Medical research is one thing - testing cosmetics is another. There are plenty of substitutes that are cheaper and more reliable!

Signed, commented, and noted. Thanks, Carole. I think there is no reason for testing on defenseless animals, it is nothing short of torture for them. They don't deserve to be treated is such horrendous ways. If they really have to test the products, let them test on themselves.

If the beauty of people is something that is coming from the beauty of mind and heart, then I hope that not even one of the persons in charge will ever look beautiful but always struggling with the image they see in the mirror ... as long as they don´t stop. Caudali for example has wonderful products and they do not animal testing.

Gladly signed. Animal abuse/testing is abhorrent anyhow, but to justify it for makeup?! Disgusting. I wonder how many animals are tortured and how many makeup containers make it to landfills all over the world every day... animals who suffer needlessly and containers that won't biodegrade. All so people can look "nice" for other people. There is nothing beautiful about it.

I am SO PLEASED with the response/hearts of Care2 members. Thanks, for the splendid Labor Day gift! (She says as she's busy making macaroni salad and other treats for the holiday. *smile*)

Most of all, thank you, Melissah, for bringing this to my attention.

Speciesism MUST change. Each of us can, in some way, attempt to redeem the reputation of humans for their grotesque use/abuse of animals, with whose care they are entrusted. In order for us to be considered a "higher species," we must demonstrate that we have the compassion, sense of responsibility and intelligence to justify claiming that station in the hierarchy of this divine order.

Torture of animals for vanity's sake is too low to condone.

Goodness, Procter & Gamble and animal testing are inextricably linked. We all know they are a global giant, with enough money and power to buy their way out of or into anything.

We in the UK have the misfortune of having them being tied into the Olympics Lodon 2012, as they quietly crept in and snaffled a sponsorship deal. They already sponsor US athletes?

The ONLY way to stop them is in the pocket - it's the only thing they understand? Sadly, any petition will end up on the pile with all the many others.

Just have a look at the P&G list of products : Always, Tampax, Pampers nappies, Duracell batteries, Fairy Liquid, Eukanuba/IAMS pet foods ( for which they did some pretty nasty stuff on animals?! ), Oral B, Colgate ( I did write to the Care site about this when I saw a Colgate ad on here, but never got a response here - hmm! ), Pringles, Lenor, Dreft, Ariel, Bold, Olay, Max Factor, GUCCI, Hugo Boss, Lacoste, Rochas, MUM deodorant, BRAUN, Gillette, and the cruelly famous HERBAL ESSENCES.

I would recommend you have a look at a UK organisations' website - Uncaged Campaigns. There you will find details about P&G and the fight against them. They don't care. Money and power is their god. BOYCOTT. It's the only thing they understand. Hit them in the pocket. There are plenty of alternatives.

Wish you well. Good luck with this.

Noted & signed, naturally!

Here in the UK, Marks & Spencer now sell their own, very cheap and basic, range of grooming products, none of which have been tested on animals.

Look for "the leaping bunny" logo/symbol on the packaging! This means that the BUAV (British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection) has passed the product as cruelty free.

I would NEVER BUY ANYTHING THAT IS TESTED ON ANIMALS, and I hope other people will think twice about what the poor animals go through. Life in a cage, having alll sorts of things happening, burning the skin, swallowing different substances just to see what happens to throat or stomach, the pain they have to endure is terrible, STOP the testing!!!!!!!!

When I was 12 years old, I learned about animal testing and steel jaw traps. I wrote letters to companies and politicians, and asked my mother to boycott companies such as P&G. In my youthful naivety, I thought that once I brought attention to the agony inflicted upon animals, laws would immediately be passed to stop the suffering, or the companies would say OMG! We have to stop torturing animals! 35 years later, not much has changed. I continue to sign petitions, write letters, and boycott companies. I have been a vegetarian for over 25 years. Sometimes I think I should just go to KFC and McDonald's and buy Tide. Throw in the towel, as I am not making a difference in the suffering of innocent sentient beings, but I just can't do to others anything that I would not have done to me.

It is completely absurd to me that companies such as this refute opposition, claiming that animal testing is necessary. It's necessary to test a product that is intended for humans on a completely unrelated subject? It's necessary to abuse an innocent, sentient being in the name of subjective beauty? In a market that has so many companies who refuse to test on animals, clearly animal testing has absolutely no validity. Companies that continue this cruel practice are begging to be ridiculed and boycotted.

