WTF is going on with those of spare resources even considering voting against their own needs?

What happened? Unregulated stock market, unregulated business, both borrowed and stole their way to riches, and the country paid, and paid. Starvation and grief, let's not go back to that. Obama has us moving again, it will not happen over night. This was very much like 1929, not a thing improved till FDR was elected, and Obama works for us every day. He faces an obstructionist, immovable Congress but, still he tries.

We can go back to that or we can move forward. I will not be swayed by the endless talk and lies - Oh my, the lies - I can not remember a candidate that looked straight at the camera and lied, like Romney does daily.

Thank you for sharing this sad, but very good reminder of what could be, all over again.

Better sign up for your Red Cross package now, should Nov 6 turn out a catastrophe... (that's to cheer up what is in truth so sad!). Now after Sandy those states most definitely won't have the needed resources either. 15 impressive minutes, what a strong message and reminder. Thanks Carole.

I have a REAL problem with those, who would denigrate people in need of assistance. After all, many American citizens are likewise afflicted.

How much power did THEY have in the decisions made in a "bought" Congress that rendered votes that, ultimately, decided their future?

It's past time for a re-think!

I cannot understand how someone can even consider voting for romney and yet according to the polls they are neck in neck but as I've posted elsewhere for a fairly good barometer as to what type of leader romney really is go to those that know him best. Check out the polls in Massachusetts the smallest lead I have seen for Obama is 17 points and the largest 32. Apparently the people of Massachusetts have a different memory of romney's governing skills than he does. Thanks Carole

There are too many "low information voters" (as Bill Maher calls them) who believe the lies and propaganda they hear from the media and from low-down, lying politicians. They have no clue how easy it is to become homeless or sick, they think it could never happen to them. But as the people in NY and NJ are finding out, tragedy plays no favorites. I want someone in charge who has some compassion, who has been to the dark side and knows what it's like, someone who will care - that's most assuredly NOT Romney/Ryan.....

The election is so close. Please do all you can to enable people to vote. This election will have effects for decades because it is the final effort, which has been prepared for decades, by the super rich corporations to grab total power and to end all effective democracy for good. If they win this time, they will never allow it to be taken back by the people.
Dickensian England, Tzarist Russia, the Soviet Union will all seem like dreams compared to the dystopia that the likes of the Koch brothers can serve up to people.
They will encourage people of their kind to try the same tactics all over the world.

Thanks, Roxy.

As I watched this documentary, I couldn't help but notice how the Republican attitudes during the Hoover administration were much the same as present-day . . . even including their trickle-down theories and their conviction that offering help to those who needed it most would make those recipients weaker and lazy.

That was over 80 years ago; and FDR, the president who suceeded Hoover by a landslide, created the New Deal, with the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), which helped to create jobs for the many unemployed while helping to rebuild the country's infrastructure.

We can NOT return to the prevailing attitudes of the early 1930's! It has already been proven to be disastrous!

Ya know, when I see these politicians trying to erase all hard-fought-for human rights progress, it reminds me of many of the people in the South, who -- 147 years later -- STILL can not accept that they lost the Civil War!

I trust Americans will choose the right guy and reelect Obama. They will regret it if they vote for Romney. I hope I am right.

This article appears in the British magazine" The Economist " It talks about Obama the " man who once personified hope and centrism set a new low by unleashing attacks on Mitt Romney even before the first Republican primary. Yet elections are about choosing somebody to run a country. And this choice turns on two questions: how good a president has Mr Obama been, especially on the main issues of the economy and foreign policy? And can America really trust the ever-changing Mitt Romney to do a better job? On that basis, the Democrat narrowly deserves to be re-elected. Read more:

All of Romney's harvesting of once-healthy thriving companies and throwing them into bankruptcy. How is having Americans picking up the tab for those bankrupt companies lowering the deficit? Just more Romney Bullpuckey and socializing debt, privatizing profits. I guess they think Socialism is OK when it works in their favor.

Mitt Romney, is the lowest form of life, walking the face of the Earth...If this Snake Oil Salesman somehow wins, steals, this Election, it would be a dagger to the heart for 99% of the people in this Country...

Thank you for the history lesson Carole. As they say, those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. There was a reason our ancestors put in place things like the Glass Steagal Act, the rich don't forget, they share this among themselves and wait for the majority of people to forget as the years slip by.

The Grandsons of the past robber barons recall very well how it is done, and so they did it again. Now don't place another Hoover into Office or the same scenario will play out as in the past. Is bad enough the media does little to cover in earnest the people in major struggle to feed and shelter themselves right now, a Romney will only dig this in deeper and all more to the already suffering.

By working to get rid of most of the present Congress and vote in Dems or 3rd-party candidates who understand how treacherous this political cut-throat system is, we can take the reins to save this country. It's all up to us to stay on top of what's going on... and to learn the history we need to learn in order not to repeat it. That really is a problem. So many of the Tea Party types don't seem to understand that what is happening here is pretty much what killed those great societies that flourished for a while and then vanished. How many in the world speak Latin these days as the Romans used to do? It makes me sick when my conservative friend says "Don't worry, this country can't fail." How naive!

Thanks, Carole... Wishing you all good things!

I don't even know WHY I looked up this topic at PBS. (I was considering the correlations between the Dust Bowl and the Depression (PBS: Surviving the Dust Bowl), Hurricane Sandy, and what is happening now, and vaguely remembered previously watching their documentaries.)

Once I re-did, it really STRUCK ME about the repeated verbiage and prevalent demeanors -- so similar to the same ones that afflicted this country in the early 1930's.

Yes, we must revisit documented history, and learn from the mistakes made before.

Thank you for your blessing, Caitlin . . . the feeling is warmly returned.

Carole, you have surely given us a grim look at the future thru the nightmare of the past. We will all have to collectively pray that we are not led into a future that is not for the people. I send green stars to all here who have the wisdom and knowledge to know that a compassionate people is the only hope we have of building a country that works for the 99%. The 1% can go buy an island and live together as an elitist and greedy colony. If only that could happen, it would be interesting to see how long it would take for them to turn on each other.

Honestly, I find it amazing that this election could be so close! People must have amnesia and be wearing blinders (Especially in Massachusetts) to consider Romney and his strange side kick for VP!!! The mistakes made leading up to the major mess we found ourselves sinking in, simply cannot be repeated again!!! I find Romney to be insincere, only for the wealthy, ready to change social security, medicare, women's rights, not caring a stitch about the environment and a host of other problems. SCARRY !!!!~~Thanks again, Sheryl~~~

Thanks, now I can really be both severely despondent and frightfully enraged at the same time. We CANNOT let this nightmare happen again. We cannot let history repeat itself because we, the people, have been so propagandized, lied to and DISTRACTED. We cannot.

Any woman, or any man for that matter, that votes for these two FASCISTS and against their own best interests and that of their fellow citizens, need to be (insert fantasy here). They need to be de-programmed and wake the **** up as what will really be happening to them and their offspring if the Fascist Regime is allowed to take over (steal, coup, bu off the Supremes, take your pick) this government.

Like I said before, this time....I do not think it will be bloodless. AMERICA 2.0

Well Carole --- We did it. The phone calls, the letters, the mails and working to get people all paid off. The effects of this massive recession will not go way in the next 4 or 14 years. We must slowly heal, we must build a new economy, invest in alternative energy and look toward the we have a some breathing space to do that.
