook. Mashed patatoes gravy home made biscitues from scratch Friend chicken for hubby fresh vegatables. Then spread out I'm going for it. Tonight its meatloaf and mashed patatoes he will have the meatloft I the other and Strawberry Ice cream by Breyer to top it off a half glass of red wine before bed, And this is the truth I take it for meds for my dr. told me too, bet you believe that one don't you? but its the truth. Its for my blood. Thanks Cate Hugs

Well, tonight I have a huge pot of pasta e fagioli - pastafazool to you white folks, LOL -on the stove...real Sicilian peasant food...cannellini beans in chicken broth with salt, pepper, freshly sauteed chopped garlic and ditalini pasta...yummmm...and we ae going to be chowing down in about 10 minutes.

My Mom made a boiled dinner with a ham bone and ham, potatoes, onions, and carrots. She added the cabbage at the end of the process so that it was heated and a little crunchy. She called this new England boiled dinner. We lived on the Washington St. coast. Where did this come from, I have no idea, but it was good.

I am a Yankee from CT and have had many a "boiled dinner" but grits anyone, they go good with eggs as long as you also have fried tators with! Thanks for the laugh Cate.

The only way you can get me to eat cabbage is [sauerkraut], brussel sprouts[fresh from garden,MINE] cabbage rolls [cabbage head frozen, thawed NOT BOILED] kale,very finely chopped into a stirfry with sweet peppers and tomatoes,with spanish onions and garlic. You get the idea.

I'm one of the lucky ones. My mom is a great cook! I'm the one that doesn't cook so well... lol. Hate to cook. When my parents moved 300 miles away to the town that they were born and raised in my husband almost cried. Usually one day a week we'd all(siblings, husband's, kids) go to mom and dad's for dinner and my husband always said that was the only day of the week he'd get a decent meal. When they moved, he thought he'd starve to death. lol... Nowadays he does most of the cooking (he's a good cook, much better than I am!)and I help... This article was so funny Cate. Thanks.