Thomas N. (0)
Monday September 6, 2010, 8:44 pm
The same company that makes women feel uncomfortable about their natural beauty, also is hurting animals with their make up, I want females to trust in their own beauty and realize that a lot of the things we are being marketed aren't good for us or even researched to see if they are potentially hazardous to our health

Chavonne H (46)

Gladly signed and noted, thanks Carole. It helps to check the products listed on sites like to know which brands are cruelty-free and which still test. Companies like P&G obviously care only about profits and abusing animals is all part of their greedy process. The only way that they will stop is if enough consumers boycott them.

Signed this petition - well done Melissah and JustC for highlighting this horrifice and absolutely unnecessary practice!

It is absolutely the responsibility of the consumer to be aware of, and refuse to purchase or use products that have been tested on animals. It would also behoove big businesses to do the same. It would send a strong message to such companies that engage in this practice, as well as to the public about who cares for ethical business and who does not. They certainly aren't going to sink by boycotting Cover Girl, or other like-minded companies, and will easily regenerate revenue once these companies end animal testing and are welcomed back into the mainstream market.

My comment: There are many brands of cosmetics that are of as good, if not better, than Proctor & Gamble products, and at an equivalent price. Personally, I prefer these products knowing that no animal suffers and have persuaded friends, family and colleagues to do so as well. If other companies can make ethical products, why can't you?

On the "Uncaged" web site I found this info:

Beauty Without Cruelty Kingfisher
Bio-D Meadowsweet
Daniel Field Neal’s Yard Remedies
Dr Hausheka Urban Decay
Faith In Nature Urtekram
Green People Weleda
Honesty Cosmetics Yaoh

The following companies either openly use animal-tested chemicals, or fail to demonstrate that the finished product and the ingredients they use have not been tested on animals since a fixed cut-off date.

Avon Cosmetics Jeyes
Beiersdorf Johnson & Johnson
The Body Shop/L’Oreal+ Lancome
Chanel Lever Fabergé
Christian Dior L’Oreal/Nestlé
Clinique Miners Cosmetics
Colgate Palmolive PZ Cussons
Coty Reckitt Benckiser
Ecover* Revlon
Estée Lauder SC Johnson
FCUK Virgin Vie
Garnier Yardley
Givenchy Yves Saint Laurent
GlaxoSmithKline Unilever
Helena Rubenstein

All of the above are to be boycotted in addition to Procter & Gamble!

I am absolutely amazed by this story because a company that big has the money to invest in other testing besides testing on animals. It comes as a huge shock to me that such a large company would let something like this be revealed and I am glad they were exposed for the cruelty they put on animals all the time and for what? Makeup, that is just ridiculous. I really appreciate you posting this article because now I am going to start my own activist petition targeting them. Action taken and thanks for posting.

I already stopped using Cover Girl, Pantene and other brands of cosmetics and other stuff as soon as I checked and saw the parent company is Procter & Gamble. I will boycott all companies who test their products on animals - - you have my word on that! Since I am STILL having problems with Care2 and the fact that the system is still NOT processing any new petitions I try and sign, I cannot sign this or any other petition until the techs at Care2 decide to check on the problem. Signed. What I don't understand is, there must be a million already tested substances that they can use. Why do they keep needing MORE? Surely they can just keep on changing the packaging so any women dumb enough to have to have NEW things all the time, could be fooled into thinking they are getting something new and different?!

The "Uncaged" software caused the list of cruelty free companies to come out in a messy fashion when I cut-and-pasted. Here is a revised list - I hope it will be clearer this time!

These company’s products can most easily be found in whole-food and ‘alternative’ shops, but increasingly in some supermarkets:

Beauty Without Cruelty; Kingfisher; Bio-D; Meadowsweet; Daniel Field; Neal’s Yard; Dr Hausheka; Urban Decay; Faith In Nature; Urtekram; Green People; Weleda; Honesty Cosmetics; Yaoh

Anna Borsey (66)
Wednesday September 8, 2010, 5:54 am
And here is a revised list of companies to BOYCOTT, again from the "Uncaged" web site:

Avon Cosmetics; Jeyes; Beiersdorf; Johnson & Johnson; The Body Shop/L’Oreal+; Lancome; Chanel; Coty; Lever; Fabergé ;Givenchy; Helena Rubenstein; Christian Dior; L’Oreal/Nestlé; Clinique; Miners Cosmetics; Colgate; Palmolive ; PZ Cussons; Reckitt Benckiser; Ecover*; Revlon; Estée Lauder; SC Johnson; FCUK ; Virgin Vie; Garnier; Yardley; Yves Saint Laurent; GlaxoSmithKline; Unilever

+ The Body Shop are now owned by L’Oreal/Nestlé. PLEASE NOTE!!!
* Ecover do not have a FCOD, they follow the ‘5 year rolling rule’, which is why they feature on the ‘bad’ list.

Hopefully this list is easier to read. I can really recommend the "Uncaged" web site! It has a great deal of info about Procter & Gamble, animal testing and associated issues.

Anna Borsey (66)

Nicky Melville - " What I don't understand is, there must be a million already tested substances that they can use. Why do they keep needing MORE?"

Yes. I too have wondered about this. I imagine the reason is that they are forever coming up with NEW fragrances, NEW colourings, NEW preservatives, NEW substances for doing this and that (e.g., gelling, anti-caking) and by law (at least, here in Britain) ALL NEW SUBSTANCES AND FINISHED PRODUCTS MUST BE TESTED ON ANIMALS, in order to ascertain that THEY ARE SAFE FOR HUMANS!

I shall repeat that, in case anyone missed this peculiar twist of logic:

In Britain, by law, all new substances and finished products (also drugs etc) MUST be TESTED on ANIMALS in order to ascertain that they are SAFE for HUMANS to use, smear on the body, ingest, etc.

Anna Borsey (66)
Wednesday September 8, 2010, 6:05 am
I have just re-read my last sentence, and I realize that this does NOT make sense.

If this is what British Law states, how come there are cruelty free products freely and openly sold here?

Carole Sarcinello (338)
Wednesday September 8, 2010, 6:12 am

Good info, Anna. I'm very disappointed to hear that The Body Shop has transferred ownership. They were one of the pioneers to feature natural ingredients, reusable containers and providing job opportunities to individuals in third-world countries, by using their natural resources to market products.

Also sorry to learn about British law. As a side note, I visited the P&G site and they have a section regarding animal testing. It's mainly a whole lot of words . . . saying NOTHING! (Some riggamarole about doing their best to phase out animal testing completely and only using it when absolutely necessary.)

Jara Van Damme (2)
Wednesday September 8, 2010, 7:13 am
I would never be able to do such a thing as testing anything on animals.. Not even for all the money in the world! I don't understand how people can be so cruel and cold.. And I'm not even talking about the people who know this but still buy and use that stuff!

Carole Sarcinello (338)
Wednesday September 8, 2010, 9:36 am

[Rough translation of Adriana's comment]

"Today September 8 is a day of great mourning. 'Europe has approved new rules on vivisection.
It's a disgrace to Europe, one step back on anything civilized. I have led petitions and protest letters.

YES 'to experiments on stray dogs and cats.
YES 'to experiments without anesthesia.
YES 'to the physical evidence of effort to the end (eg swimming)
YES 'to re-use of these animals already tortured for an experiment to torture again.

I have no words but only tears."

I don't use makep, and certainly not their TRASH. I use Yves Rocher nail polish, lipstick and fragrances, a French company that NEVER tested on animals and Ms Rocher was famous for telling other companies, "If you have to test your 'product' on animals, you obviously don't know what you're doing."

I stopped using Proctor and Gamble products years ago. There are many alternative products today that endorse cruelty free, and that is where my money goes. Proctor and Gamble don't give a damn about the pain inflicted on animals - it is the very large £ sign they look at.

Eva Ries (237)
Thursday September 9, 2010, 11:07 am

Wendy - exactly. And Puke&Goblins think they can torture animals and then bask in the limelight by pulling stunts like sending their PETROLEUM-based dishwashing slop, "Dawn," down to the Gulf to clean oiled animals. What about the thousands of captive animals they TORTURED when they were testing their chemical soup? I guess THEY don't count. Their sneaky, calculated little publicity stunt didn't go unnoticed. Just because they were able to bamboozle a few scientists - who genuinely ought to know better, and NPR, too - they didn't fool us all.

i belong to NAVS, and they and we supporters have toiled for years to get this cut off date, only too find that they are STILL AT IT.
i told covergirl in no uncertain terms what i think of these disgusting practices, and that we are voting with our feet, myself, family and friends, as many as i can find, to petition them and also not purchase a single thing from them again, or untill they can prove they no longer use animal testing.
I am full of tears that humans can do such things all for the sake of a bit of slap to pretty themselves up.
